8 days to undo 8 years.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/27/2008 12:29:49

8 days, everyone... 8 days to undo 8 long years of a failure of epic proportions.

Take a deep breath... close your eyes. Exhale. Allow yourself to believe that this can happen. Allow yourself to dream. Do you remember what it was like to imagine possibility? Pause. Breath again. Exhale. Open your eyes. Yes, the world is still here. Watching. We have 8 days to tell the world that we can do this, yes we can.

A Day in the life of a Democratic Operative
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 10/26/2008 12:46:30

We awake before the sun is up. I drank way to much Moet Chandon last night, and my head is pounding, my throat is sore. I must have been screaming, again. I just hope I didn’t make a fool of myself, running around naked and ranting insanely to a crowded room. My rants never go far and eventually end up with me curled in the fetal position in the corner of the ballroom, weeping. There is no telling what I’ll do during these black tie fundraisers.

Barry is still asleep. Once again, we’ve slept in the same bed. He must have been as drunk as me. No. We aren’t having an affair, I’m not his type, when he’s not with his wife, Michelle – who he fondly calls “Button Head” – he’s with some 14-year-old super model. Mostly he goes for the ones from South America.

I get up and phone the hotel’s private valet to alert the chef for our breakfast. The usual for Barry: 3 egg whites with smoked Salmon, Fresh fruit and yogurt, and Veuve de Vernay & Orange Juice. For me: A shitake mushroom omelet with applewood smoked salmon, Biscuits and a Bloody Mary with a shot of 40-year-old Glenfiddich. Of course we’ll need plenty of coffee and some painkillers for our headache.

Bob Barr Memorial Sinkhole
Author: TriSec    Date: 10/25/2008 10:39:54

Good Morning!

Well, if it's a Saturday blog before 7am, that can only mean one thing....it's time for my monthly platelet donation. I've been doing this for about 8 years now, and I'm one of the Dedham Donor Center's most predictable and reliable sources. It doesn't hurt (much), and if you're already a blood donor, why not go to the next level? Blood supplies are always critical; as a perishable item, the national supply is only good for a few days at most. But don't take my word for it...check out your local donor center.

And here's a link to the latest Apherisis Newsletter sent by the Dedham Donor Center...

So, on to the business at hand. As we near the election (240 hours to go as of this writing), the Libertarian Party's ballot access campaign is starting to wind down. It looks like Mr. Barr will be listed on 45 state ballots this election cycle. That's significantly more states than allowed them on in 2004, but I'm sorry to say that Connecticut won't be one of them.

Everyone to the lifeboats
Author: BobR    Date: 10/24/2008 12:28:56

With just over a week left in the campaign, the weirdness is really starting to kick in. The rats are fleeing the sinking ship, and the true supporters for the apparent loser are getting increasingly desperate. Every news item leaves the mind further agog.

The news yesterday that former Bush press secretary Scottie McClellan supports Obama was both shocking and banal. Everyone kind of assumed it, but it was surprising to hear him say it out loud. He joins Colin Powell in the "former Bushies for Obama" club.

Did Sarah violate the McCain Fiengold Act?
Author: Raine    Date: 10/23/2008 19:22:07

I am just putting this out there. Many others are more scholarly than I am regarding the law. I am more than willing to be wrong, but I will never NOT question -- Now it's your turn. What do you think?

From the McCain Fiengold act of 2002:

It's a Clothing Gap.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/23/2008 12:25:05

Clothes. To some they matter; to others - not so much. In this case, I think it really matters. Sarah Palin, on the RNC dime spent a lot of money on Clothes in September. About $150,000. It leaves questions tho.
The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission's long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use.

Politico asked the McCain campaign for comment on Monday, explicitly noting the $150,000 in expenses for department store shopping and makeup consultation that were incurred immediately after Palin’s announcement. Pre-September reports do not include similar costs.

It's the Economy, Stupid
Author: BobR    Date: 10/22/2008 12:29:35

John McCain says he wants to focus on the economy. All research shows that the electorate trusts Obama on the economy more than McCain. So if talking about the economy helps Obama, and that's what McCain wants to talk about, let's do it! Cue the organ music as we enter the Big Top of this 3 ring circus...

In the first ring, we have the stock market. Despite the bailout rescue package, there are still fears about a recession. The futures market is a good indication of where Wall St. thinks the market is headed, and it fell 250 points:

Checking in with our friends at IAVA, they too have taken note of all the attention being showered on "Joe the plumber". But IAVA has different concerns. What about Jim and Jane the veterans?

Lead by example, be inspired by a leader
Author: Raine    Date: 10/20/2008 12:30:45

Cape Fear, BBQ, Fayettville, NC.
Obama arrived at the barbecue joint around 12:30 p.m., where an older and majority white clientele of several dozen were eating lunch after church services. Many patrons applauded as he walked into the diner, but Diane Fanning, 54, began yelling “Socialist, socialist, socialist — get out of here!

Obama did not look directly at her, as she was across the diner, but it was loud enough that he most likely heard her.

The gentleman next to Fanning, Lenox Bramble, 76, flashed an angry look at her. “Be civil, be courteous,” he admonished her. Another woman, Cecilia Hayslip, 61, yelled back at Fanning (per Reuters), “At least he’s not a warmonger!”
[...]
Later, Obama came to the long table where Fanning and other members of a local First Presbyterian church were gathered. He held out his hand to her and asked, “How are you, ma’am?” but she declined to shake his hand.
I am sorry to start a Monday off with the hatred from the trail, but this story I found interesting. I found the graciousness and class in our nominee inspiring.

Good manners are a duty
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 10/19/2008 12:27:41

Sorry I’ve not been by to visit of late, but this is Velveeta’s busy time of year. And, among other things I’ve gotten dreadfully behind in my thank you letters:

Clarion Fund
255 W. 63 Street
New York, NY 10001

Dear Mr. Clarion,

Thank you for the lovely, and quite unexpected, gift of a DVD entitled “Obsession, Radical Islam’s war Against the West”. I don’t know how little ol’ me qualified for such bounty, but I am never one to question my good fortunes.

I would be remiss for not properly thanking you for the gift; however, I do hope that you did not require more of a commitment from me, such as a review of the film. If so, I must be honest and inform you that an accident befell my sweet gift.

In my unwrapping excitement, the disc fell onto my tile kitchen floor, landing, as fate would have it, on the “play” side. While attempting to pick it up, I clumsily stepped on it and slide across the room! Sadly, and with great sorrow, I must tell you that through some bizarre happenstance, and with DVD still underfoot, we slide across the kitchen like a splayed gazelle on ice, over the room divide and into the great room with its rustic knotty pine floor, continuing into the bedroom and finally coming to rest in my bathroom at the base of the commode!

You can only imagine my horror and grief when I was able to retrieve my gift and found that it was scratched beyond repair!
