Time to get something good going on.

There has been far too much sickness, death and sadness around here. This being a generally political and socially aware blog, I'm choosing to say this:

I am proud that we have Barack Hussein Obama as our President. Unabashedly proud.

There is a small but vocal minority who will find fault in everything this man has done -- or will do. You see it. It's on TV, social media and in public.

This President and his administration has saved our auto industry, stopped our economy from sinking, and given us health care reform. He's winding down our war in Afghanistan and we are done fighting in Iraq. He pushed to repeal DADT. He's is no longer enforcing DOMA -- he has come out for marriage equality. We have tax fairness. Jobs are on the uptick, unemployment is going down. He is respected among world leaders. Osama Bin Laden is dead.

Now is taking on the gun violence problem in our country.

You can see more letters here.

All of these things have happened, and more, in his first term in office.

I don't care if I am called a fangirl, I am proud of this president and the choices he has had to make. I trust that he has good intentions. I feel secure in knowing that he does what is right for the country. I believe his heart is in the right place.

In spite of obstruction from so many corridors, hallways and offices of the nations capital -- look at how far we have come in just four years. Sometimes it is easy to miss the forest for the trees, but today I say sit back and look around. Look at the trees, the fauna, the flowers -- growth that has happened while we struggle.

I take great hope hope that we are going to continue our slow but forward moving progress. Sunday, the President will begin his second term in office. He's going to have our back for four more years, that is something to be happy about.

I've got his back in return. Without question, I've got his back. I'm proud to do so.

That makes me happy.

Imagine how much more we could accomplish if our opponents were interested in America, instead of maximizing their power.

Mornin' all!

Last night I spent like 3 hours talking to my friend sorting everything out & helping her hunt for job leads. She's still on the treatment program so that's very good, and I should be gettin' everything including the bank fees paid back today.

Scoopster, I am glad that you are getting some good news.

Raine, I think that the President has done much but I would like him to do more. Mind you, doing anything in face of a Republican Party that is the most conservative incarnation of that party in a century.

Say gang, in some TriSecian good news....

I think we rarely discuss personal finances here, but I am pleased to report that for the first time in what feels like years, we've made it through one pay cycle without any "love notes" from the bank.

This is why I traded in an 11 mile commute for 40 (one way). Of course, my appendix had other ideas last year, which wound up crushing us, but I'm encouraged so far that 2013 might finally be a turnaround year in these parts.

British Naval Officer Eric Brown, who interviewed Irma Grese for Nuremburg, called her "The worst human being I have ever met."

Remarkably, Mr. Brown is still alive (aged 93), so perhaps a meeting with Rush can be arranged so Mr. Brown can re-assess his opinion.

Ya know we had an interesting dilemma come up when we were sorting through the job listings. Since she's in treatment, she absolutely will NOT pass a drug screening. And we weren't sure if being up front about it would be a plus OR a minus.

Good news. I am awaiting word today and tomorrow on my two most recent interviews.

I am still checking on jobs while I do so, although I am not finding much in teaching. I am seeing several non teaching jobs but I have not been called to interview for one in quite a long time.

The would require me to expend energy on product that can easily be purchased at a fine, upscale retailer. What I would love to find is Neutragena glycerin soap. It used to come in this out sized dense bar that would last about forever.

If you dare venture to the mall, Bath & Body Works used to sell glycerin soap in many scents. I haven't been there in years, so I don't know if that's still the case. No Neutrogena though

Like an idiot, when I stopped by last night for the second blood test in two days, I had them take it out of the same arm. It's now essentially useless for anything but typing and even that's an adventure. So I have a "dead" wing, and a scratched foot, courtesy of Sophie, who got spooked while I was getting her food and decided to use my foot as a launching pad.

Doc ordered me some meds on Tuesday that will hopefully get my blood sugar under control. Was a bit worried that I hadn't heard from the online store about the new scripts yet. Downloaded the CVS app to my phone this morning and BINGO, my meds have shipped.

I have a new "neighbor" in my lab space....a temperature chamber. I don't think it heats well enough to function as a pizza oven, however . Just hope it isn't too noisy.

