SNAP
Author: Raine    Date: 01/23/2012 15:21:32

Among the things that happened this weekend was a primary. Our Velveeta posted about it yesterday morning. I don't think it was as snarky as she intended. Newt is a really rotten guy.

We know about his wives, we know about his getting drummed out of the position of Speaker of the House. We know he shut down the Government because he didn't get a good seat on Air force one. We know he has a strange fascination with that Saul Alinski guy.

We know a lot about Newt. Today, I would like to take a look at just one of the many things he's actually saying. On the campaign speeches and in debates, he's said the following:
"Over here you have a policy which, with Reagan and me as speaker, created millions of jobs — it's called paychecks. Over here you have the most successful food stamp president in American history, Barack Obama,".
Is that Racist? I would argue with a very refined debate strategy of HELL YES. For me, and for others, there is no debate to be had here. It's damn racist. It's hateful. It's more than a small shame that in this day and age it needs to be explained to people WHY it's racist. I don't have the stomach to explain it myself today. I will let Congressperson Clyburn speak for me when he says:
South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, who is black, says it is no longer the "welfare queen," a line oft-touted by Ronald Reagan, but "king of the food stamps."

"I guess a lot of people see it as, if Ronald Reagan can do it and be so lionized by conservatives, then I ought to be able to do it," says Clyburn, the third ranking Democrat in the House.

Clyburn says it's an old strategy: candidates using race as a wedge to get votes.
Let's stop for a moment and get beyond the obvious racism of all of this. Let's take a good look at what Gingrich is NOT talking about. Let's talk food stamps. For many people, it's known as SNAP and it's short for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) is the nation's most important anti-hunger program. In 2011, it helped almost 45 million low-income Americans to afford a nutritionally adequate diet in a typical month.

Nearly 75 percent of SNAP participants are in families with children; more than one-quarter of participants are in households with seniors or people with disabilities.

After unemployment insurance, SNAP is the most responsive federal program providing additional assistance during economic downturns. It also is an important nutritional support for low-wage working families and low-income seniors and people with disabilities with fixed incomes.

The federal government pays the full cost of SNAP benefits and splits the cost of administering the program with the states, which operate the program.
Let's take a look at a few of Newt's food stamp facts, which are -- frankly-- bullshit.
But Gingrich goes too far to say Obama has put more on the rolls than other presidents. We asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition service for month-by-month figures going back to January 2001. And they show that under President George W. Bush the number of recipients rose by nearly 14.7 million. Nothing before comes close to that.

And under Obama, the increase so far has been 14.2 million. To be exact, the program has so far grown by 444,574 fewer recipients during Obama's time in office than during Bush's.
Not that any of this should matter, to be quite honest. That said, it's because of people like Newt that it still matters.

As stated above, SNAP is a social safety net for people who need it during times of financial struggles. Here are a few facts that Newt- and those that voted for or are supporting him don't seem to understand:
1) A large and growing share of SNAP households are working households
2) SNAP responded quickly and effectively to the recession.
3) Today’s large SNAP caseloads mostly reflect the extraordinarily deep and prolonged recession
4) SNAP has one of the most rigorous quality control systems of any public benefit program
5) SNAP’s recent growth is temporary.

Save that link. Mostly for this chart:
http://www.cbpp.org/images/cms//WorkingHouseholds.jpg

I would like to see a country where we no longer have a need for such a program. Until then, I am glad that we have programs like this that give a hand to those that are in need. Newt, in his attack on the president also attacked the very people he claims he wants to represent-- Americans. These are the very same Americans who are still struggling to recover from a tattered economy left upon all of us by his fellow Republican, the man who was in the office before President Obama.

This isn't about Bush -- this is about a man who claims to have gotten forgiveness from his God while shitting upon the neediest among us. To add insult to injury -- he made it racist. He's a wretched horrible man. Forget his affairs for a minute. Forget his FBI investigation and his ethics --or lack thereof. Forget that while he is on his third wife, he's also on his third religion. (For those wondering, Lutheran, Southern Baptist and now, Catholicism.) What I find most horrible is his lack of caring for his fellow Americans. A Person who wants to be president should NEVER show such utter contempt and vile towards the people he wants to represent. Even George Bush (the first AND the second) understood that. Newt puts a stake in the heart of compassionate conservatism.

I don't care what percentage of white people use SNAP as opposed to people of color. We have all heard those statistics. That isn't the point for me. The point is we have people running for the Office of the President of the United States showing utter disdain for people in need in our country. I wish more people would see what I am seeing here. I have long said that ONE of these people would eventually win the GOP nomination. That Newt Gingrich is considered a frontrunner right now is unbelievable. 15 years ago he was kicked out of his speakers position under a very serious ethics violation. Today he's being embraced by the GOP electorate. That's stunning. He hasn't changed, he is exactly who he has always been and here he is -- leading the pack.

There are seven words to describe this man: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.

None among us is innocent from having committed one or more of these sins at one time or another. Newt appears to receive great pleasure from them. Arguably -- profit as well. He's walking proof that not all sins are deadly -- but when one lives a life that embraces those seven things -- it makes a person rotten. It's apparent when he talks about his disdain for people in need.

SNAP.

Raine

Greetings, comrades!

Interesting that one game almost went into overtime and the other one did...seems like the teams were very evenly matched all around.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country is saying "New York and Boston AGAIN???"

With the Stuporbowl in Indianapolis, that's enemy territory for the Pats....I'd have to give home-field to the Giants, even if it is a "neutral site". Early line is Pats by 3, but that's rather meaningless.

I was tangling with my Conservative friends last night...they didn't agree, but I think that if Newt wins the nomination, he could save time at the convention and have a combination acceptance/concession speech.

He is so mean and nasty, I honestly can't see much of the GOP uniting behind him; he will attract the far right and the loonies, but I think the more reasonable types will either hold their noses or just stay home and not vote.

And for the record...it's coming up on my third anniversary of getting laid off from Athena; we've been on and off of SNAP twice in that timespan. I've worked three concurrent jobs during that time and it still wasn't enough. Support programs are there for a reason; it was a lifesaver in a time of need. But Bush put me there, not Obama. Didn't he expand the program in an effort to help more people?

Of course, we could have lost our apartment and lived under a bridge until we died, and thus decrease the surplus population. But I'm rather glad this didn't happen.

Tri, I wrote part of this with you in mind. I know that SNAP was a great help for you (and many friends) during rough spots. Bob and I were a few weeks from applying for it ourselves.

Yes, SNAP was expanded under Bush -- I should have made that more clear in the post. The idea that programs such as SNAP are there for a cushy couch is total bullshit. It doesn't make life great -- it helps people and families survive. Literally.

Maybe I should re-clarify -- More people needed SNAP under Bush than Obama. I believe that the criteria for applying was made easier under the current administration.

Pretty big news from SCOTUS.
The Supreme Court says police must get a search warrant before using GPS technology to track criminal suspects.

The court ruled in the case of Washington, D.C., nightclub owner Antoine Jones. A federal appeals court in Washington overturned his drug conspiracy conviction because police did not have a warrant when they installed a GPS device on his vehicle and then tracked his movements for a month.

YAY for the 4th amendment!

Does anyone know where I can find out who is on the ballot for each state?

For example, I know that only Mitt and Paul are on the ballot here in Virginia.

How can I verify all the candidates on the state's ballots?

Any takers?

Raine, thanks for an excellent blog.

Instead of defending the cause of the widow and the orphan, Newt Gingrich has decided to make poverty seem like a crime and fall back on racist stereotypes. He is a hateful man, who may end up doing a great deal of harm to the party that he professes to love. However, harming what he says he loves seems to be a habit for the former Speaker of the House.

BTW, I got my ticket for Palm Beach this past weekend; I'm headed down for a couple of days in May and will help my aunt drive a car back up the coast.

I probably won't have time for any Limbaugh or Coulter hunting though; I seriously doubt we'll even get onto Palm Beach proper.

As an aside, I wonder what TSA would think if I printed the South Florida sectional and the approach plates for PBI and had that in my carry-on?

He's on a team building business trip.
He's in a log cabin. (A nice one, mind you... but it is a log cabin)
He's has no car.
It's the middle of winter, in (-- did I tell you?) THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS.
Most people are sharing rooms in the cabin.
Last night they had a team building event. This is what happened.
