The Not So Typical
Author: wickedpam    Date: 09/09/2009 12:35:14

Most people know that I am a bit of a geek about pop culture, most notably television. In this upcoming TV viewing season among all the new sci-fi shows, the primetime soaps and the rehashing of bad 90s programming there is a show that caught my eye: The Good Wife.

The premise of the show is simple; a politician gets caught in a scandal and his wife, a former attorney, is forced back to work when her husband is accused of all sorts of improprieties all the while standing by him. Well at least that’s what the commercials tell me. I don’t know whether this is going to be a good show or not, but what I find interesting is how often we’ve seen a new version of “the good wife” in the past few years.

Medal of Honor
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/08/2009 10:36:51

Good Morning.

We'll skip the statistics this morning; I've got a long story to tell.

On December 21, 1862, President Lincoln signed a measure into law that created America's highest military honor. According to the bill, the award was "to be bestowed upon such petty officers, seamen, landsmen, and Marines as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry and other seamanlike qualities during the present war."

During the Civil War, over 1,500 of these medals were awarded for valor; but since then the numbers have continued to fall and the requirements and burden of proof have grown more stringent. Since the withdrawal of US forces from Vietnam in 1973, the award has been given just 7 times.

On September 17, Sergeant Jared C. Monti will become the 8th post-Vietnam recipient of the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony.

The Medal of Honor Citation is written in dry, militarese, but it's still worth reading.

Labor Day
Author: clintster    Date: 09/07/2009 02:35:28

Today, as we gather together to grill processed meats, shop for incredible bargains, and relax watching some baseball, we should take a moment to consider why we celebrate Labor Day.

All or Nothing. Wherein, I whine.
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/06/2009 13:59:31

President Obama continues to play nice. I suppose that's his job and one of the things we admired about him when we elected him - but I tire of niceness. What good is being nice and considerate if angry and uneducated, uninformed Republicans are going to continue to play assholes. Yes, I said it. Van Jones understood it and after watching the town hall brawl/meetings this year, I think we can say that without feeling our usual Liberal guilt. Assholes. ASS-Holes!

I want to be the asshole this time: I DON'T WANT A WATERED DOWN HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL. I want a bill that will actually be reform. Is that too much to ask?

My Fellow Americans...
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/05/2009 10:54:40

Good Morning!

Well, kids in Waltham have already gone back to school. Young Javier has already had two days of school this week, but was curiously off for the long weekend on Friday.

I'm thinking of giving him an extra-long weekend. After all, the friggin' president is going to have himself beamed into the classrooms on Tuesday in order to indoctrinate our youth into the democrat/socialist party with some drivel about healthcare.

My God, imagine the nerve of the President, taking up valuable class time to talk about who-knows-what. That's time wasted that our students could be reciting the pledge of allegiance or praying in school. I tellya, that's when the American edumacation system went in the shitter.

Apathy, What is it Good For?
Author: Random    Date: 09/04/2009 10:18:17

I've never claimed to be the hippest kid on the block. Infact, there's bout a 83% chance I'm whiter than Michael Steele. But even I know what it means not to care. Especially when it comes to presidencies, and crazy people. And for some reason it's evil to have a president speak to kids on TV but it's perfectly okay to read them "My Pet Goat" during a national crisis.

A better man than me.

I did not even know this was a controversy until this morning. Van Jones, the WH green Jobs adviser evidently called Republicans 'assholes'. He apologized for it. While I understand the sensitivity of working in the White House and the politics involved, I for one would like to say I stand with you, Van Jones.

Politics for Partisan Sake
Author: BobR    Date: 09/02/2009 12:18:12

Surely we deserve better. As a child, I remember learning about our political system, and how parties played into it. It used to be the Democrats pushed for change, and the Republicans tried to slow it down, and we would make slow assured progress. Both parties had the essentially the same goals but one varied only in the speed with which they wanted to get there. At least - that's how I remember it was supposed to work.

The very next morning Bush said he never expected the Levees to break. Condoleeza Rice went to the US open in Queens, New York and then shoe shopping and 5 days after this catastrophe hit the Gulf Coast, there was still no command center set up. The whole timeline is here.

I will never be able to fully get over how badly this crisis was handled. The storm was awful, but its aftermath was the tragedy.