For some reason I still have Superb Owl (the last one) on my TiVo so I pulled it off and de-commercialized it (which means instead of a 30GB file it's a 19GB file). I think I was always intending to present my Giants fanatic brother-in-law with a DVD of the game. Might be a nice surprise for Sunday.

A Proclamation,
Whereas, on the sixteenth day of January, in the year of someone’s Lord two thousand and thirteen, a proclamation was issued by some writer/comedian on a political “blog,” containing, among other things, the following:

“As of this date, going forward in perpetuity, given the overwhelming majority’s attitude towards sensible gun restrictions, I am no longer going to engage in debate or discourse with anyone who is among the very small but recalcitrant and vocal minority, known as Gun Zealots over the aforementioned sensible gun restrictions. And I am also hereby absolving the rest of the nation from their duty to involve any of their fellow Americans who fall into that descriptor – Gun Zealots – as well.

I vow to start this new era first and foremost on my website as well as on the accompanying Facebook page. Anyone who engages in belligerent, talking-point fueled nonsense as means of distracting from actual discourse will be banned, on sight and without prejudice. If you can argue against gun control without telling me I’m not allowed to participate, I’m or that I’m a Marxist-Leftist-Socialist-Pussy-Asshole-Douchebag simply because I share the opinion of the overwhelming majority, you are welcome to enjoy a vigorous and spirited debate. But if you are here to malign me or anyone else who is trying to discuss in a civil manner the problems facing this country in terms of gun violence and what some possible solutions are to fix them, you are not welcome here, ever again.

As firm a believer as I am in the First Amendment, and as firmly as I believe that the powers contained in that most sacred of legislative prose give the rest of the document it’s power, I will not tell you that you cannot spout your nonsense at all. It’s just not welcome here, in my forum, or any forum I conduct. And I hereby absolve any and all other Americans in the same situation of their responsibility to engage with Gun Zealots. It’s time for those who would prefer that mass murders be carried out from time to time instead of even talking about gun control measures to slink back among themselves and see if they have the requisite votes from stopping the rest of the country from moving forward, not to a total disarmament but to a restoration of common sense and societal responsibility. I do not aim to excise either the First or Second Amendment rights from Gun Zealots, but I, and no one else is under any legal or moral obligation to entertain the bleating and gnashing of teeth of the Gun Zealot. They are not out for discourse. They are out to arm our nation against each other.

When and if this small group of hyperbolic and histrionic Americans decides to stop resisting all attempts at dialogue, and can promise to not derail every discussion with hissy-fits and absurd claims that no gun laws ever work, when they are ready to stop insisting that every regulation is equal to prohibition, when they fucking grow up and stop pretending as if guns are benign implements of peace except only in the hands of the wicked, when they realize that the Second Amendment promises them to never have their guns ripped away by Federal authorities, and when they see that their fellow Americans who do wish to engage in dialogue and discussion are not the enemy, but instead someone with a desire to find ways to keep more innocents from being slaughtered, this proclamation will be null and void. They will be welcome back with open arms.

Until that day, I hereby emancipate the sane and rational majority from the tyranny of the small but extremely vocal minority. We can fear not, friends. There is not a violent uprising coming. President Obama does not have the legal authority to steal everyone’s guns. And he has no intention of doing that, and I promise you all that he will not, ever. And so it is with that recognition of the reality of the situation that I proclaim us all free from the chains that bind our society and keep us from finding common ground, and prevent us from at least trying, which is all we really want to do anyway.”

Mala, you are gonna love this. From the commensts at the link (bold face mine)

I am not a Gun Zealot. I do own more several firearms. I have pistols for target shooting and personal protection. My long guns (shotguns and rifles) are for mainly for hunting, with a few just for target shooting. However, I also own one AR-15, and it never occurred to me to use it to shoot human beings. I bought it because I live in rural Texas, and feral hogs are a serious problem. When encountering a herd of wild pigs, it is quite advantageous to be able to fire more than two or three rounds, and as rapidly as possible. So, I do use my AR-15 for hunting something other than people. If that qualifies me as a Gun Zealot in your book, so be it.

