I feel like I should write something about the Boston Marathon today... or Patriot day, or the Red Sox game today... I'll leave that to TriSec.

Looking over these pictures makes me melancholy. I sometimes long for a time when we didn't have security and agents at every event or turn of the corner here in this nation. I know how we got here, and I often believe we took it all too far over a decade ago.

I think of friends and acquaintances who have been transferred (sent) to areas all over the world. Some have left for Pakistan, Australia, Saudi Arabia; soon, we will be bidding farewell to friends that are going to Russia. Yes - Russia.

This is their job, this is where they have to go. The thing is, these are real people, with families and pets and friends. They help to provide security to our nation from abroad. Some provide diplomatic relations, some do environmental work. Some work for the Government some for NGO's. These jobs existed long before that horrible day. People have been doing this long before we got to where we are today.

It is easy to rail against some sectors of our government as though it were all one evil monolithic dark entity, but the reality is there are good people doing honest, good work. They - like our first responders here on our soil and our soldiers in the armed services - sometimes risk their lives to make us safer.

Some parts of our Government like the NSA have overreached, but for the most part it is important to realize who the real enemy is: people who would kill for fundamentalist reasons. They sometimes live among us on our soil, as evidenced one year ago today, and less than a week ago. When not deranged extremists, we often see troubled people, as evidenced in Columbine, Aurora and Newtown.

I don't know if we will ever stop evil, but I do know that I appreciate the very real, living breathing friends I have made that do the work they do, even if sometimes they can't give all the details. I am glad to share meals and beverages with these people. I am glad to have them visit our home and share conversation and laughter even for just a little while.

The world isn't as black and white as some might see it. It's complex and beautiful.

I wish the very best to all the People of Boston and all of their visitors today.

and
Raine

Update: I forgot to mention something else today is.

Hahahaha. Anyone can drug test me any DAY!

btw, I seemed to have pissed off a few people when I mentioned that 420 is a date (time, day or number in general) that potheads are obsessed with and yet it's the anniversary of so many horrible acts: Columbine, Oklahoma City bombing (day after) and Hitlers birthday. I wondered why so many potheads celebrate this number along with neo-nazis. Didn't go over well.

Good morning, bloggers!! I hope that everyone had a great day yesterday. (I took a walk after helping clean my friend Mickey's condo with his nephew.)

Velveeta, sorry about the grief you got over the blog. If I had remembered it was the Fuhrer's birthday yesterday, I would have ate my Pesach dinner with more enthusiasm.

I am going to look at TriSec's photos. It will cheer me up before I listen to Randi later.

In some good news, I may have the funds for a used car soon. We will see.

Politico reported on the financial relationship between conservative groups and conservative radio hosts.

The tea party radio network
By KENNETH P. VOGEL and MACKENZIE WEINGER | 4/17/14

Glenn Beck worked the crowd like a preacher at a rally this month in Louisville, Ky., declaring that God had responded to conservatives’ prayers by sending a slate of tea party candidates to wrest control of the Republican Party from Mitch McConnell.

But there was a more earthly benefit to the arrangement that brought Beck to the rally. It was organized by the tea party nonprofit group FreedomWorks, which had endorsed the candidates — and which has paid more than $6 million in recent years to have Beck promote the group, its initiatives and events.

The FreedomWorks-Beck relationship is just one example of a powerful and profitable alliance between the conservative movement’s most aggressive groups and the most popular radio hosts. The details of the arrangements are little-known, but they have been lucrative for the recipients, and, in turn, have helped ensure that the groups get coveted airtime from hosts with a demonstrated ability to leverage their tens of millions of listeners to shape American politics. It’s an alliance that helped spawn the anti-establishment tea party and power Republicans to landslide victories in the 2010 midterms. It’s also exacerbated congressional gridlock by pushing a hard line on the budget, immigration and Obamacare, and it is roiling the Republican Party headed into critical midterm elections.

A POLITICO review of filings with the Internal Revenue Service and Federal Election Commission, as well as interviews and reviews of radio shows, found that conservative groups spent nearly $22 million to broker and pay for involved advertising relationships known as sponsorships with a handful of influential talkers including Beck, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh between the first talk radio deals in 2008 and the end of 2012. Since then, the sponsorship deals have grown more lucrative and tea party-oriented, with legacy groups like The Heritage Foundation ending their sponsorships and groups like the Tea Party Patriots placing big ad buys.

Good day, folks. I have two days off in a row and I had a day off. Although with my day off needs I may have to work 7 days in a row before my next days off since I was trying to plan a meet-up with some friends.

Listening to the Nicole podcast. She's hinting that Clear Channel was dicking around with Randi's show because they were not selling ad time on the iHeart stream and with the loss of terrestrial radio affiliates, there may be more evidence that Clear Channel is still trying to kill progressive talk radio (the moves in LA and San Francisco may have solidified that). The only thing will be whether Randi can say anything to that effect on her show.

Comment by livingonli on 04/21/2014 17:57:51
Of course as the recent Politico article may show that because advertisers have dumped political talk in general, the right-wing talk shows are able to stay in business due to even more wingnut welfare from the right-wing think tanks, issue advocacy groups, and candidates.

I think that Clear Channel had it in for Randi. We will soon know what she will say.

If she's allowed to say anything. She may have one of those deals where they still pay her as long as she doesn't spill the beans.

West Bromwich Albion, you are dead to me! You had one job today, Prevent Manchester City from getting 3 points. In this you failed. I would have been happy with a tie and City getting a point, even better, City losing and not getting any points at all.

Radio wasn't a steady career when I went to school in the 80's and now job security has become totally non-existant. Not to mention any ability to be creative has been completely killed off by media consolidation where the music stations all have cookie-cutter playlists playing the same 300 songs.

Even finding stations I like, mostly adult album alternative, is not easy. Chicago has one. Boston has a few.

I can't blame Randi for wanting to walk away from radio.

I figured that we needed a laugh today.

Well, as for some good news, I am finding teaching jobs in the Chicago area. (I think the problem here is that the market is really flooded. So, I am still checking outside of teaching as well as out East). I may also have money for a car that does NOT have the word Matchbox attached to it.

Besides Matt Barber's opinions being wildly inaccurate when compared with the facts at hand, he is calling for violence. I have to ask when a gathering of liberals will be targeted by one of his readers.
