Wednesday Mixed Bag
Author: BobR    Date: 05/08/2013 11:33:01

Some days there is a dearth of interesting news, and other days there is a plethora. The last couple days has been more of the latter. Several stories are worthy of discussion and possibly a deeper evaluation within the context of other events, but I am not going to do that today. Instead, I present several topics, and leave it to you to continue the discussion in the comments.

As if on cue to reinforce TriSec's blog yesterday are these two little gems. First, the chief of the Air Force's Sexual Assault Prevention unit was unable to prevent himself from sexually assaulting a woman in Arlington (presumably after getting himself all horned up at the one and only strip club in the area). More embarrassing for him - she beat the crap out of him. One wonders if he is the author of the brochure the Air Force put out for female members that says the best approach to a sexual assault may be to just submit. Apparently, the woman Colonel Horny assaulted didn't get the memo. The Air Force wants to handle this as an internal case, but that is unlikely to happen. This was a civilian on a public street.

The huge story of course is the escape of three women, abducted as girls 10 years ago, in Cleveland. Amanda Berry and neighbor Charles Ramsey are the heroes here, Amanda for avoiding the natural fear of being punished for trying to escape, and Ramsey for taking action instead of ignoring it. The story is really a huge shocker: shocking that these three girls were still alive after all these years, shocking that the owner of the house was able to get away with it for 10 years, shocking that Amanda Berry had given birth and had her 6 year old daughter in hand while escaping. Everyone is wondering how no one (including the police) noticed anything amiss over the years. Even the man's uncle is shocked.

What's NOT shocking is that Rush Limbaugh is so desperate that he plumbed the depths of incredulity to try to link this to President Obama:
Limbaugh admitted that he had “no idea” about why Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight had been kidnapped and then were able to escape after 10 years.

“But as it so happens, I happened last night to watch Hawaii Five-0 on CBS,” he explained. “Hawaii Five-O‘s premise last night was kidnapped girls held until they were 18 and then let go or killed — well, always killed — by a couple doing it for the welfare benefits.”

“Now I don’t know what happened in Cleveland, but I couldn’t help but make the connection. I mean, if everybody else in the low-information crowd is going to use what happens on TV for reality, why can’t I?”

Limbaugh added: “Three brothers, but not related the the three women, have been arrested in Cleveland — which voted Obama. Not that that’s got anything to do with anything!”

Tool.

And finally - there is the sad news that there will be no Colbert in Congress. South Carolina decided that an intelligent trustworthy Democrat was not as worthwhile to represent their state as a lying adulterer who abandoned his office and used state funds to finance a trip to see his mistress. You deserve what you get South Carolina.

That's it for today. Let's see what else comes our way...

Morning all. A moment of squee happened as I was turning into the parking lot this morning. I had to break to allow the mamma goose, her 4 little down covered goslings and papa goose to waddle across the road.

My mom was telling me about an op ed piece she read yesterday about Mark Sanford. Basically the theme of the article was let Sanford win, Colbert-Bush would most likely loose next year anyway.

It was! Even if Canada geese are in invasive species here. They poop all over everything and that poop is corrosive to metal and asphalt.

that might have been written by Charlie Pierce. He was saying something similar to that on the show yesterday.

That's the thing that bothered me about that 911 call, I've had the 911 operation stay on the line with me when I heard something outside my house late at night and it turned out to be a cat.

The operator there just seemed to want to get her off the phone. That is one of the hardest jobs in the world emotionally, but there are some people who should not do it.

If I see my friend who's a 911 dispatcher for local the local PD this week, I am going to ask her professional opinion about that.

Take a look:
Martin L. Flask, director of the city's Department of Public Safety, said his department is aware of the criticism the dispatcher received for his rude attitude toward Charles Ramsey, the man who called 9-1-1 after he heard Berry screaming "Help, help me out" while trying to escape from the Seymour Avenue home of Ariel Castro.

Ramsey said the dispatcher didn't take his call seriously.

Flask, a former Cleveland police chief, released the following statement:

"While the call-taker complied with policies and procedures which enabled a very fast response by police, we have noted some concerns which will be the focus of our review, including the call-taker's failure to remain on the line with Ms. Berry until police arrived on the scene.

