A crappy tale.
Author: Raine    Date: 04/12/2010 13:30:14

This weekend, we had the lovely pleasure of attending the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade. It was wonderful seeing Mala, laughing and enjoying the marching bands, the balloons and the floats. At one point, I needed to use the 'facilities' and took a walk over to a line of portapotties. I saw 2 lines for a row of about 40 or so- and found out quickly that for some reason, only 2 were unlocked. Yes, I was irritated at this unfortunate turn of events but in line I went.

As luck would have it, a few minutes later more people arrived. They immediately started complaining. It didn't take long for one man to proclaim (in disgust) "These are my tax dollars at work, what a joke". The anger from this vocal group increased as we waiting in line, as did the decibels. One man kept calling a number expecting to get someone to come down and unlock the doors. The woman suggested calling 911. Once again 'it's our tax dollars, after all'.

These folks were definitely from out of town, they came to DC to enjoy the Cherry Blossom festival. They were not pleased. Hell no one was pleased. There is nothing pleasant about seeing over 40 bathrooms and only 2 are available for usage. What struck me was the amount of complaining they were doing was actually upsetting the people around them. We were all in the same boat after all. But that comment -- about 'our Tax dollars' stuck in my craw. They were told that there were other facilities available but 2 refused to leave the line- 'out of principle'. More complaining when their friends returned refreshed. As for myself, I would not have been able to make the walk. So I resigned myself. Choices were made.

When I got back half an hour later, and one phone call to see if I was alright, I told my tale. Mala hit it right on the head- 'No this wasn't THEIR tax dollars at work, this was the City of DC's tax dollars at work'.

It seems typical anti-government conservative anger these days: Be angry, don't let facts get in the way, blame something for your anger and refuse to acknowledge you were given a choice. Also, it's important to let this all foment on a foundation of simply being against something. David Gergen wrote an essay reminding people that you can't just always be angry, worried and against something.
A little cheering up will lighten spirits and fortify us for the tough journey ahead.

Remember back in the mid-’60s how disgraceful it was—and how insoluble it seemed—that a third of Americans over 65 lived in poverty and more than half had no health insurance? Today, less than 10% are impoverished, and every senior has insurance. Only a third of young children attended nursery school or kindergarten in the mid-’60s; today, some two-thirds do.
[...]
"Remember, too, in the 1970s, when waves of criminal violence swept over us and in big cities people were afraid to venture out after dark? Now nightlife bustles from San Francisco to Boston, Chicago to New York. Since 1993, the year before New York City introduced its innovative methodology, CompStat, grand larcenies are down more than 55%, homicides by 76%, and auto thefts by 90%.

Americans rightly worry today about jobs and about the economic ascendency of China and other Asian nations. But we still have the capacity to win out because we remain the most creative, entrepreneurial people on the globe. There are more than four Chinese people for every American, yet Americans have won 30 Nobel prizes in science and economics in the past five years, while the Chinese have been awarded one. Even though our numbers have fallen some, Americans earned 49% of new patents, the Chinese, 1%. In the most recent statistics available, the U.S. also accounted for a fourth of peer-reviewed research articles in the world and a third of research and development investments, and we continue to grant more doctorates in engineering and science than any other nation."
Too many people are still out of work, and many are still struggling. People still have problems, even if things are getting better. Economically, these past few year have been a terrible burden for many Americans. That said, Gergan has a point that you aren't going to be able to go forward if you have no hope for the future.

If people only fuel themselves with anger and resentment they will only beget more anger and resentment. The Tea party and the Conservatives know this and work on it twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The media helps fuel it. They are trying to take away all hope for the future, so people will become so despondent that they will not even vote their own best interests. Or, in this case walk to another toilet.

If you have to wait in line you have a right to be angry, just be angry at the right things and figure out a solution to the problem. Otherwise, you become the problem. Most of us have enough already.

Happy Monday!

and
Raine

Good Morning!

Well, I was at the store Saturday; it was "spring sports weekend". Apparently, they needed my scouting expertise on the sales floor...

Sunday morning, I went down to Camp Massasoit (BSA) in South Plymouth (Exit 2, for those in the know) and taught a firebuilding and knife & axe safety class to ten-year-old boys. Fun, fun...

And then, I spent Sunday afternoon commiserating with my Polish neighbor. She's not of Polish extraction; she's a native Pole here in the US for work. She was a mess.

I'm still a bit taken aback by that myself; that's still astonishing what happened. Imagine Air Force One piling it in with everyone on board, that's essentially what happened. Our President, Vice President, and House Speaker do not travel together precisely for that reason.

Good morning, bloggers!! Raine, thanks for an interesting post. Constant anger can warp a person.

We do need to have serious changes in our trade and industrial policies, but I think we can make this decade one where we rebuilt America.

Agreed Will -- That is what I liked about the Gergen piece, things are not perfect, but they are not unable to get better. I do not agree with everything this administration is doing, but our nation is resilient-- it will remain so as long as its people do. There ARE those out there that are more than happy to have people believe otherwise

From 1948-1967, the city of Jerusalem was divided between Israel and Jordan. During the Six Day War, Israeli forces captured East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and the Sinai Peninsula.

