The High Cost of Doing Nothing
Author: BobR    Date: 07/20/2012 12:53:33

Despite "conserve" being the root word of "conservative", Republicans have decided that conserving natural resources is a liberal ideal and are therefore against it. They claim there is a "liberal agenda", and that "we" want to take away Americans' right to drive gas guzzling cars and dump millions of tons of CO2 into the air. If them thar socialist countries in Europe are trying to cut down on emissions, then - by God - doing so here would be anti-American, to hear them tell it.

So they claim our desire to change the status quo is really just to force an ideology on all Americans. But what is their motivation for maintaining the status quo? They hide behind vague claims of "freedom" and "America" and probably apple pie and Chevrolet. The real reason, of course, is much simpler than that:

Money.

Oil companies make a LOT of money. They make record profits every year, while still enjoying subsidies (or if you prefer - tax breaks for practically everything). They'd like to keep it that way. Republicans like the largesse they receive in campaign donations and other support from oil companies and their lobbyists. So oil companies run ads about how they're "researching" cleaner fuels, and Republican politicians scream about how energy prices will go up if the Democrats get their way. They say solar and wind is "too expensive", and low-information voters look at the dust and cobwebs in their wallets and decide that they'd rather believe global warming is a hoax (or at least inevitable).

It is a classic case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

I wrote a couple weeks ago about the severe weather we've been having and how it was predicted by climate scientists as a result of climate change. The climate change is a result of global warming. I wrote about the record-breaking heat waves, and the wildfires out west and the drought and rising sea levels on the coasts.

These changes all result in increased costs for us as consumers. We pay higher electric bills because we're running the A/C more and longer (or we're experiencing a decreased standard of living, suffering with the heat and/or not doing what we'd like). With more and more weather-related disasters, there's the cost of emergency response. There's the cost in life, especially the firefighters out west battling epic forest fires. Those living on the coast will see their properties literally disappear into the sea, losing millions in real estate investments.

The drought is already having an effect on our food supply. Crops are failing on a Biblical level across the country. We are on the brink of heading into another dust bowl. Corn prices are shooting through the roof, which also means that meat prices will rise (since most cattle are "grain fed" on corn). The misguided attempt to make gasoline "cleaner" by adding 10% ethanol made from corn will mean those prices will rise too. "Expensive" energy is an abstract notion, but higher prices at the grocery store is a very visceral reality. We WILL be seeing this over the next 3-12 months.

There are lots of questions that float around the global warming / climate change debate: Is it man-made? Is it avoidable? Is it too late to do anything?

These questions are moot, for the most part. The real question is: Do you want to pay up front to try address the problem, or do you want to pay after the fact to address the results of the problem?

We're going to pay either way. I feel it's best to make the investment now and stem the greenhouse emissions and hope the planet will adjust itself back. Otherwise, we'll be paying for our procrastination for generations to come.

Morning, comrades!

With more hours to kill, I've been repeatedly plunging daggers into my eyes and slitting my own wrists by sitting through some of the required online training offerings put out by the BSA. They're designed for the rank amateur, so this 30-year veteran finds them tedious and unnecessary, but since I don't have the certificates, they must be done. I also note that in none of the training I've completed over the past two years is there anything requiring us to inquire about sexual orientation of leaders, or hunting down and expelling said unworthy subhumans.

Anyway...

Mornin' all & Happy Fridee!!

So last night I was heading home from the card shop, and my ankle was really sore (I twisted it walking in the sand on BI the day before). So I called up my old reliable pal - The Wingnut Cabbie! Seriously, he's a great guy and very reliable and doesn't charge too much.. but DAMN is he ever an absolute teabaggin' nut job when it comes to anything political.

So anyways, here's his latest thing: Obama incited bloody revolution all around the world, especially in the Middle East. How? By giving this speech in Cairo in 2009. Oh yeah, and now he's begging Vladimir Putin to 'clean up the mess Obama created'.

I can't get over the report of a 6-year-old being in the middle of it.

At a midnight show of a PG-13 film? Obviously, somebody wasn't screened for appropriate parenting skills...

A San Diego woman identifying herself as Holmes's mother spoke briefly with ABC News. She had not been contacted by authorities, but when she first heard the news, she immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said, speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police. I need to fly out to Colorado."

oh yeah they worry about their image, but they don't care about actual gun safety or education - they don't work to help get guns out of the hands of not only people like this crazy person but also criminals. They only want to protect the ability to get an effing ak47 or whatever mass killing weapon there is under the pretense of "hunting"

Comment by BobR on 07/20/2012 14:04:58

This seems like a puff piece for the Mormons. I remember them coming into town by the busload every summer. A couple years, we even loaned (or rented) out a bedroom for a couple guys to stay with us. It was a mixed blessing for the town, in that it brought in money, but they also cleaned out the grocery of milk and juice, and created traffic problems.

I don't remember any anti-Mormon sentiment or protesting when we went to the see the pageant, but I was young, and it was this big splashy thing that made no sense to me. It was just something we did one summer evening as a "cultural experience".

Things have changed a bit since I moved away. I know that Mormons are buying up property (both residential and business) which likely has the locals somewhat concerned. They may be using religion as a weapon, but their fears are more likely based in economics and culture.

I doubt it, though I suspect if someone goes to the theatre and asks for one they'll get it. Warner Bros has cancelled the red carpet premiere in Paris and issued a statement "Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."

Police say that the apartment of the suspect in an early morning theater shooting appears to be booby trapped.

Police Chief Dan Oates said the explosive devices were "pretty sophisticated."
"We could be here for days," he said.

Five buildings have been evacuated.

Jim Yacone, special agent in charge of the Denver FBI, said they were working on "how to disarm the flammable or explosive material."

Read the whole thing:
The search began about 2 a.m. A resident of the building who didn't want to give his name said he answered his door to see police with assault rifles. An officer asked if he had seen a white guy with crazy hair, possibly dyed unnatural colors, the man said. It was unclear if the officer was referring to the suspect.

I am watching MSNBC as I do housework. I am very afraid for the police officers and other people at the apartment complexes.

We will have to see how this story unfolds, but it seems that we may have someone who is very violent and very methodical at the root of this story. (The suspect is innocent until proven guilty, but I find the details of this story more disturbing as I learn more.)

Let us pause and keep the victims in our thoughts and prayers. They and their families, not the alleged perpetrator, should be our focus. Today, many people are dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy, and we it owe to them and the victims to offer our emotional support. May those who are injured heal, and may the memory of those who died be a blessing for those dearest to them. In the face of such hate, we can offer love and community to those who are facing this tragedy.

I think most gun-toting people in that situation would be diving under the seats, not turning into Dirty Harry.

Comment by TriSec on 07/20/2012 16:23:35
You know, I have actually been shot at once in my life. Completely unintentionally, whilst at Scout camp.

A camp I once attended had a network of hiking trails all over the place...including two that went dangerously close to the shotgun range...without any warning signs or trail markers of any sort.

I was out for a walk, and I heard buckshot go whistling through the trees about 20 feet over my head. It was more a deer-in-the-headlights moment, as my brain went "What the hell was that?" as the rest of me was going "RUN!!!"

Finally, the range director saw me through the woods and called cease-fire, and I got the hell out of there.

I can go auto-pilot when confronted by a traumatic injury, primarily because I have the training to do so. The vast majority of the population out there that would be carrying a piece have NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER. The fight or flight defence mechanism is very powerful, but it can be overcome, again with the proper training.

Perhaps if an off-duty policeman, or a Marine or Soldier was in the theater, they might have had a chance. The general population....sorry, NO.

Morning, afternoon, whatever...

I woke up to this news a few minutes ago. And frankly I am completely numb. Most of it is sorrow for the victims and their families, but I also have the distinct fear that this is going to be turned into a political football. It seems almost inevitable, and in my mind it's far too early to go on the offensive as to whether the Second Amendment should be repealed or if people should be required to carry weapons into movie theaters in case something like this happens again.

I just want to let the families of the dead take their loved ones to their final resting place, let the wounded get the treatment they need, and find out what the hell happened in this guy's life to make him go off the rails. I'll be angry later. Right now, I just need to mourn.

Jack Rice, a former CIA officer and prosecutor who is filling in today on the Ed Schultz Show, just interviewed a man named Christopher Jones, who was at the theater. This moving and sad interview was followed by a caller from Wisconsin who blamed LIBERALS for not allowing everyone to be armed in the theater to defend themselves. Mister Rice pointed out that people would be firing in the dark through the smoke from the tear gas. Yet the caller insisted that people should have been armed. Rice pointed out that he has fired perhaps every make of gun known to man and that firing in the theater would lead to a further tragedy. The caller would have none of it.

It is disgusting to politicize this tragedy. I don't think anyone short of a well trained member of the military or police officer could have prevented that tragedy. At the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, people there stopped someone who was going to open fire after the person who shot Giffords and several others was grappled to the ground.

I'm glad I'm not the only who just heard that. Hate to break it to that idiot to CO allows for permitted conceal carry of loaded weapons. He just doesn't like that he got to get an effin permit.

from the blog I wrote on firearms

With all the laws these days about how you can carry guns into national parks, bars, churches, and pretty much anywhere, as a non-gun owner I don’t really feel very safe from all these gun-toting people. Gun rights people often say that if more people could carry guns anywhere they want we’d be safer. But I don’t know who you are and what gun training you’ve had, or hadn’t. Why should I trust you with a gun in public?

Romney is bringing religion into his statement.

Sorry guys, give me Obama any day --

his religion or religion in general?

He spoke of a living god....

He quoted Scripture -- I am going to find the statement,

I the meantime, this is what POTUS said:
‎"If there’s anything to take away from this tragedy it’s the reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it’s not the trivial things, which so often consume us and our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."

