Breaking up is hard to do
Author: Raine    Date: 01/31/2008 13:23:40

I am single again. I won't tell you the sad story of how it happened because I myself am still not sure. I have my suspicions, but now is not the time or the place.

As John Edwards suspended his campaign yesterday, I immediately felt a real shift in the political landscape. (ok, it actually felt like someone punched me in the gut. The last time I remember feeling like that was the very last broadcast of *UnFiltered*) I suspect all of us who felt passionately about a candidate have felt this so far, unless you felt that way about our 2 remaining candidates that is.

That means you still have a date to the prom.
I don't. :(

And the MSM pundits felt the shift too. The question of the night was who will Edwards endorse? Where will his supporters go?

Suddenly last night I felt like a prize to be taken instead of earned. There were reasons why I supported John Edwards, it was not just because his speeches inspired me. It wasn't because he was something perceived as different. It wasn't the work he did for the poor and underserved. I supported John Edwards because he supported the causes that I truly care about in this country, and he made them the centerpieces of his campaign. He talked substance. He gave answers and he did not waiver in his convictions.

Now, it's over. And I am being told that Edwards supporters can tilt this election. I have a question for both campaigns... if you want my and other Edwards supporters, what can you do for me, For us? For progressives, for those who want universal healthcare? What will you do for our teachers who need NCLB radically changed? How about the environmentalists who don't want more nukes or more promises of clean coal? For us who really believe that global warming is a critical issue? For us that believe that when you get people out of poverty, you lift your nation up? What will you do for the children and grandchildren of this nation? What about restoring the constitution? Closing Gitmo? Stopping signing statements? How about absolving illegal executive orders? What about giving our children incentives to attend college? And mostly - what will you do to help remove poverty and restore the middle class?

Both Hillary and Barack have promised to make the issue of Poverty more prominent in their campaign. I must say I am skeptical. No one really talked about poverty in this campaign until John Edwards. Change was the first thing Edwards spoke of... now everyone seems to. That is a great thing. it drove the debate to the place that Americans want and NEED it to be.

So the question is there for me, why should I support anyone in the primary? One of these two people will be the nominee. The don't need my money. They have never asked for my support. Their messages and platforms are not what I wanted from a president. How can I support what does not inspire me? This is the primary season right? Don't I still get to have a voice, or will I be told who I must vote for?

I never told Kucinch supporters that their vote didn't count, nor anyone else. No one likes to be told that. I would not want that done to me. I wanted people to feel as tho my candidate earned that thing that is so precious to me as an American, a vote cast.

Tonite will be the first debate without John. It will be interesting to see if they will indeed heed his request. It will be interesting to see how they act with the grownup out of the room.

I can't believe I am single again. I guess for now I will play the field and see what happens. I don't want to date again. I like having a relationship. But for now, I am. Please don't tell me that there is not time for that. The best way to win my vote is to show me that you are my friend. WE will see what happens from their.

Oh, and I'll vote on Tuesday, you bet. I will still vote for John Edwards.

The question remains, who will earn my support come November? Hillary and Barack have some very large shoes to fill. Wherever my dance card goes, it will have to be earned, because I have some damn nice shoes too.

I will see you inside.

:peace: and as always,
Raine

You still have me.

My first choice is Dennis.

Second is Edwards.

Still not sure who speaks for me now.

But I know that anyone with an R after their name will never speak for me.

I'm with you!

Damn Raine,

Your post made me cry this morning - I guess I didn't realize how sleep deprived and discouraged I'd become until yesterday afternoon. I did stop by INDN's List yesterday and tried to learn how to manage their new contributors' database, but my eyes were glazing over, and I'm afraid I might have to go in again and get a refresher course. I just couldn't bring myself to watch the rethuglitards debate last night, each one claiming to be more conservative than the other. I did manage to post a rather feeble entry on my blog last night addressing my latest outrage - dumbya most recent (and may I add UNCONSTITUTIONAL) signing statement, but it doesn't do much more than reproduce an article that I read in the Boston Globe. Although I did include a few links to the law itself and the signing statement. I suppose tonight I'll tune into the Dem debate, but my heart is heavy too. Sometimes the political game is just too ugly for me

I felt last night, so emotionally hungover, and yes, very tired. Today is a new day, and we must keep on keeping on.

I did not go to the Jefferson JAckson rally last nite, and it turns out Obama did not either. I expected Edwards to not be there, of course.

So it seems it was quite a campaign stump for Hillary.

Morning all.

Raine - I am just as sad. I awoke this morning feeling like something was really wrong........... then I remembered.

Oh, among the many other reasons to NOT vote for McCain:

On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live."

Stunning thing for a PRESIDENTAL Candidate to say (outloud anyway).

Good morning everyone.

A lot of us are single here now, aren't we?

I was listening to Laura as I staggered out of bed. I didn't get home until after 2 AM last night. There was a beaut of a train wreck last night because of the problems we had with the Knicks feed which didn't help when the Utah Jazz pulled a cable and knocked us off the air during the last minute of the game.

I want to say something... As I mentioned in my blog, the last time I felt this was was after Unfiltered ended it's brilliant radio run.