The holiest city in Judaism, the Wailing Wall, is in East Jerusalem. It is the remnants of the retaining wall of the Second Temple, destroyed by the Romans. During Jordanian rule in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, many Jewish holy sites were neglected or vandalized. Cemeteries were uprooted.

I think that there will ultimately be a two-state solution, where it is likely that Jerusalem is the capitol of Israel and an independent Palestine. One issue will be how to keep the city open and ensure that all people have access to their holy places.

Many in the GOP were honest when they said that they want Obama to fail. A ruined economy will allow them to obtain power. However, I think that the policies of Reaganomics -- sadly carried out for the last 30 years -- have helped to strip this nation of many jobs, industrial facilities, and left us less able to adapt. We are no longer able to build many things in this country on our own -- such as some of our military equipment. So, may I ask the GOP what is patriotic about outsourcing all our industries, including ones which are vital for national defense. (The U.S. steel industry, in particular, has faced a steady decline in the past three decades.)

Yes, it is a solemn day.

I planned to go to a Yom HaShoah service yesterday, but ended up at the wrong temple here in Northwest Indiana. (Next time, I will ask someone at the place I have been going for directions.)

Here is the Haaretz story on YomHaShoah. (I do recommend that people check out this Israeli liberal daily as there is a lot of interesting stuff in it. I often find things in the foreign press that I do not find in our media.)

Israel marks Holocaust Remembrance Day with sirens, memorials

By Haaretz Service and The Associated Press

Israel fell silent on Monday morning as a two-minute-long siren wailed across the country to mark Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Day.

As the siren sounded at 10 A.M., traffic came to a total standstill. Drivers stood next to their cars and pedestrians stopped walking, many of them standing at attention or with their heads bowed.

The siren opened the annual memorial at Yad Vashem, Israel's state Holocaust memorial authority, in Jerusalem. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the memorial for the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

Other ceremonies will be held throughout the day at Kibbutz Yad Mordechai and Kibbutz Lohamei Hagetaot, as well as in schools and military bases.

FDR was vilified by many as a traitor to his class, yet he may have saved American capitalism. His name was spoken with respect on the day that he died in the death camps as they were being liberated. Perhaps that was the most fitting tribute to FDR and a renunciation of his enemies.

Here is Edward R. Murrow's report from Buchenwald:

Say, I have recently learned that there's a bona-fide Tea Party Rally taking place on Boston Common this Wednesday. I'm only 3 subway stops away, if it's at a favorable hour (noon), I may attend.

However, I wonder if I might get beat up, because I've heard recently that the Party is on the lookout for "liberals" that might be taking pictures to "make them look stupid". I'll certainly be snapping away, should I make it.

And guess who is NOT attending the Boston Rally?

Report: Church abuse claims are 'Zionist attack', bishop says

By Haaretz Service

A retired Italian bishop has sparked a furious row after quotes attributed to him suggested claims of sexual abuse in the Catholic church are a Jewish conspiracy, a British newspaper reported on Monday.

A website quoted Giacomo Babini, emeritus bishop of Grosseto, as saying he believed a "Zionist attack" was behind the criticism, considering how "powerful and refined" the criticism is, the Guardian daily reported.

Babini has denied the comments, which follow a series of statements from Catholic churchmen alleging the existence of plots to weaken the church and Pope Benedict XVI.

Allegedly speaking to the Catholic website Pontifex, the 81-year-old was quoted as saying: "They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers."

There are times when I hear such remarks in this country and wonder how long it will be safe for Jews in America. My hope is that bigotry of all sorts will be banished to the same dung heap of history that holds human sacrifice. (We still have slavery in the world, and I hope that slavery soon is thrown on the dung heap of history as well.)

Good morning everyone.

This was a busy weekend for me as MSG was chock full of events with some multiples going on at the same time and from Thursday through Saturday afternoon we were having problems with our phone system which created problems with my ability to talk with the production truck and the studio in the Garden and other issues and I basically had to smack down engineering to get it fixed. And nothing was as fun as going from a 3 PM Rangers game to a 6 PM Knicks game which was compounded by the Rangers going to OT and shootout which with only a 10 min. postgame and the Knicks telecast had to start 6 minutes late. At least the Ranger loss eliminated them from playoff contention which will lighten our workload starting this week.

BTW, Since I am off this Saturday for a change, I got a ticket for that show with Momma on Saturday. So, I have something to look forward to.

It is not surprising to see that bigotry continues in old institutions. Bigotry is like some of the ugly weeds that I am rooting out at home today. You chop them down, and they come back -- and rooting them out is a royal pain.

Ya know, the Teabaggers still ain't smaht.

Alas, the rally Wednesday is at 10 am, I won't be able to go. [Hint #1: have it at lunchtime, more people might show up.]

Check out their website.

The rally is being held in a far corner of Boston Common. If you don't know the city at all, the location indicated is right next to a major intersection where Beacon and Charles street cross. It's very noisy. It's also the furthest away from the State House and the Park Street MBTA station. [Hint #2: Why not have a rally where the most people might be?]

About the closest thing to that particular corner of the common are a private club and the "Make Way For Ducklings" statues across the way in the Public Garden. It is two blocks from Senator Kerry's house in Louisburg Square, though.