Kind of a meta point about gun enthusiests, and their appalling lack of knowledge of ballistics of the bullet from an AR type rifle. Without being too technical, the 5.56 round is designed to have a high velocity which compensates some for its low mass. One of the things that it know to do when it hits the target is tumble end over end. What this does is inflict massive hydrostatic shock and tissue damage to the target. This is why the rifle is a terrible hunting weapon. The AR-15 designed as military weapon, which has one thing to do; incapacitate the enemy quickly and effiecently.

Talk all you want to about using to hunt feral pigs, dude. Would you use a ball peen hammer when you should be using a claw hammer. Right tool for the job people.

HERe is the thing -- tell me ONE animal that doesn't run upon hearing the first gun shot. Don't get me wrong, I see different needs for guns -- I agree about that.

But come one HERDS OF FERAL HOGS are a threat to our security and that is why someone needs an assault rifle?

Feral pigs are very aggressive critters, actually. They don't run from gun fire.

I've also noted that military-style assault rifles excel at one thing - volume of fire.

In a combat situation, you don't necessarily want to kill your enemy...what you want to do is make him keep his head down so somebody else can get in a better position to take the shot.

Hence - suppressive fire. If the enemy is busy hiding in the bunker, or blindly returning fire, it's just a hair bit easier for the guy with the grenade to come up on the blindside and get the whole lot of them.

This is what assault rifles excel at - range, accuracy, and weight of fire, as Mondo noted, are all secondary.

I am still checking Boston, but i have a good reason to check on Virginia. So, I guess I will spend a little time going through the Department of Education site and see if my license can transfer over. Thanks!!

Also, I should possibly hear from two jobs today and tomorrow. (I am making a followup call around 1 PM Central with one principal.)

From a cursory look, it looks like it will be relatively cheap to get a license in Virginia. Unlike MA, it does not seem that I need to take a test. So, I will put aside some money even if I get a job at the Chicago Public Schools. (One place I am expecting to hear from may close this year, so I would like to have options.) Hopefully, the pollen from the cherry trees near DC will not play havok with my allergies if I move.

I basically found it funny that last week a caller on the Miller show said he needed his assault rifle for packs of wild hogs, and then here today, I saw it again. (could be the same fellow, I don;t know)

I know it is a problem, but this is just not a good enough reason for not having gun control issues put in place.

I had been hoping they would have a summer show here and we could time it with a meet up but alas no.

I guess it's frustrating that they scaled down to 3 shows this year with one in the east, one in the midwest, and one out west. I guess the tour was very time consuming.

Rabbit, that is the sub story here. The one everyone is salivating over.

I just find it hard to believe that someone would go to such lengths.

Something is strange, but I don't think the hoax was to get him a better draft pick. I kinda like that the catfish dude is involved.

I didn't know what catfishing was in this context until today. I gotta see if that movie is on Netflix.

I was half joking about the cherry blossoms, as my allergies are ragweed and house dust. Also, I am not sure if most districts do take personal references. However, help finding a place to live would be good. (Ideally, pet friendly. As I type this, a picture of my dog Holly sits before her ashes. Still missing her, although her adoptive golden lab daughter next door always greats me warmly.)

No word on any places that I interviewed of late, but another Chicago Public School contacted me. It is on probation, but is in better shape than one of the places that I interviewed at last week.
Will you have three friends here in the area that will help you find a place.

I'm sending Holly love into the universe. Pet friendly shouldn't be a problem.

are you kidding people here are nuts about their pets - esp in Alexandria!

not happy with the Mic.

Glad I have this.

I don't mind going straight to the source for radio hosts that I like, I Actually like plugging into local station to give them bandwidth hits.

So we're having a contest at work for my department tomorrow. The prizes are tickets to the circus. I sent the manager of the department an email explaining my feeling on circuses and animal cruelty. I got one back from him saying if you win, we'll come up with an alternative prize. I'm a little stunned.

Can ask the hive mind here what the big freaking deal about Lance Armstrong coming clean on his doping is? He was in a sport that, if you weren't using some sort of doping you didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning. Anybody want to take a crack?

Well this should be interesting: it's snowing to beat the band, the main power's out (on a portable generator now), and my county's on a winter storm warning AND a flash flood watch. Anyone wanna come for a visit?
