Duty to Others
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/03/2008 10:50:28

Good Day.

Well, by now most of you know that I had an opportunity to relocate to Maine. You also probably know it didn't work out. It wasn't work; it was the home front. Without baring my soul too much....Mrs. TriSec and I faced a true marital crisis over this one. We've been through many things together, but for the first time, the thought of leaving did cross my mind.

We're over the hump now, after a few tumultuous weeks...and there's a reason I was able to pull myself back together. In times of need, we all go back to that rock, that one thing we've always turned to in a time of need.

You probably know that I've been a Scout and Scouter since I was 8 years old. 2008, in fact, is my 20th year as a registered adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America.

Disparate things? Maybe. Or Maybe not.

One Nation, Under the Thumb
Author: BobR    Date: 05/02/2008 12:27:52

It was hard to miss the news item yesterday, despite the 5 minutes it garnered before slipping away again. The DC Madam "committed suicide" in a shed behind her mother's house. This is the same DC madam that had names and dirt on a lot of powerful DC insiders according to news reports:
The so-called "D.C. Madam" vowed she would never go to federal prison for running a high-end Washington prostitution ring. Not even for a day.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey made good on that promise Thursday when she went to a shed outside her mother's mobile home and hanged herself from a rafter with nylon rope.

The 52-year-old Palfrey was convicted two weeks ago of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington's political elite, including Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican. She was free while she awaited sentencing on July 24.

Her 76-year-old mother, Blanche Palfrey, found the body in the tiny shed outside the pink and white mobile home in the community of mostly retirees in this Gulf Coast town 20 miles northwest of Tampa

The news spin on this is that she said "she'd never go to jail". What they're failing to report is that she also said she'd never commit suicide, and if it appeared she did, it wouldn't be true:

We paid a price...
Author: Raine    Date: 05/01/2008 12:14:47

Today marks the 5 year anniversary of "Mission Accomplished". On this day, pResident *ush announced, "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended," Bush said at the time. "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." [source]

As you know, every Tuesday we have a blog here called Ask a Vet, and the numbers tell us what a lie this was. Yesterday, the White house said they paid a price for that fateful day. 'What?' you say? They admitted a mistake? Why YES!
They Paid the Price...
After shifting explanations, the White House eventually said the "Mission Accomplished" phrase referred to the carrier's crew completing its 10-month mission, not the military completing its mission in Iraq. Bush, in October 2003, disavowed any connection with the "Mission Accomplished" message. He said the White House had nothing to do with the banner; a spokesman later said the ship's crew asked for the sign and the White House staff had it made by a private vendor.

"President Bush is well aware that the banner should have been much more specific and said `mission accomplished' for these sailors who are on this ship on their mission," White House press secretary Dana Perino said Wednesday. "And we have certainly paid a price for not being more specific on that banner. And I recognize that the media is going to play this up again tomorrow, as they do every single year."

She said what is important now is "how the president would describe the fight today. It's been a very tough month in Iraq, but we are taking the fight to the enemy."

At least 49 U.S. troops died in Iraq in April, making it the deadliest month since September when 65 U.S. troops died.

The Martyr
Author: BobR    Date: 04/30/2008 12:52:32

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life... (John 3:17)

According to Websters, a martyr is "a person who is put to death or endures great suffering on behalf of any belief, principle, or cause". About 2000 years ago, Jesus allowed himself to be martyred for the sins of mankind (if you believe the Christian Bible). There are two types of martyrs: Those that allow themselves to be nailed to the cross for the greater good, and those that nail themselves to the cross so they can feel noble and important. There are too many of the latter, and not enough of the former in this world.

Good Morning.

Today is our 1,868th day in Iraq.

Other Coalition Troops: 309
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 494

We find this morning's cost of war passing through: $ 515, 290, 925, 000 .00

I've got an interesting first-hand account of Baghdad that comes to us via our friends at IAVA. I'm skipping their website in favor of the original source today, I'm sure Paul won't mind. In any case, New York artist Steve Mumford was originally embedded with the troops in 2003...he's been back several times since.

What A Meet-Up!
Author: m-hadley    Date: 04/28/2008 10:42:12

This past weekend I flew to Washington DC with the intention of meeting up with some online friends - folks I'd never actually met before but with whom I already felt a strong connection. On Saturday night I participated in the FourFreedoms Meet Up at the Holiday Inn in Rosslyn (a block and a half off of DC's Metro Blue Line). I shared a room with Starling, an adorable lesbianite who had inadvertently booked a suite with a sofa, coffee table, comfy chairs, two balconies for the smokers, plenty of tabletop space and a working ice machine just down the hall. Among those attending the Four Freedoms Meet-up were Mondo (from Jacksonville), BobR & Raine from Atlanta, ShelaghC, HoneyBearKelly, Livingoli, Wicked Pam (Mala), Starling, Stanley, the blog's official lurker (every blog must have one ) and me (mfaye).

Hi everyone!

We could probably get away with skipping today, since most of our members will be on the road after a succesful meetup in Washington....

But, we also have a reputation to maintain. So....here's a free-form blog today. Make something of it if you can!

Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 04/26/2008 11:16:56

Good Morning!

I trust the sun is finding our traveling contingent well this morn....flip off the White House for me today if you get a chance...

I'm off to BALOO training this morning at scout camp. "BAsic Leadership Outdoor Orientation". Yeah, I know it seems silly for a 20-year veteran, but Council says I have to have the piece of paper in order to lead an outing...

In any case, let's see what's going on around here today.

We in America have a love/hate relationship with our third parties. While it's great to have extra voices in the debate, when push comes to shove, nobody votes for them because it's seen as a "wasted vote". But what if we actually voted on principle, instead of our lifelong habits? I was raised a Democrat by a liberal college administrator here in the Northeast, so I have a genetic predisposition to vote for the "Big D". Somewhere south of me is a preacher's son who has always voted "R" since he turned 18. But do we just do this by rote, or can we break the cycle and truly make a difference?

His Last Speech
Author: BobR    Date: 04/25/2008 10:51:38

Since I am heading out of town early this morning, I am going to be lazy with today's blog post. I read this article in the Sunday Parade magazine and thought it was well worth a read for everyone else that may not have seen it. I have someone close to me who's husband is dying from pancreatic cancer, so I am posting this in her honor...

====================================================
My Last Lecture

At many colleges, professors are asked to give a “last lecture.” In this talk, they ruminate on what matters most to them. As they speak, audiences mull the same question: What wisdom would you impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?

Last year, I agreed to give a last lecture at Carnegie Mellon University, where I’m a professor in the computer science department. A few weeks later, I learned that I had only months to live—I was dying of pancreatic cancer.

I knew I could cancel. I have three young children, I’m married to Jai, the woman of my dreams, and there were so many things to be done. But by speaking, I knew I could put myself in a bottle that would one day wash up on the beach for my children, Dylan, Logan and Chloe. Here’s what I want to share.
