Ye Olde Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/17/2008 10:40:41

Good Morning!

By now you must know where I'm headed if the blog is posted at this hour on a Saturday.
The separation of individual blood components is done with a specialized centrifuge (see apheresis). The earliest manual forms of plateletpheresis are done by the separation of platelets from multiple bags of whole blood collected from donors or blood sellers. Since each blood bag (usually 250 ml or 500 ml) contains a relatively small number of platelets, it can take as many as a dozen blood bags (usually from 5 to 10 bags, depending on the size of the blood bags and each donor's platelet count) to accumulate a single unit of platelets (enough for one patient). This greatly increases the risks of the transfusion. Each unit of platelets separated from donated whole blood is called a "platelet concentrate".

Modern automatic plateletpheresis allows the blood donor to give a portion of his platelets, while keeping his or her red blood cells and at least a portion of blood plasma. Therefore, no more than three units of platelets are generally harvested in any one sitting from a donor. Most donors will donate a "single" or "double" unit, however the occurrence of "triples" has been increasing as more suitable donors are recruited.

Because platelets have a life-span of just 5 days, more platelet donors are always needed. Some centers are experimenting with 7 day platelets, but this requires additional testing and the lack of any preservative solutions means that the product is far more effective when fresh.

Even though red blood cells can also be collected in the process, most blood donation organizations do not do so because it takes much longer for the human body to replenish their loss. If the donor donates both red blood cells and platelets, it takes months, rather than days or weeks, before they are allowed to donate again (the guidelines regarding blood donation intervals are country-specific).

In most cases, blood plasma is returned to the donor as well. However, in locations that have plasma processing facilities, a part of the donor's plasma can also be collected in a separate blood bag (see plasmapheresis).

Symbiosis
Author: BobR    Date: 05/16/2008 12:14:23

sym·bi·o·sis [sim-bee-oh-sis, -bahy-] –noun,
1. Biology. a. the living together of two dissimilar organisms, as in mutualism, commensalism, amensalism, or parasitism.
2. Psychiatry. a relationship between two people in which each person is dependent upon and receives reinforcement, whether beneficial or detrimental, from the other.
3. Psychoanalysis. the relationship between an infant and its mother in which the infant is dependent on the mother both physically and emotionally.
4. any interdependent or mutually beneficial relationship between two persons, groups, etc.

There are many examples of symbiosis in the natural world. There's the crocodile bird that eats parasites on the skin of the croc, and in turn the croc doesn't eat the bird. There's the clown fish which protects sea anemones from predators, and in turn the anemone provides shelter to the clown fish from its predators. There's the e-coli bacteria in our digestive tract that help us digest our food, while we provide them with a place to live and food to eat.

Within politics there are symbiotic relationships as well. The most obvious one is between political parties and news organizations.

Paint By Numbers, part 2
Author: BobR    Date: 05/14/2008 12:01:27

Once again we have another election night recap. Once again, little has changed. As expected, Senator Clinton won WV by approximately a 2-to-1 margin. In real numbers, that means she got 16 delegates to Obama's 7, a net gain of nine, shrinking Obama's lead from 168 to 159. This has been described as a "symbolic victory", since it really doesn't help her in a meaningful way, but as to what it's symbolic of is anyone's guess.

It did provide Clinton with an opportunity to exclaim that if Obama couldn't win WV, he couldn't win the White House. Once again, the small fact being overlooked by everyone: Obama got more votes in WV than McCain did. Obama got 91,652 votes, while McCain got 89,683. The Popular Vote Tally has been updated. This seems important to me, considering how she likes to manipulate the numbers...

WV primary Blog... AKA: Mountain Momma
Author: Raine    Date: 05/13/2008 23:00:21

Almost heaven, West Virginia,
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees,
Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze.
Country Roads, take me home,
To the place I belong:
West Virginia, mountain momma,
Take me home, country roads.

All my mem'ries, gather 'round her,
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky,
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.

Country Roads, take me home,
To the place I belong:
West Virginia, mountain momma,
Take me home, country roads.

I hear her voice, in the mornin' hours she calls me,
The radio reminds me of my home far away.
And drivin' down the road,
I get a feelin' that I should have been home yesterday,
Yesterday.

Country Roads, take me home,
To the place I belong:
West Virginia, mountain momma,
Take me home, country roads.

Take me home, country roads.
Take me home, down country roads.

Tonite, we all expect Hillary Clinton to win the WV Primary. Some say it will be a blowout. I dunno.

There are a few other things to watch tonite, particularly Mississippi and Nebraska From a DCCC email:
After losing the last two competitive special elections for Republican seats (IL-14 and LA-06), the NRCC and its conservative allies have gone all out to try to hold MS-01. Republicans have had to spend nearly 20 percent of their cash on hand on a reliably Republican district. Democrats have spent only 4 percent of our cash on hand. The conservative group Freedom’s Watch spent at least $460,000. In total, Republicans have spent at least $1.7 million on MS-01.

Vice President Dick Cheney, Governor Haley Barbour, former Governor Mike Huckabee, Senator Thad Cochran, former Senator Trent Lott, and Senator Roger Wicker have all campaigned on Republican Greg Davis’ behalf in what Politico calls, “one of the safest Republican areas in the nation.” Additionally, President Bush, Laura Bush, and Senator McCain recorded automated calls that were sent to voters throughout the district.

There is also a race in Nebraska... They (the Dems) are choosing a candidate to replace the retiring Chuck Hagel...

So, with that... I say...

Ask a Vet
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/13/2008 10:40:01

Good Morning.