I mourned but in return I got so many more things back in return. I am now living with a man I love, who I met becuase of that show, I met TriSec, we had the famous T-shirt tour, I met mala and liv and griump and many others directly from that time... since then I came to know and love the Stephanie Miller Show and , and thru the show, I laugh every morning with new friends as well.

Things do get better. I wold never trade that for the world.

So now we have to keep on the good work, faith is believing in something that you may never see, but believing in it nonetheless.

Hello Liv.

And my router is FUCKED!

It keeps droping the signal on my laptop (I'm sending the vid signal through the TV. One of the many BIG ticket items that Ms. Grump bought that I gave her shit for that I now give her a big for now). But the signal doesn't last more than a few minuets before it drops and I have to restart the router again.

I have returned it twice and it works for a little while and then goes to shit again.

I'm getting sick of this and I'm about to go get a commercial router.

OK, I need some help here as I do my research... As you may know, Ted Kennedy who I generally support was behind the writing of the NCLB bill, which I despise.

I have read that Barack has said in the past that should not be reauthorized but also that it should be substantially reformed, with increased funding.

Where does he stand on this?

And does anyone know where hillary stands, by any chance? I have heard that she would nnot end it, but rahter overhaul it. I am nervous about this very important issue.

This is the real question I ask of people when they say they support someone. I think it is critical that we have a well informed electorate.

VERY critical. Where a candidate stands, and what they have done in the past means something to me. Charisma is wonderful, but hell... A lot of people thought that George Bush had charisma as well.

This is from 2000.

Most of the states up this way, including our fair urban Commonwealth, will allow you to keep an animal you have personally road-killed yourself.

I know Western areas of the state and Southern NH have a 'waiting list' with the local police, just in case some city folk run down something and get squeamish about taking it home; plenty of locals will step up.

Gee, I'm going to have to learn how to dress a deer if I move upcountry, aren't I?

Take from this what you want.

As John Edwards bowed out of his second run for the presidency, questions swirled about his wife, Elizabeth. Her absence from the campaign trail in recent weeks had even her closest friends wondering about her well-being.

But Elizabeth Edwards just has a bad case of the sniffles, a friend said. "My husband and I went to South Carolina for the primary there," said Sally Plyler, a friend from Raleigh, N.C. "I called her before I went and after I came back. She said she just had a bad cold."

Ellan Maynard, another longtime friend, said Elizabeth Edwards had a recent checkup and said "it was all good."

I do not know what to take from this. I do know that she had previously taken a three week hiatus from the campaign. She was slated to return the day he suspended his campaign.

ISsues are what count. WE have come too far to vote for skin coulour or gender. I will take a democratic Vote. I want our new voters to be be more informed. I want them to vote becuase in order t have good race relations, or good woman's rights relations, we need people to be informed.

It's one thing to point out the BS coming from the right but there seems to be in some circles a dismissive attitude towards anyone who says that Hillary might not be that progressive by citing her votes especially when it comes to the war or any DLC-related propositions that she has supported. One of the bloggers pointed out that Rachel doesn't criticize Hillary if she's doing a show with Mark Green and David Bender. Then again this may be an extension of the old criticisms from when AAR started that it would be just a mouthpiece of the Democratic Party.

The scary part of the Supreme Court is that one of the few near liberals left John Paul Stevens is almost 90 while the more right-wing members of the court (Thomas, Roberts, Alito) are in their 40's and 50's. That's why we need a President who will reverse the right-ward drift of the court.

It looks like they were going to spoon. All they need is Lieberman and they can have a three-way.

Condi would be a good sell for many.

Comment by livingonli on 01/31/2008 19:48:29
Don't forget KO fans, tonight there are TWO Countdowns. The regular 8 PM and Midnight one which will include a special comment on FISA and the Telcoms. And then he will do a post democratic debate edition at 10 PM. Make a note or set your VCR or DVR to record it as back-up.

What does it say that MSNBC has Keith on after a Democratic debate but they gave Tweety the slot after the Republican debate?

But what about Condi's ties to Bush, the neo-cons and the war? Won't she be tainted by that association? And even with the neo-con credentials how many of the hard core racist republcians who probably think McCain is too liberal would ever vote for a woman of color?

You know what, bring it on.

Comment by velveeta jones on 01/31/2008 19:58:07
Liv, I agree, we need to keep the pressure on that McCain will keep us in war, that he is this [] close to senility and that (see below) he's just another gw bush lover.

Since McCain is praising Bush's war, Condi seems like a perfect fit. On top of that, the neanderthals that won't vote for Obama or Clinton because they're a black/woman would be faced with having to select a black woman on the other ticket. They'd probably stay home, assuring a Democratic victory.

Heya gang,

I'm home after leaving work early - massive headache, head cold, and plain old exhaustion, just up out of bed. I couldn't watch the numb-nut rethuglitards last night, but do hope to watch the Dems tonight, will anybody else be blogging on 4Fs tonight? I am waiting to see/hear how the last two standing will address John Edwards' issues and I'm still waiting to hear something/anything about how they will address Native issues. Vamos a ver....
