The State of the State
Author: BobR    Date: 04/09/2008 12:42:46

After hearing about Illinois State Rep Monique Davis (D) on the KO Countdown show last night, it reminded me of how bad the state government is here in GA. So I decided to do a "State of the State" for GA. And how is the state of the state?

The state of the state of Georgia is... awful. Well - what can you expect from a state with a Republican Governor and a Republican majority in both houses of the state legislature? This was a particularly awful year with horrible bills and bad behavior by a group of incompetents. The information in this post has been culled and quoted directly from the AJC and the Creative Loafing Golden Sleaze Awards.

First, the worst bills that passed into law:

OPENING DAY!
Author: TriSec    Date: 04/08/2008 17:08:01

It's springtime in New England. That can only mean one thing...F-16s Screaming over Fenway Park!

Of course...we've been here before.

http://www.bestsportsphotos.com/image.php?productid=24168

So, let's take a look inside the confines of Friendly Fenway Park, where after today's festivities, there's going to be an actual baseball game...

Today's Pitchers:

For Detroit:

Kenny Rogers, LHP, 0-1, 3.00

For Boston:

Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP, 1-0, 2.31

There is, of course, a pithy preview posted on a couple of the websites. Speaking of which, there's many places to "watch" the ballgame on line, but my favorite is a little site I call the CBS Baseball Crack Device. Check it out!

We'll let the inimitable Dan Shaughnessy take us up to the first pitch.

Thom Hartmann's Independent Thinker "Book [DVD] of the Month," Exclusively on BuzzFlash.com : "The 11th Hour" DVD just being released. Executive Producer and Narrator, Leonardo DiCaprio. Read Thom's Review (he's in it too), watch the trailer, buy it from BuzzFlash and help save planet earth:
How bad are things? Worse than you ever could have imagined. How good can they become? Better than you ever could have imagined. Al Gore's film is about global warming and the life of Al Gore. Leonardo DiCaprio's new movie, The 11th Hour, is about Everything.

This movie moves seamlessly from the global environmental crisis, to species loss, to crises in energy, trash, and toxins. The breadth is breathtaking.

God Morning again everyone... It is Mondee...I woke up and . My alarm went off, and I turned it off by mistake, then suddenly I realized what time it was . I promise that audicon blog will be coming one day.

So I perused the headlines, and came across this From the Guardian UK:
Fears are mounting that Wall Street banks are relying too heavily on tens of billions of dollars in loans made available by the US Federal Reserve. Their borrowing levels have rocketed by almost 200 per cent to $38bn (£19bn) a day in just three weeks.

There is far more at the link, But it seems as tho Wall street is addcited to the Federal reserve. 200%? 34 BILLION DOLLARS A DAY?

The Eye of the Storm: Global temps may drop this year but, alas, world still warming - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7329799.stm Global temperatures for 2008 will be slightly cooler than last year as a result of the cold La Nina current in the Pacific.
Mr Scaife told the BBC: "What's happened now is that La Nina has come along and depressed temperatures slightly but these changes are very small compared to the long-term climate change signal, and in a few years time we are confident that the current record temperature of 1998 will be beaten when the La Nina has ended."

Suckers!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 04/06/2008 13:56:13

You're so vain you probably think this [blog] is about you........ Carly Simon

Velveeta does NOT take kindly to being suckered. Not that she has been of late. Just wanted to point it out.

The majority of the American people though, don't seem to mind it. I am fascinated by this type of person. The ones that buy bottled water, watch reality TV and believe everything they hear on main stream media from the likes of Tweety, Wolf, Brit and the rest of the corporate talking heads that spew crap out of their mouths. Sadly, most of these suckers also voted for our current clam-head administration because, well, they thought Bush would be fun to have a beer with!

I fucking kid you not. If you time-traveled from the past and I told you this was how we picked our leaders you'd never believe it.

The bush mafia suckered congress into believing that Iraq had WMD's. How did this happen? Because that very nice black General, Colin Powell, well, he got up there and showed us some pictures and told us that they were chemical weapons factories and stockpiles of various and sundry deadly missiles that could be used against us and our allies. Colin Powell had a hard life and he was able to achieve success in a white mans world, CERTAINLY he wouldn't lie to us. Would he?

McCain and the Hundred Years War
Author: TriSec    Date: 04/05/2008 13:08:53

Good Morning!

Perhaps you remember John McCain's comment about us spending the next 100 years in Iraq. Obviously, he's gone nuts, but he made the comparison to Germany and Japan, two countries we defeated in war 63 years ago.

By all accounts, both nations are modern, efficient paragons of today's society. Wouldn't you just love it if American cars were as good as the German ones, or if our rail system worked like Japan's?

63 years is an awfully long time for an occupying army to hang around...considering the average age of the typical American Soldier, we've been there for perhaps 4 generations of military men and women.

It's been said that those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it...but that's different than living in the past expecting to fight the last war.

Noted Libertarian columnist Charley Reese has an interesting take on McCain's school of thought....and it's Strategic Manure.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968

Forty Years ago this evening.
One shot. He was dead. He died trying to help those take a step up for themselves. I find it striking that today we still have no voice, no leader. No one to help lead the cause of non-violent civil disobedience. One shot.

I myself would love to tell you I miss the man. I cannot. I was a mere 7 months old when he was slain. As I grew up I found myself more and more drawn to his legacy: his teaching, the entire civil Rights movement in America... from there it led to a fascinating journey that showed me how tolerant and intolerant we really are -- still -- today as a nation. We are still a very divided nation. We still have a long way to go.
