Start Your Engines
Author: BobR    Date: 11/28/2013 13:55:13

Gentlemen - start your engines. It's the official start of the holiday season. From now until New Years Day, we will be inundated with Christmas music, ads for Christmas sales, decorations everywhere, and FOX "News" once again declaring a War on Christmas because someone somewhere had the audacity to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas".

That's why today is so special. It's the calm before the storm. It's the day when family and gratitude and reverence are embraced. Tomorrow is a selfish feeding-frenzy at the mall, but today is a quiet moment at home.

At least it is for most people. Some still have to work. I feel bad for the TV and radio people working today, for those at the gas stations and grocery stores and bus drivers and airline employees. I feel especially bad for the police and firefighters who have to dread responding to a call, knowing that a ruined holiday for someone is waiting for them at their destination.

And then there are the shoppers and retailers who used to at least abide by the technicality of opening at midnight so as not to be open on Thanksgiving day. This was the result of 7:00 AM openings sliding to 5:00 AM, then 3:00 AM before settling at midnight. Of course - that is still intruding on their employees' Thanksgiving day since they need to get there before the store opens to prepare for the onslaught.

There is a big controversy this year with several big box retailers opening today to get a jump start on raking in consumers' limited shopping dollars. In particular: Wal-Mart, who abandoned all pretense to providing good jobs this year by setting up collection boxes for its own employees. That, and they don't bother to pay time-and-a-half for those working on a federal holiday.

Will this backfire on them? Doubtful, despite a push by some to boycott shopping there today (by those who likely don't shop there anyway). It's a calculated risk. They know they'll experience some bad PR for a few days, but enough people will show up that it will pay off, and then everyone will forget about it and move on to some other cause célèbre in a few days.

For most of us though - today is the day. We'll enjoy good food and drink with friends and/or family, watch a parade, the dog show, football, and falling asleep in our lazy boy recliners.

Enjoy - Happy Thanksgiving.

Morning all.

Calm before the storm here, too. Sweet & Sour meatballs have gone in the slow cooker, and I'll be starting to clear off the table and work on some side dishes soon enough. The main event is after lunch, either we will have the awesomest turkey ever, or we'll eat sad mashed potatoes with no meat.

Working in retail, but not for a major player on the "Black Friday" scene is interesting. The store was a ghost town last night, and many people were asking us what time we opened Friday and what our specials were going to be. We don't actually do any of that; we're open at 6am, but that's it.

Of course, the "Mothership" is open 24-7, and has been since 1951. I've often wondered what goes on up there at 3am on Christmas Eve, but friends in the know tell me it's utterly deserted at that hour. 3am does remain the preferred shopping time for insomniacs, locals, and celebrities though.

As for me, I'm planning on sitting home and watching movies tomorrow. I'm going to order a couple of things online, but that's about it.

Happy Hanukkah/Thanksgiving!!
Indeed, it is the calm before the storm. Yesterday I had to venture into the mall to pick up one gift that I can't buy at a local store (I try to get 90% of my gifts locally). I was really surprised. I practically had the mall to myself! It was ....... eerie.

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I hope that everyone will have a great day!!!

I took out some chicken and will make some latkes. (My brother and his wife will likely see friends.) I am stuck working tonight, tomorrow afternoon, and Saturday at a big box retailer. Before I leave, I plan to do some job hunting. With any luck, I will have a full time job this time next year and my own place.

Most radio talk show hosts are off today. However, Bob Kincaid will be live on The Head On Radio Network at 6 PM Eastern today. So, feel free to tune in and to call in.

Kind of related to my last post, Politico has an article: 5 ways to rescue liberal talk radio (but it won't be easy.)

And I have to work today but thank goodness I get triple-time for doing it which is pretty much why I do it.

I actually had to go the store today... to the grocery store. We had friends coming over for dinner and realized that we were just about out of...

TOILET PAPER!
