Happy End of the World!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 01/01/2012 16:06:46

I mean..... New Year 2012!

From Wikipedia which is always accurate:
2012 date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. Scenarios for the end of the world include the arrival of the next solar maximum, or Earth's collision with a black hole, passing asteroid or a planet called "Nibiru".

Oh okay.... that entry has been edited by me to omit certain possible disclaimers or opinions or superstitions.

But to be honest, the end of the world has already come for many in the world; mostly for women and children who are born into, or forced into, slavery. And as the mother of a young girl it scares me to death!

Recently this article in the NYT made me want to raise money to rent several thousand large aircraft to airlift all females out of Somalia:

Somalia has been steadily worn down by decades of conflict and chaos, its cities in ruins and its people starving. Just this year, tens of thousands have died from famine, with countless others cut down in relentless combat. Now Somalis face yet another widespread terror: an alarming increase in rapes and sexual abuse of women and girls.

The Shabab militant group, which presents itself as a morally righteous rebel force and the defender of pure Islam, is seizing women and girls as spoils of war, gang-raping and abusing them as part of its reign of terror in southern Somalia, according to victims, aid workers and United Nations officials. Short of cash and losing ground, the militants are also forcing families to hand over girls for arranged marriages that often last no more than a few weeks and are essentially sexual slavery, a cheap way to bolster their ranks’ flagging morale.

But it is not just the Shabab. In the past few months, aid workers and victims say, there has been a free-for-all of armed men preying upon women and girls displaced by Somalia’s famine, who often trek hundreds of miles searching for food and end up in crowded, lawless refugee camps where Islamist militants, rogue militiamen and even government soldiers rape, rob and kill with impunity.

There are a few good people who want to help these women, this is one of the organizations. Click here to donate money or to simply write letters of support to women who have been abused.

This will be my 2012 "cause" and I intend to get my daughter involved. Slavery and rape of women and children should not be happening in this world.... EVER. It'll take many voices screaming loudly to get it to end. Join me in screaming won't you?

Vel, I'm glad that you mentioned this terrible situation. Sadly, it is a terrible and oft unmentioned problem right here in the united states.

I know that the subject of your blog is quite serious, but I wanted to tell you, I love being able to read these words (bold face mine):

Happy new year to Momma Vel and Momma Azalea.

Good day everyone. I'm just amazed that I am awake.

I imagine that somewhere in humankind's deep dark past, this sort of thing was a lot more commonplace than it is now. As we have become more enlightened through the centuries, our respect for - and empathy of - our fellow humans has grown. As such, we "know" (or recognize) the equality among us all and treat others accordingly.

That's why it's ever more horrific to know there are pockets out there on the planet that still live in the dark ages.

We can use force and money to put a stop to it, but it will require education and commitment to stamp it out.

A new stream to add to my listen list. Interesting that they have a number of internet-only shows like Nicole Sandler and Sam Seder's shows and even Left Jab and Edge of Sports which are Sirius XM shows. At least if I lived in DC, I could flip between the two in the car to catch my shows since Sirius XM doesn't air the first hour of Steph or Thom live. Especially with Green 960 being blown up by crap Channel.

Our station won't be airing the last hour of Steph, which is strange.

I think it might be to such a packed schedule. That they have Steph at all is very impressive.

The Jets are done and hopefully so is Rex Ryan's mouth. Then again, I am just waiting for the Giants-Cowboys now.

Rex RyaN IS REALLY A DOUCHKNOB.

I got to read the Daily news the day after the Giants win against the Jets. I wasn;t aware of how much trash talking he did to the lead up the that game. (made me REALLY miss the NY daily)

Now I am hella nervous. This game is the end of the line for one of the teams. I hope it's the cowboys.

Happy New Year, friends!!

Velveeta, thank you for raising this issue. Let us take a stand and try to make sure that in 2012, we move closer to a more just world. It is past time for humanity to reject seeing others as objects and spoils of war. Let us try to build better communities here and abroad. We, as individuals, communities, nations, and a species, must not underestimate our potential for goodness and for greatness,

Nice to see the Giants stick a fork in the Cowboys
