I read a news story yesterday that got me thinking (not unusual, but stay with me on this). According to this story, over 80,000 artifacts have gone missing from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library:
WASHINGTON -- The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is unable to find or account for tens of thousands of valuable mementos of Reagan's White House years because a "near universal" security breakdown left the artifacts vulnerable to pilfering by insiders, an audit by the National Archives inspector general has concluded.

Inspector General Paul Brachfeld said that his office was investigating allegations that a former employee stole Reagan memorabilia but that the probe had been hampered by the facility's sloppy record-keeping.

Savor that for a moment... close your eyes... Let it roll around on your tongue...

Rudy, Pat and John....
Author: Raine    Date: 11/08/2007 13:05:17

Good morning everyone...

There is a lot of stuff going on today, and I simply do not know where to begin. First off and MOST important... if you have any little people, or know of anyone with little people, please call them and tell them that Aqua-Dots™ HAVE been recalled.. I myself seemed to be the bearer of bad news yesterday when I called friends who have 2 little people that were really counting on them for Christmas. They did not believe me at first... so do not assume that everyone reads the news like you! :peace:

Pat Robertson endorsed Guiliani. This was a rather stunning endorsement. It is becoming more and more clear to me, that the Christian Coalition seems a bit, well fractured these days. When you have an endorsement like this from someone who is so radical in his social beliefs as Robertson endorsing a person who actually does support a woman's right to choose... you have to wonder what the hell is going on here? It seems to me that power and control take precident over anything else these days.

It leaves me wondering what is more important to Pat - God or Republicans? But, hey... I guess it goes both ways. Rudy happily accepted the nomination from a man who once said "(T)he feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians." .
It seems a little puzzling to me.

Batteries not included...
Author: BobR    Date: 11/07/2007 12:57:29

The introduction of the Cheney impeachment resolution yesterday got me thinking about the American people. We are not so different from people the world over - we all want fairness. We want fairness when we go to the market... We are willing to pay a fair price for a good product, and know that if we go for cheap, we often end up with cheap disposable crap. However, if we go for the good stuff and we don't get what we paid for, we feel cheated and get angry.

In Nov 2006, the voting public went to the polls and kicked out the Republicans in impressive numbers. We were told (and sold) on the idea that the Democratic product was different... better, than the Republican product. The Democrats were coming to town, kicking ass and taking names. The war was going to be over, and a new day was dawning in DC...

Except - that didn't happen.

What we got was more of the same talk, and nothing to back it up. We got a used-car salesman telling us that the rusty hole in the roof was a sunroof. We opened the package to find out that the batteries weren't included (nor spines, apparently).

Democracy Doesn't Work
Author: Raine    Date: 11/05/2007 13:01:53

That is the message that our leading ally in the Waronterra ™ sent over the weekend when he placed his country under military rule.

He threw the constitutional powers in his nation in order to curb extremism. He said he had to suspend the courts because of *judicial activism*. (Does that phrase sound familiar?)

He is delaying the January elections in his country for at least a year. He pulled off the air all independent media.

He made it against the law to speak ill of him or his leaders. He has had arrested many of the leaders of the opposition parties.

Lawyers are being beaten by Pakastani police and hundreds have been arrested for voicing dissent.

All day long yesterday I walked around stunned at the collassal problem this poses for not just Pakastanis, but for the entire world. I thought about the fact that America uses Pakastani airspace to enter Afghanistan. I thought about the fact that Pakastan has a nuclear weapon. I thought about the saber rattling in Washington over Iran. I realized that what Pakistan has done to it's nation is the very thing that Bush has been worried about in Iran... and this is our ally.

Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/03/2007 13:37:53

Good Morning!

New England is in full-on "storm panic" this morning. Hurricane Noel is brushing by the outer cape today, and the news has branded it "as bad as the Perfect Storm", so there isn't a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread to be found in the six-state region. Somehow, I think we'll be OK, but we are expecting up to 3 inches of rain and wind over 50 mph for most of the day.

If you still subscribe to Time magazine, you may have seen a little essay in the October 18th issue called "Libertarians Rising". While I don't have a link, there was a little blurb in this weeks' Liberator Online...

It was 31 Years ago today...

Jimmy Carter was on his way... (apologies to the Beatles)

Nov 2, 1976: Jimmy Carter beats "incumbent" Gerald Ford to become the 39th President of the United States. For four years, the country got the best and worst of a Democratic president. It was a turbulent time with runaway inflation, worries of nuclear proliferation, and the populace awakening to the problems of pollution.

In Jan 1976, it certainly didn't seek like Jimmy Carter was going to be president. He was the first choice of only 4% of Democratic voters. Nine months later he was elected. Note: For anyone to say Hillary is a shoe-in, this should shut them up.

Ask any person who remembers Carter fondly, and they'll wax poetic on Carter's initiatives. He was the first (and only president) to put solar cells on the roof of the White House. He brokered a peace deal between Egypt and Israel that helped saved thousands of lives and untold destruction. He put together the SALT II treaty to help move away from nuclear proliferation. He imposed sanctions on countries that we had historically been buddies with if they were guilty of state-sponsored human rights abuses.

Also known as, I am not gay, I love my wife....

So, Richard Curtis resigned. Do you know Richard Curtis?

Rep. Richard Curtis, 48, said he was resigning immediately to spare his wife and children more public embarrassment. In a written statement, Curtis said, "Events that have recently come to light have hurt a lot of people. I sincerely apologize for any pain my actions may have caused."

Curtis, a Republican, told a newspaper in his southwest Washington district on Monday that sex was not involved in what he said was an extortion attempt. He also declared he was not gay.

But in police reports, Curtis said he was being extorted by a man he had sex with at a hotel room in Spokane, where Curtis was attending a GOP retreat. The other man, Cody Castagna, 26, contends Curtis reneged on a promise to pay $1,000 for sex.
Yeah, extortion... computer says nooooo

Debate Recap
Author: BobR    Date: 10/31/2007 12:04:30

The Democratic debate last night was significant and trivial, inspiring and infuriating, focused and chaotic. In short - it was a microcosm of our political system.

Personally, I found the constant focus on Hillary distracting and aggravating. At least half the debate was Hillary being attacked or Hillary defending herself. While it's true that the media and the Republicans have already dubbed her the winner, the intense focus on her set up an atmosphere of "trash Hillary" (which was pointed out by Bill Richardson). She's certainly my least-favorite candidate, but I thought the moderators and some of the other candidates could've done better to spread the time and topics around.

In fact, one of the most aggravating things about the debate was how little time was afforded the non-front-runner candidates.