Well gang, my last link to my ancestral homeland is for sale.

"Auntie Mean" has put grandma's house up for sale in Saugus. She is essentially throwing my mother under the bus; she's got noplace to go, because once my aunt has the money in her pocket, she's moving to Florida year-round.

Have I mentioned that my mother is housebound an on oxygen?

My brother and I have essentially cut off my aunt. I particularly has a sad because we grew up in that yard, and it's the last physical link we have to our grandparents.

But, money is everything, isn't it?

Good, they should be concerned. But it shouldn't have taken an incident like this to find an issue.

My entire point all along was that this was an active situation --

had it been a house fire report, I could see getting the caller off the line -- especially if the person is in a burning building. Her captor could have come back at any moment, and to be honest, Berry didn't know Ramsey--

She was already outside of the house where she was being held captive. At a certain point. I guess I feel like she should not have been left alone -- at all.

Ramsey was there, but 911 was her lifeline to being rescued from the hell of her captivity. She didn't know Ramsey, as much of a hero I think he is -- he was still a stranger. 911 was the lifeline of trust she needed for help.

After my mother's 2nd husband died, she sold her house and moved back in. Her name is not on the property. We thought that was a mistake 12 years ago, and we have now been proven correct.

You have no idea - this is the same aunt I went to Florida to drive home a year ago this week. She is a completely different person in West Palm Beach, I swear she is bipolar.

As soon as she got home last year, she announced that she wanted everybody to "leave her alone", so nobody came to visit all summer. Then she went to Florida early last season because "nobody came to see me." My mum turned 70 last year. Brother TriSec and I were planning a big clambake, all we needed was a big yard to do it in. "I don't want to have a party, it's too much work". So, no party. (Never mind that all she had to do was walk out her back door - Michael and I were going to pay for it all and stage it ourselves.) She had a pool in the backyard, and Javi has a summer birthday. "No, I don't want kids running around my yard". And then she took the pool down last Labor Day out of spite.

Well, Fuck you then.

And then there's the business about almost dying last year. She didn't come to the hospital to see me; only saw me once during my convalescence at home, and when she did, all she wanted to know was when I would be "better" so I could come down and do some work around the yard for her. I have not had civil words with her since.

Where is your mom going to go? Is there any way you and your Brother could purchase the house? Rent to own? something to slow this down?

(throw poop in the yard before open houses?)

I may try. I have a "nuclear option"....my name is on the condo in Florida, and has been for almost 20 years now.

Jenny and Dino forgive me, but if she's going to be this much of a bitch, I don't want any part of her anymore. Take my name off and get me off all the contact lists for the association. You're on your own, because this is what she clearly wants from us.

Or, alternately, I wonder what MY legal rights are, because she can't remove me without a signature, I could potentially make things hellacious down there.

I've been wondering about Ariel Castro since I read this story yesterday:
The daughter of kidnapping suspect Ariel Castro told America's Most Wanted in 2004 that she was the last person to see Gina DeJesus alive. (snip)

When her mother said no, Castro said they parted ways.
This makes me wonder a lot now:
Court records indicate Ariel Castro fought with his former wife, Grimilda Figueroa, over the custody of their children. Figueroa twice suffered a broken nose, as well as broken ribs, a knocked-out tooth, a blood clot on the brain and two dislocated shoulders, according to a 2005 filing in Cuyahoga County Domestic Relations Court. In the filing, her attorney requested that a judge “keep (Castro) from threatening to kill (Figueroa).”
Is Ms. Figueroa the mother?

Amanda Berry kidnapped in 2003.

There was a Domestic Violence report from 2005.

Mornin' all..

Today is Pick-a-Utility day in the moving saga.. Electric is simple enough - you just call & they show up to turn on the breakers. I've decided that I will NOT get any cable/satellite tv service at all, and will instead stream or download any movie or show I want. I'm also not going to get a landline phone. So that leaves just internets - which on its own is STUPID expensive (especially since I'd want the higher bandwidth service for downloading all those shows & movies!)

I bet you're all surprised I don't ALREADY download everything full-time.

I don't think that's a coincidence.

I believe I have stumbled upon the "root cause" for Troop 250's plethora of issues.

"The person or group with the authority to appoint a volunteer has the authority to remove and replace that volunteer."

