This matters. It matters in ways that I, as a straight women can only try to understand.

Read Bill's story. HE one of millions who have a story, and a debt that should never have been placed upon them.

back before I found the wonderful land of progressive internet radio he was on WJFK (before they blew themselves up and before Don quit radio) and I do remember him saying back then that he was pro civil union for anyone who lived together including parents and adult children cause he saw it simply as a contract.

Good morning, bloggers.

In reflecting on the arguments at the Supreme Court, I have to wonder at some of the statements. Scalia is making, such as about fertility and Strom Thurmond.. It seems that there is little in the way of logical argument that the forces opposing marriage equality have left.

As Raine noted last night, Mrs. TriSec and I were unable to produce children "in the normal fashion". So, according to our religious extremist friends, our marriage is Illegitimate.

Thanks.

The other thing about this *controversy* is that it is a RWNJ created one. here is where it appears to have begun. From the authors bio:
Mom of seven sillies, homeschooling guru, and political junkie, Amy has perfected the art of multi-tasking. In any given day she can be found administering first grade spelling tests, passing on the virtues of hard work and ingenuity to her children, or writing for some of the nation’s premier conservative organizations like The Heritage Foundation and The Media Research Center.

Raised in the true blue state of Pennsylvania -- home of the bitter clingers -- Amy and her family broke free in 2011 and relocated to the Lone Star State where her husband has helped launch an outreach organization that is revolutionizing the prolife movement.

Amy’s passions in life include speaking out for the unborn and standing up to an over-reaching government threatening the fiber of our freedom. Through the gift of words sprinkled with a little humor and sarcasm, Amy hopes to recruit more soldiers to the conservative cause. As long as the government continues to infringe on our freedoms and children are murdered in the womb, Amy will continue writing for the sake of liberty. After all, the pen is mightier than the sword, and writing is cheaper than therapy.

And here a HuffPo article.
But is Victoria's Secret really coming for your 12-year-old? Click over to VictoriasSecret.com and you'll find no sign of a separate Bright Young Things collection. It appears that Bright Young Things is a new Spring Break-themed tagline for PINK, Victoria's Secret's more youthful counterpart.

The lingerie brand founded PINK, its younger spin-off, in 2002 with the explicit aim of targeting 15-to-22 year olds. The brightly colored sweats, bras, tank tops and undies have proven immensely popular among the high school set, but often for even younger girls in middle school too.

But there is no plan to target middle schoolers explicitly, as Bright Young Things is not a new collection as reported. A PINK spokesperson told us:

In response to questions we recently received, Victoria’s Secret PINK is a brand for college-aged women. Despite recent rumors, we have no plans to introduce a collection for younger women. "Bright Young Things" was a slogan used in conjunction with the college spring break tradition.

It is a PARENTAL responsibility to not buy these clothes for their children. I can't get upset at VS about this. 15-16 years olds are entering a period of life where they want to feel pretty --- and even sexy --

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. —Springfield police say they have arrested a man in connection with the shooting of an 11-year-old girl standing in line outside a store selling the latest Nike Air Jordan sneakers.

APPolice say 19-year-old Kenny Bynum, himself the victim of a shooting last weekend, was arrested Tuesday at the hospital in connection with the March 16 shooting of the girl.

Guardian live blogging on SCOTUS.

Justice Antonin Scalia is the most effective troll in our lifetime. He has been questioning the Justice Department lawyer, Sri Srinivasan, about why Congress should trust DoJ to enforce the laws it passes if this is going to become a regular thing. Srinivasan responded that there is no "algorithm" for when the DoJ will or won't defend a statute. Algorithm, he said! It will be interesting to hear the audio, because we'd bet that gave Scalia a chuckle.

This is one of the reasons I love the Guardian. They are snarky bastards.

BRING OUT THE FAINTING COUCHES, it's a full-fledged conservative bitching session about the Obama administration being mean and not defending the case. Justice Scalia, the WSJ writes, "called it a 'new world' where Attorney General Eric Holder can decide a law is unconstitutional, but yet not so unconstitutional that the executive branch won't enforce the law." Chief Justice Roberts calls the no-show "unprecedented."

I guess when the GOP can't win on the issues, they have to change the rules. As I recall, a kid doing so in grade school would be scolded by his or her teacher and shunned by classmates.

yes but now a days parents scold teachers and kids who cheat are treated as heroes by their peers.

Sad but true.

and that is why I'm not going back to school to become a teacher. I'd thought about it a few years ago (pre No Child) but now I'm glad I didn't. Just couldn't do it.

I dunno about that. I dunno what punting means if they are actually hearing oral arguments. If punting means upholding a lower court ruling -- then that might not be a bad thing. 8 lower federal courts have already said it is unconstitutional. from the wiki:
Section 3 of DOMA has been found unconstitutional in eight federal courts, including the First and Second Circuit Court of Appeals, on issues including bankruptcy, public employee benefits, estate taxes, and immigration.
I'm fairly sure that the second court of appeals is conservative in the way it generally rules.

This is the take from TPM.

If they punt the Prop 8 case, then marriage equality can resume in California.

to me punting means not really do anything and make it so its someone else's problem - just getting the feeling like its not going to be a resolved issue. But then again nothing has been a resolved issue for the past 5 years thanks to crazy people

Pressurization issues are relatively minor, in the big picture. (When compared to say, a hydraulics failure or engine fire.) The protocol is for the crew to don their oxygen masks and then commence an emergency descent to below 10,000 MSL, where the air is thck enough to breathe.

The problem is unconsciousness comes on very quickly at altitude, it's a matter of less than 20 seconds or so. Was it Payne Stewart back in '96, or think of the Greek airliner that augured in on Cyprus a few years back. (Or was it Crete?)

Height Above Mean Sea Level

Height above mean sea level (AMSL) is the elevation (on the ground) or altitude (in the air) of an object, relative to the average sea level datum. AMSL height is used extensively in radio (both in broadcasting and other telecommunications uses) to determine the coverage area a station will be able to reach. It is also used in aviation, where some heights are recorded and reported with respect to mean sea level (MSL) (contrast with flight level), and in the atmospheric sciences.

Even though our friends at Wiki report it as "AMSL", in aviation it's commonly abbreviated as "MSL". This differs from "AGL", or "Above Ground Level", which is yet a different way of measuring the height of the aircraft. You wouldn't, for example, want to be travelling at 5,000 MSL in the Denver area. This is entirely different from the "Flight Levels" referenced, which are actually based on a standard barometric pressure of 29.92 inHG ( or inches of Mercury ). This is a universal standard, When your pilot reports you travelling at "35,000 feet", you are actually not. It's Flight Level 35 (FL35), which may or may not be somewhere near that 35,000-foot mark, depending on the local barometric pressure. But since all aircraft en route that day will have their altimeters set to the default 29.92, the planes will be able to measure to the same standard and not hit each other.

Clear? There will be a quiz later.
