'Day of Infamy'
Author: Raine    Date: 12/07/2013 13:59:53

I am assuming our Loyal TriSec is with his family today, but knowing him, I would have to assume that he would remind us that this is a very somber anniversary.

Today is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

The oldest living survivor of that day remembers as well.
No one asked Navy Lt. James Downing to hurriedly memorize the names on the dog tags of the dead and injured during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

But Downing, then 28, did it because he could not bear the thought of families not knowing the fate of their loved ones. He wrote to as many families as he could.

The Colorado Springs resident, who celebrated his 100th birthday in August, is the oldest known survivor of the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese sneak attack that killed more than 2,400 Americans .

Downing fought to save lives that day, all the while wondering whether it was the day his own life would end.
President Roosevelt would declare War on Japan the next day.

History never stops from becoming. It is up to each and everyone one of us to change course for the betterment of history.

As an aside, my condolences to the Tri Sec family on the loss of their aunt.

and
Raine

Ah, cooking breakfast in between researching stories.

THere are disturbing things happening locally; I'll be back.

Ok, so since Raine gave us the framework today, I'll continue on with the "Blog within a Blog". It was reported in this space some time ago about an ugly racist incident here in the community of Lunenburg, MA. A mixed-race football player had some graffiti spray-painted on his house; the team was implicated and the remainder of the football season was forfeited. The story has taken a bizarre and uglier turn. Can't really sugar-coat this one. It was the player's own mother.

There is talk locally of at least rescheduling the Thanksgiving game that was never played; I hope they can make it happen.

In our other ugly story today, you also probably heard about the North Andover (MA) honour student who was called by her friend at a drinking party. The student in question drove to the place and picked up her friend; she just happened to be there when the police raided the place and was caught up in the "Zero Tolerance Automatic Expulsion" dragnet with the rest of the drinking students.

This was headed for the same territory as the celebrated Eagle Scout Case, but this took a darker turn, too.

This is still developing this week, but it is becoming apparent that our honour student was at the party drinking herself....and her friend may have never existed.

So, there you have it. Today's very bizarre melded blog-within-a-blog. Enjoy.

Remember Pearl Harbor.

I went to a bat mitzvah today and one of the guests is a friend who was a World War II vet. He had planned on leaving the Army in early December, 1941 but Pearl Harbor changed everything.
