The High Cost of Doing Nothing
Author: BobR    Date: 07/20/2012 12:53:33

Despite "conserve" being the root word of "conservative", Republicans have decided that conserving natural resources is a liberal ideal and are therefore against it. They claim there is a "liberal agenda", and that "we" want to take away Americans' right to drive gas guzzling cars and dump millions of tons of CO2 into the air. If them thar socialist countries in Europe are trying to cut down on emissions, then - by God - doing so here would be anti-American, to hear them tell it.

So they claim our desire to change the status quo is really just to force an ideology on all Americans. But what is their motivation for maintaining the status quo? They hide behind vague claims of "freedom" and "America" and probably apple pie and Chevrolet. The real reason, of course, is much simpler than that:

Money.

Oil companies make a LOT of money. They make record profits every year, while still enjoying subsidies (or if you prefer - tax breaks for practically everything). They'd like to keep it that way. Republicans like the largesse they receive in campaign donations and other support from oil companies and their lobbyists. So oil companies run ads about how they're "researching" cleaner fuels, and Republican politicians scream about how energy prices will go up if the Democrats get their way. They say solar and wind is "too expensive", and low-information voters look at the dust and cobwebs in their wallets and decide that they'd rather believe global warming is a hoax (or at least inevitable).

It is a classic case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

I wrote a couple weeks ago about the severe weather we've been having and how it was predicted by climate scientists as a result of climate change. The climate change is a result of global warming. I wrote about the record-breaking heat waves, and the wildfires out west and the drought and rising sea levels on the coasts.

These changes all result in increased costs for us as consumers. We pay higher electric bills because we're running the A/C more and longer (or we're experiencing a decreased standard of living, suffering with the heat and/or not doing what we'd like). With more and more weather-related disasters, there's the cost of emergency response. There's the cost in life, especially the firefighters out west battling epic forest fires. Those living on the coast will see their properties literally disappear into the sea, losing millions in real estate investments.

The drought is already having an effect on our food supply. Crops are failing on a Biblical level across the country. We are on the brink of heading into another dust bowl. Corn prices are shooting through the roof, which also means that meat prices will rise (since most cattle are "grain fed" on corn). The misguided attempt to make gasoline "cleaner" by adding 10% ethanol made from corn will mean those prices will rise too. "Expensive" energy is an abstract notion, but higher prices at the grocery store is a very visceral reality. We WILL be seeing this over the next 3-12 months.

There are lots of questions that float around the global warming / climate change debate: Is it man-made? Is it avoidable? Is it too late to do anything?

These questions are moot, for the most part. The real question is: Do you want to pay up front to try address the problem, or do you want to pay after the fact to address the results of the problem?

We're going to pay either way. I feel it's best to make the investment now and stem the greenhouse emissions and hope the planet will adjust itself back. Otherwise, we'll be paying for our procrastination for generations to come.

Morning, comrades!

With more hours to kill, I've been repeatedly plunging daggers into my eyes and slitting my own wrists by sitting through some of the required online training offerings put out by the BSA. They're designed for the rank amateur, so this 30-year veteran finds them tedious and unnecessary, but since I don't have the certificates, they must be done. I also note that in none of the training I've completed over the past two years is there anything requiring us to inquire about sexual orientation of leaders, or hunting down and expelling said unworthy subhumans.

Anyway...

Mornin' all & Happy Fridee!!

So last night I was heading home from the card shop, and my ankle was really sore (I twisted it walking in the sand on BI the day before). So I called up my old reliable pal - The Wingnut Cabbie! Seriously, he's a great guy and very reliable and doesn't charge too much.. but DAMN is he ever an absolute teabaggin' nut job when it comes to anything political.

So anyways, here's his latest thing: Obama incited bloody revolution all around the world, especially in the Middle East. How? By giving this speech in Cairo in 2009. Oh yeah, and now he's begging Vladimir Putin to 'clean up the mess Obama created'.

I can't get over the report of a 6-year-old being in the middle of it.

At a midnight show of a PG-13 film? Obviously, somebody wasn't screened for appropriate parenting skills...