Today is our 1,882nd day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from the warron terra, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4076
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 3937
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3615
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3217
Since Election (1/31/05): 2639

Other Coalition Troops: 312
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 501

We find this morning's cost of war passing through $ 519,208,725,000.00

Do go and look at the counter for a moment if you have the chance...it's strangely mesmerizing to watch how fast our future is being spent.

Turning to our friends at IAVA, we find that a vote on the new GI bill has been delayed. Not by the Republicans this time, but by a small group of "Blue Dog Democrats". Paul Rieckoff's entry on Facebook has more about the bill and ways you can help.

Rush Should be Dead!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 05/11/2008 13:26:40

Limbaugh craves attention.

Go to his website - if you have the stomach - and you will see about 100 dozen pictures of this blowhard pasted all over the place. He is poking his head out from behind blocks of text and graphics, pointing to highlighted links, and holding a big fat cigar that looks a tad, um, phallic.

Of course, there is much mention of the "fact" that Rush Limbaugh was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. As well, Rush sells t-shirts that say (I'm not kidding) "Give Peace a Chance - RUSH" with a big fat Rush on the front and the words "Peace Through Rush" on the back.

Also at the website there is much about Rush's "Operation Chaos", his master plan to subvert the democratic process by having people crossover and vote for Hillary in order to keep her campaign alive and pit democrat against democrat. He is having a GREAT TIME doing this. (Yes, t-shirts are available on his website). He's patting himself on the back so much, that rumor has it he has dislocated both shoulders. He has taken credit for Hillary's 2% win in Indiana. He claims that he is has unified his party and his listeners and will now turns his attention to Obama.

Oddly enough, he does not like his party's presumptive nominee John McCain. So why does he continue with this campaign? Because, I will repeat: Limbaugh craves attention.

Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/10/2008 12:38:14

Good Morning!

We haven't had an honest-to-goodness Libertarian Saturday in a few weeks now....

I'm going to start this morning with a little observation. Given what most people know about Libertarians, and the press' tendency to focus on the soundbite, most Americans think the LP to be a conservative movement. Well....if you know anything about your loyal TriSec, I'm hardly a conservative.

Grover Nordquist's crack about making government so small you can drown it in a bathtub is about the only thing people know about the modern Libertarian movement, but that's not all it's about.

For me...it's the freedom. I find the concepts behind the LP to extraordinarily broad, and instead of the 'bathtub' crack, it might be better to use the Hipporcatic Oath (the one doctors use, not the Hypocratic Oath of the Republicans )

First...do no harm.

What is true liberty? In a Libertarian society, you still wouldn't be able to yell "Fire" in a crowded theater...but if you wanted to stand on a streetcorner and flyer the neighborhood about the government's evils....you wouldn't need a permit. (You do now. Some freedom of speech.)

A lot of folks in the mainstream categorize the LP as the party of drugs and guns....but that's not true either. If you smoke marijuana in the privacy of your own home, who are you hurting? But...you wouldn't be able to smoke and drive a car or work at a job where people would be put in danger, or anything like that.

What I really find attractive about the party is it's foreign policy stance. It's close to the Founding Father's original vision...that the United States should be friendly with all nations, and just stay the heck home and worry about our own people. A tremendously smaller, defensive force for our military would also be the result.

And before anyone jumps on me about being attacked, and having the need to defend our borders....think about this. The US is in just about every country in the world, many of whom want nothing to do with us. We use a tremendous amount of resources that could be used in the native countries, and our treasury is stretched to the limit to support it all.

What benefit to Germany or the United States is there in our being at Ramstein Air Base 63 years after V-E day? If the US wasn't worryng around the globe like Mary Worth, perhaps a lot of the conflicts and death over the past half-century may have been avoided. And don't you think a standing army of 100,000 men, or an air force of 1,000 planes, or just 4 or 5 aircraft carriers would be enough to defend our borders?

Libertarianism is a very large tent. I think it does speak volumes that it attracts all kinds, from super-con Grover to li'l ol socially liberal me. Many of you know that I'm supporting Obama this year in the race (largely on the strength of the endorsement from Bill Richardson), so I think it's important for you all to know that even as a Libertarian, I find his platform attractive enough to actually switch parties this year.

Over my brief April vacation, I did walk down to city hall and change my registration from "unenrolled" (Massachusetts-speak for Independent) to "Democrat".

For me, this is what everyone says...Get Involved! if we truly want our democracy back, if we want our candidates to fight for what we truly want, they're never going to do it unless we tell them to. Democrats aren't Libertarians....but neither ar Republicans. There's room in both parties for some of that old-fashioned Liberty, but it's not going to happen unless we make it happen.

:peace:

Republican Push Poll
Author: BobR    Date: 05/10/2008 00:14:07

I mentioned this in the comments of the Paint By Numbers blog today...

My brother is a registered independent in a suburb of Atlanta, GA. Yesterday, he received a letter and questionnaire from the Republican party. The letter contained his (independent) registration number, and addressed him as “Fellow Republican”.

The questionnaire was a push poll of the nastiest variety. Sample questions:

“Should Republicans do everything they can to prevent liberal Democrats from repealing the USA Patriot Act and other important laws that help our intelligence agencies protect America?”

“Should we do everything we can to stop Democrats from weakening border security?”

“Should Republicans fight for a balanced budget?” (why start now?)

I scanned the letter and the questionnaire. The resultant images are large, so rather than post them here, I uploaded them to the blog’s site, and have provided the links to the images here, so you can see them for yourself:
