Romney/Ryan: Channeling the inner McCain
Author: Raine    Date: 09/17/2012 15:16:48

Flashback, 2008:
"Look, I know the area, I've been there, I know wars, I know how to win wars, and I know how to improve our capabilities so that we will capture Osama bin Laden -- or put it this way, bring him to justice... We will do it, I know how to do it."
That was then Presidential Candidate, John McCain. Problem was - he wouldn't tell anyone what his plan was, not even the Bush Administration. The Wall Street Journal was questioning this months before this statement:
“One thing I will not do is telegraph my punches. Osama bin Laden will be the last to know,” he said today while riding on the back of his bus between Florida events. In other words: he’s not telling. Why not share his strategy with the current occupant of the White House? “Because I have my own ideas and it would require implementation of certain policies and procedures that only as the president of the United States can be taken.”

That response, of course, echoes Richard Nixon’s campaign promise in 1968 to stop the Vietnam War. Nixon also declined to say what his plan was. America’s involvement in the Vietnam war continued until 1973.
I'm still waiting for what his plan would have been.

The thing is, if one were to recall that election cycle, his lack of communication on this issue (and others) hurt his chances for election. Ok, and Sarah Palin, but that isn't my point today. People wanted to know what McCain was hiding. That brings me to today.

The Romney/Ryan ticket don't want to tell you what they will do. Like McCain in 2008, they expect you to trust and not verify. Case in point: Paul Ryan gave an interview to the Christian Broadcasting Network during the Values Voters Summit here in DC over the weekend.
David Brody: “There are some conservatives that have spoken out saying they want to see some more specifics from the Romney/Ryan team and one thing that comes up, at least from the liberals is tax loopholes. Is there a reason you guys aren’t naming specific tax loopholes?”

Paul Ryan:Yes because we want to get it done. Look, I’ve been on the Ways and Means Committee for 12 years. I’m very familiar with how to make successful tax reforms take place. Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neil did it in 1986 but we haven’t done it since 1986 for lots of reasons which is we don’t want to presume to say ‘here’s exactly our way or the highway take it or leave it Congress.’ We want to say this is our vision, lower tax rates across the board for families and small businesses and work on the loopholes that are enjoyed by the higher income earners, take away their tax shelters so more of their income is subject to taxation. That lowers everybody’s tax rates. And we have to be able to work with Congress on those details, on how to fill it in and more to the point we don’t want to cut some backroom deal that they did with Obamacare where we hatched some plan behind the scenes and they spring it on the country. We want to do this in front, in the public, through congressional hearings with Congress so that we can get to the best conclusion with a public participation. That’s the process that works the best to ultimate success gets this done. That’s why we’re doing it this way.”
So basically, to translate, they won't name specifics because "they want to get it done" and not "want to cut some backroom deal " instead, they desire "want to do this in front, in the public, through congressional hearings with Congress so that we can get to the best conclusion with a public participation."

Say what? This is an election, this is the time for the public to know specifically what they want to propose. Like John McCain, they want the public to simply trust them.

Or, maybe like McCain, they really don't have a plan at all. Just leave it to a do-nothing Congress... or is it this?
All we have to do is replace Obama. ... We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don't need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.

Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States. This is a change for Republicans: the House and Senate doing the work with the president signing bills. His job is to be captain of the team, to sign the legislation that has already been prepared.
That was Grover Norquist.

The question: Is there a reason you guys aren’t naming specific tax loopholes?”

The answer? “Because I have my own ideas and it would require implementation of certain policies and procedures that only as the president of the United States can be taken.”

Pay attention to the hand they are showing. They want you to just trust and not verify. They really think American voters are that naive. Or, they think ALL Americans are conservative. We know what Rick Santorum had to say about that. Be smart, that's not elitist, it's just common sense. The GOP actually wants you to be uniformed and vote for them anyway.

The American people deserve have the RIGHT to know what they will be voting for come November. It's time for Romney/Ryan to put up or shut up.

and
Raine

Romney's campaign KNOWS we've heard it all before.. the trickle-down bullshit that the GOP has been defecating for over three decades now, the empty bible-thumping, the false compassion, the convenient outrages, the bold & stinking lies.

They've got NOTHING, and they represent NOTHING of benefit to this country.

Good day, everyone. Watching Koch Brothers Exposed on Current. Seems they have been showing a lot recently the Robert Greenwald documentaries and hope they get some attention this election year on the dangers of voting Republican in this day and age.

I was having a discusion about the Republican party with my mom over the weekend. We came to the conclusion that the last non-loon to run for president as a Republican was Nixon.

I'd just ask that USC and Five Points be excepted from that order, although once the Gamecocks win the SEC (and possibly a national title) you may use your discretion.

It's a thought to consider that Nixon's is too liberal for today's GOP.

Hey gang, back from KORH. I did see Nine-o-Nine get off, but Witchcraft was having some engine trouble today and didn't go anywhere.

Of course, I am happiest while on a hot airfield sucking kerosene fumes (or listening to the sweet sounds of four Wright R-1820s, but I digress.)

Well, kind sir. Witchcraft is the only flyable Consolidated B-24J in the world today. Nine-o-Nine is a Boeing B-17G, one of the twelve remaining flyable of the type.

Both are owned and operated by the local Collings Foundation, (Stow, MA) although the home airstrip is far too small to host these aircraft.

After they complete the last leg of the "Wings of Freedom" tour, they will be heading south to their Florida base for the winter. (Alas, location unknown.)

The "heavies" are touring this season with a North American P-51C "Mustang"...also a rare flyable type. (Most survivors are D-models)

Yes. The Brits doctored some up with the "Malcolm Hood" that they had been using on a version of the Spitfire. It made it back up the design chain and NA revised the airframe for the D models to take advantage. (Cut down the rear fuselage to give the pilot all-around vision.) They had to add an extended tail fillet to restore some directional stability.

Mondo knows his WW II aircraft! The J version of the Liberator, and the G verison of the Flying Fortress are distiguished from previous models by the chin turret under the bombadier's bubble?

I had to look up the info for the B24J:

The B-24J was very similar to the B-24H, but shortages of the Emerson nose turret required use of a modified, hydraulically powered Consolidated A-6 turret in most J model aircraft built at Consolidated's San Diego and Fort Worth factories. The B-24J featured an improved autopilot (type C-1) and a bombsight of the M-1 series. B-24H sub-assemblies made by Ford and constructed by other companies and any model with a C-1 or M-1 retrofit, were all designated B-24J. The J model was the only version to be built by all five factories involved in B-24 production. (Total: 6,678)

G-model Fortresses (Or, Douglas built "Block 50" F-models) had a number of improvements, the most obvious being the chin turret. They also had offset waist gun positions and the "Cheyenne Tail" became standard. And of course the usual avionics and other upgrades.

Mondo, I am so sorry to hear about your Dad.

When my Dad passed 17 years ago, I mourned for a long time. However, the good memories have come to be the dominant memories.

Raine, thanks for a great blog. (I also enjoyed the other blogs over the past few days -- I spent some time catching up today.) Romney will need to offer details and make a case as to why he should be president. So far, he is doing a poor job of it.