I just figure its summer and to me this would be a kind treat event. I would question parenting skills if this were the school year

A San Diego woman identifying herself as Holmes's mother spoke briefly with ABC News. She had not been contacted by authorities, but when she first heard the news, she immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said, speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police. I need to fly out to Colorado."
Woah.

oh yeah they worry about their image, but they don't care about actual gun safety or education - they don't work to help get guns out of the hands of not only people like this crazy person but also criminals. They only want to protect the ability to get an effing ak47 or whatever mass killing weapon there is under the pretense of "hunting"

Comment by BobR on 07/20/2012 14:04:58

This seems like a puff piece for the Mormons. I remember them coming into town by the busload every summer. A couple years, we even loaned (or rented) out a bedroom for a couple guys to stay with us. It was a mixed blessing for the town, in that it brought in money, but they also cleaned out the grocery of milk and juice, and created traffic problems.

I don't remember any anti-Mormon sentiment or protesting when we went to the see the pageant, but I was young, and it was this big splashy thing that made no sense to me. It was just something we did one summer evening as a "cultural experience".

Things have changed a bit since I moved away. I know that Mormons are buying up property (both residential and business) which likely has the locals somewhat concerned. They may be using religion as a weapon, but their fears are more likely based in economics and culture.

I doubt it, though I suspect if someone goes to the theatre and asks for one they'll get it. Warner Bros has cancelled the red carpet premiere in Paris and issued a statement "Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."

I woke up a little while ago to hear about this tragedy.

It is still early, we do not know all the details. I mourn for the dead and pray that the wounded will be healed. May those who mourn be comforted in this time of sorrow.

Dear God.
Police say that the apartment of the suspect in an early morning theater shooting appears to be booby trapped.

Police Chief Dan Oates said the explosive devices were "pretty sophisticated."
"We could be here for days," he said.

Five buildings have been evacuated.

Jim Yacone, special agent in charge of the Denver FBI, said they were working on "how to disarm the flammable or explosive material."

Read the whole thing:
The search began about 2 a.m. A resident of the building who didn't want to give his name said he answered his door to see police with assault rifles. An officer asked if he had seen a white guy with crazy hair, possibly dyed unnatural colors, the man said. It was unclear if the officer was referring to the suspect.

I am watching MSNBC as I do housework. I am very afraid for the police officers and other people at the apartment complexes.

We will have to see how this story unfolds, but it seems that we may have someone who is very violent and very methodical at the root of this story. (The suspect is innocent until proven guilty, but I find the details of this story more disturbing as I learn more.)

Let us pause and keep the victims in our thoughts and prayers. They and their families, not the alleged perpetrator, should be our focus. Today, many people are dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy, and we it owe to them and the victims to offer our emotional support. May those who are injured heal, and may the memory of those who died be a blessing for those dearest to them. In the face of such hate, we can offer love and community to those who are facing this tragedy.

The reality is that for all the "conceal carry" and "didn't anyone else have a gun" blather, the reality is shooting a gun is WAY different than being shot AT by a gun, as is shooting at a real person as opposed to a paper target. I think most gun-toting people in that situation would be diving under the seats, not turning into Dirty Harry.

Comment by TriSec on 07/20/2012 16:23:35
You know, I have actually been shot at once in my life. Completely unintentionally, whilst at Scout camp.

A camp I once attended had a network of hiking trails all over the place...including two that went dangerously close to the shotgun range...without any warning signs or trail markers of any sort.

I was out for a walk, and I heard buckshot go whistling through the trees about 20 feet over my head. It was more a deer-in-the-headlights moment, as my brain went "What the hell was that?" as the rest of me was going "RUN!!!"

Finally, the range director saw me through the woods and called cease-fire, and I got the hell out of there.

I can go auto-pilot when confronted by a traumatic injury, primarily because I have the training to do so. The vast majority of the population out there that would be carrying a piece have NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER. The fight or flight defence mechanism is very powerful, but it can be overcome, again with the proper training.

Perhaps if an off-duty policeman, or a Marine or Soldier was in the theater, they might have had a chance. The general population....sorry, NO.
