A WTF Moment for our times.
Author: Raine    Date: 06/03/2010 12:37:23

Good morning. What you are about to read might be one of the greatest WTF moments in American political history:
Dear President Obama and Secretary Salazar:

I am writing to express my grave concerns regarding the severe economic impact of a six-month (or longer) suspension of activity at 33 previously permitted deepwater drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, including and in particular the 22 deepwater drilling rigs currently in operation off the Louisiana coast.

Already, Louisiana has suffered severe negative economic and ecological impacts from the BP oil spill. Our seafood industry is experiencing huge economic losses that have only been partially mitigated by a frustratingly slow and inadequate BP claims process. Moreover, our precious wetlands are suffering incalculable, permanent damages, while our tourism industry faces escalating losses.

During one of the most challenging economic periods in decades, the last thing we need is to enact public policies that will certainly destroy thousands of existing jobs while preventing the creation of thousands more.

The Louisiana Department of Economic Development estimates that the active drilling suspension alone will result in a loss of 3,000 to 6,000 Louisiana jobs in the next 2-3 weeks and potentially over 10,000 Louisiana jobs within a few months. If the suspension of active drilling activity continues for an extended period, LED estimates that our state risks losing more than 20,000 existing and potential new Louisiana jobs in the next 12-18 months.

Obviously these losses would come on top of those already generated by the spill and its related effects. Moreover, the announced moratorium of deepwater drilling activity creates a significant risk that many of these drilling platforms would be relocated to other countries -- along with the hundreds of high-paying jobs that they each create.

Additionally, I fully understand the need for strict oversight of deepwater drilling. However, I would ask that the federal government move quickly to ensure that all deepwater drilling is in proper compliance with federal regulation and is conducted safely so that energy production and more importantly, thousands of jobs, are not in limbo.

Thank you in advance for your swift consideration of this request.
Sincerely,
Governor Bobby Jindal
I'm not sure where to begin with this one.

It was a deepwater drilling rig that exploded and caused this disaster, and Governor Jindal is actually trying to say that the drilling moratorium is causing his state to suffer? If this isn't the perfect example of asking to put out a fire with gasoline, I simply do not know what is. This is a man who seems to have no clue about what to do with this disaster and would rather have the Federal Government continue the same path that brought the gulf to its knees. Between this and what the Former half term Governor of Alaska had to say about this disaster, I don't know what to say about the logic of these people any more.
Radical environmentalists: you are damaging the planet with your efforts to lock up safer drilling areas. There’s nothing clean and green about your misguided, nonsensical radicalism, and Americans are on to you as we question your true motives.

Maybe you can help me out with this one, because I'm really truly confused. They still are the party of 'Drill Baby Drill' even in the face of complete disaster. Instead of trying a new approach they blame and keep going in the same direction-- the wrong one.

It's insane when someone does the same thing over and over and expects a different result. I think we've got a few classic examples right here.

and

Raine

You too? I swear I was having a hard enough time trying to write a blog this morning and when I stumbled across this, it stopped me in my tracks.

Seriously, I am just floored.

Sorry for the mess; help me pick up my brain?

you know I actually had someone on Twitter tell me that the reason the clean up is going so slow is because Obama keeps getting in the way - I think that's when my eye started to twitch

I'm increasingly impressed by all the excuses they have been wheeling out.

Like I said yesterday, they dug from both ends of the English Channel and met in the middle just six inches off; how hard could it be to find the wellhead?

All this robotic stuff is really getting silly. Can't they do better than that?

WHOI, Scripps, IFREMER, the Russkies, and who knows who else all have manned submersibles capable of reaching 5,000 feet down. Where are they in all this?

Don't forget that the Titanic was discovered and then extensively mapped, photgraphed, and explored with 1980s technology at almost 3x the depth....none of the advanced submersibles, ROVs, or any other thing would help here?

BP should be fined at the following rate, retroactive to the first day:

Day 1 - $1

Day 2 - $2

Day 3 - $4

Day 5 - $8

Day 6 - $16

You see where I'm going with this?

Stupid Republicans. Stupid Oil.

Morning all!

Lots of activity on the ROVcam this morning.. looks like they're finished with the secondary cut and are gonna try mounting the new riser pipe today. Hopefully this will allow them to at least not have all that oil leaking into the open water!

Comment by Scoopster on 06/03/2010 14:23:23
Of course, on the other hand now that the pipe is cut off and it's just wide open it's spewing a whole crapload more, for the moment.

OK, two points:

1) When did Dr. Bronner get reincarnated as a half-term Twitwit?

2) Hellen Keller? HELLEN KELLER? This Helen Keller?

A prolific author, Keller was well traveled, and was outspoken in her opposition to war. A member of the Socialist Party USA and the Wobblies, she campaigned for women's suffrage, workers' rights and socialism, as well as many other leftist causes.

I'm sorry I thought I told you - he's grown on me - first I thought its a pretty good impression of David Tennet with a little Christopher Eccelston thrown in - but he's starting to develop his own quirks for the character like standing intimatly close to someone when he's talking

I'm not sure what to think about the blown Perfect Game call.

There's some strong clamoring for the instant-replay rule to be expanded as a result. The replay clearly shows the runner out by a full step....but I'm not sure I want to see baseball go the way of the NFL.

A blown call can make a huge difference in a game like baseball. I can see giving each team 3 replay calls per game - that might keep it from being overused, but would be available for those crucial moments.

Fracking Georgia.

Georgians won’t have to buy health insurance if they don’t want to, according to legislation Gov. Sonny Perdue signed into law today.

The measure, Senate Bill 411, aims to prevent one of the most controversial provisions of federal health reform from taking effect in the state. Perdue said he signed the bill for the same reason he appointed a special attorney general to challenge the constitutionality of health reform.

“It’s regarding what I believe is a violation of constitutional rights, forcing people to purchase things for which I believe they alone are responsible,” he said.

Is it the fact that the games start so late, or that the playoffs are so long?