For 99% of scouting units, that means the chartered organization. A church, school, or other civic organization that organizes the unit and grants them permission to opearate and gives them meeting space.

Troop 250 is chartered by "Friends of Waltham Scouting", which consists of the Troop leadership. Meaning they are self-chartered and answer to no one.

(This is legal, some scout units are chartered by their alumni associations or other ad-hoc groups of adults.)

This is over the top even for Boner and the GOP:

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Tuesday essentially agreed with Democrats' arguments that a Republican bill to prioritize debt payments would put China before U.S. troops -- except he suggested that would be a good thing.

During an interview with Bloomberg TV, Boehner was asked about this week's vote on the Full Faith and Credit Act, which, in the event that the U.S hits its debt ceiling, would direct the treasury secretary to pay only the principal and interest owed to bondholders before making any other payments. Money for other payments, such as those for veterans, Medicare and national security, would have to be divvied up from what remained of the scarce federal funds.

Grunt. The mean Republicans took our F-18s away. (Blue Angels grounded, RI ANG airshow and open house cancelled as a direct result.)

This is also why we had two civilian P-51s dust-up Fenway back on opening day instead of the usual flyby by the Mass 104th.

Grunt. The mean Republicans took our F-18s away. (Blue Angels grounded, RI ANG airshow and open house cancelled as a direct result.)

This is also why we had two civilian P-51s dust-up Fenway back on opening day instead of the usual flyby by the Mass 104th.

Not sure how ours escaped the axe, in fact the whole air field getting shut down due to the sequester has some how managed to magically not happen also. Me thinks someone with some powerful ties uses that little airport.

Manassas Regional Airport (HEF)
The largest executive regional airport in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is conveniently located 30 miles from Washington, D.C. We offer the freedom to fly on your own schedule, without the hassles of a major airport, offering you reliable and convenient service in modern facilities.

I would assume that's the airport that all the lobbyists fly into with their private jets?

A source further noted that Knight told police that there was another woman in the home when she got there, but one day she woke up and the woman was gone. There is writing on the wall in the basement which includes the name of a female and says, “Rest In Peace,” but police do not know if that is related to the case at this time.

Am I the only one that thinks this isn't the end of the horrors we're going to see?

Tri, if I was going to have a base operation, I sure as hell wouldn't have it all way out in frigging Manassas (No offense, Mala). I would have it either at Dulles or National. Preferably National since it less than 20 minutes from K Street via limo.

Hell I would even have it at Thurgood Marshall-BWI

Hmm, see now we have private jets at Logan too, but nobody likes to fly in there because of the congestion and city traffic. That's why Hanscom gets all the Learjets around here. But that's much closer to the city, and is along the technology belt and right near Raytheon, where most of that traffic goes anyway.

Hey!

Manassas Airport is really nice - I used to do step up for the Cablevision Tent for the air show.

Manassas is also rather close to Middleburg, Aldie, and some other moneyed areas.

I would say this, lobbyists and other high end government parasites, National.
Tech weenies, Dulles.

I would think that Bob Pittman's air force was based at Dulles. The AOL campus was within spitting distance of the airport.

the end of "town" by 66 - no it's not all that wonderful, its a bit bipolar. One side of the overpass is Bob Evans, Home Depot, gas stations (one that the sniper hit) and a creepy looking hotel. The other side has a nice NOVA campus and the battlefield. Plus that's really not Manassas, that Prince William County. City of Manassas much cuter and we don't like for people to forget we have nothing to do with the county.

Yeah that Sudley Road area going into Manassas is awful. A land of tacky stripmalls, fast food franchises and chain restaurants. It is suburban sprawl at its worst. Then you hit Manassas proper and it suddenly is nice.

That Shell station at 66 and 234? I've pumped a lot of gas there. It still creeps me out that the Sniper shot at it.

Welsh really needs to go. He needs to be removed of his command. In one of the articles I posted here yesterday he justified his request to take the Crystal city Assault and battery case into the military by saying the military is only 1% worse than the national average.

I think that Sears used to be the old Woodies, if I remember right, there was restaurant at the top floor that we would eat at. Dropped my beanie doll behind the booth once and a bunch of the waiters pulled out the booth behind us to get my doll for me