— President Barack Obama

I am not sure what verse Romney quoted but I hope that it is one that was meant to offer comfort. I think that faith can be an important part of someone's life, but I don't think appeals to any particular faith are appropriate in this tragedy. Tonight, I am sure, my congregation will pray for the dead and the wounded in this tragedy. I will try to watch Romney's statement later, but I think that Obama was eloquent in addressing the events in Aurora, Colorado.

In other news (and Scoopster should be happy), DirecTV and Viacom finally settled today on Day 10 of the dispute and the channels have been re-instated. And of course, AMC Networks remain off Dish because they are not even talking with them.

I pulled up Wikipedia for July 20th. There has been a lot of tragic stuff that happened on this date in history:

70 – First Jewish–Roman War: Siege of Jerusalem – Titus, son of emperor Vespasian, storms the Fortress of Antonia north of the Temple Mount. The Roman army is drawn into street fights with the Zealots.

1932 – In Washington, D.C., police fire tear gas on World War I veterans, part of the Bonus Expeditionary Force, who attempt to march to the White House.

1934 – Labor unrest in the U.S.: as police in Minneapolis fire upon striking truck drivers, during the Minneapolis Teamsters Strike of 1934, killing two and wounding sixty-seven

1934 West Coast waterfront strike: In Seattle, Washington, police fire tear gas on and club 2,000 striking longshoremen. The governor of Oregon calls out the National Guard to break a strike on the Portland docks.

And then there is this:

1969 – Apollo program: Apollo 11 successfully makes the first manned landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to walk on the Moon almost 7 hours later. (US Time)

I'm gonna reflect on that.

The Colorado Tea Party Patriots and the Tea Party Patriots are saddened to hear of the death and wounding of theater goers in Aurora, Colorado. The member of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots, Jim Holmes, age 52 is not the same person who has been identified as the shooter.

The attempts of some media organizations to characterize the shooter as a Tea Party member without having made any effort to contact our organization are shameless and reprehensible.

I have to tell them that The Dark Knight Returns which that page is from came out in 1986 although the trade paperback has had numerous republications (just like the one for the Watchmen). Both Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen when they were published set the standard to establish to people why comic books weren't for little kids anymore

Nicole Sandler is in for Randi Rhodes, and began the hour playing this song from 1997:

Here are the lyrics;

If It Were Up to Me
Words and Lyrics by:
Cheryl Wheeler

Maybe it's the movies, maybe it's the books
Maybe it's the bullets, maybe it's the real crooks
Maybe it's the drugs, maybe it's the parents
Maybe it's the colors everybody's wearin
Maybe it's the President, maybe it's the last one
Maybe it's the one before that, what he done
Maybe it's the high schools, maybe it's the teachers
Maybe it's the tattooed children in the bleachers
Maybe it's the Bible, maybe it's the lack
Maybe it's the music, maybe it's the crack
Maybe it's the hairdos, maybe it's the TV
Maybe it's the cigarettes, maybe it's the family
Maybe it's the fast food, maybe it's the news
Maybe it's divorce, maybe it's abuse
Maybe it's the lawyers, maybe it's the prisons
Maybe it's the Senators, maybe it's the system
Maybe it's the fathers, maybe it's the sons
Maybe it's the sisters, maybe it's the moms
Maybe it's the radio, maybe it's road rage
Maybe El Nino, or UV rays
Maybe it's the army, maybe it's the liquor
Maybe it's the papers, maybe the militia
Maybe it's the athletes, maybe it's the ads
Maybe it's the sports fans, maybe it's a fad
Maybe it's the magazines, maybe it's the internet
Maybe it's the lottery, maybe it's the immigrants
Maybe it's taxes, big business
Maybe it's the KKK and the skinheads
Maybe it's the communists, maybe it's the Catholics
Maybe it's the hippies, maybe it's the addicts
Maybe it's the art, maybe it's the sex
Maybe it's the homeless, maybe it's the banks
Maybe it's the clearcut, maybe it's the ozone
Maybe it's the chemicals, maybe it's the car phones
Maybe it's the fertilizer, maybe it's the nose rings
Maybe it's the end, but I know one thing.
If it were up to me, I'd take away the guns.

I remember the ones from the 80's. I also understand that we know little -- I still thought this was curious. This was from Reuters and it was published as a strange coincidence.

Dark Knight Returns was published in 1986 and the sequel The Dark Knight Strikes Again came out in 2001. Both books are considered an alternate continuity where a middle-aged Bruce Wayne came out of retirement to put back on the cape and cowl.

If this is true, this is why we need training for gun owners -- and someone in the process to check on such issues as mental health. We need sane gun regulation, not bans nor laws so open that anyone can get a gun without a background check.

Well, the middle one was taken with a Fujifilm FinePix 1500 point-n-shoot. The other two I took with a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I picked up the Canon on eBay a couple of months ago and have been going to town ever since. :)
