Reality Check?
Author: TriSec    Date: 07/01/2008 17:39:33

So, we got our Federal Stimulus Check yesterday.

It’s already deposited, and I skimmed a few hundred bucks off the top that we’re going to use for spending money on vacation at the end of August. Our contribution to revitalizing that American economy, I suppose.

Mrs. TriSec needs a new muffler; there’s a few hundred bucks there that’s going to a long-deferred repair, so I guess that’s going back into the economy too. I bet the repair shop will be glad to see it…I’d imagine there’s a lot of people in the same boat that have been deferring repairs because they can’t afford them.

I tell you though, it’s what I thought to do with the rest of the money that has really and truly upset me. We’re not buying any electronics…aside from throwing a few extra bucks at the credit card companies and some other bills, over the weekend I was thinking what I could do with this money.

So…I’m planning on heading for the supermarket. Maybe I can buy some bagels, we haven’t had them for breakfast in a long time. Or brand-name orange juice, so we don’t have to drink the bitter ‘from concentrate’ stuff for a few days. Maybe some better cuts of meat for a change from chuck or chicken thighs. Hell, even a bottle of spaghetti sauce instead of the 99-cent cans of Hunt’s we’ve been eating for years, or a pound of bacon for breakfast, or something other than bologna out of the deli….

This morning, when I was thinking about making a shopping list, I just got incredibly sad over the whole thing. We’re not starving, not by a long shot. But all those little things we once took for granted in our middle-class lifestyle have slowly become luxury items. So here I am, relying on a government handout so I can buy decent orange juice.

Where has America gone?

No kiddin' and gas keeps going up and will do so for some time.

Who would have ever predicted . . .

I never thought Bush would be as bad as he has been and I KNEW he was going to be pretty darn bad.

Amen to all that, Tri and Capt,

I just ate half my burrito from yesterday's lunch for breakfast this morning and was so glad that I hadn't eaten it for dinner the night before (or else I wouldn't have had anything for breakfast). I've quit using two of my three credit cards, but am still using one out of necessity - I never seem to have enough money at the end of the month, so at this rate I will die a debtor - something that makes me ashamed and makes my father horrified, but there you have it - life in America in 2008. I always knew Bush would be a disaster, but I do believe he has outdone even my low expectations for his regime. Good luck, Tri

Cheers,

mfaye :peace:

I actually make good money at my job. Most of my financial problems are my own doing - too much credit card debt and alimony. Despite making in the high 5 figures, I have taken a second job a couple nights a week. It's not absolutely necessary, but it does allow us a few luxuries.

We've learned to stretch our budget - we buy an entire pork loin for 15 bucks and cut it up into pork roasts and boneless pork chops. We have the county farmer's market for cheap veggies, the IGA for cheap store brand stuff, and the asian farmer's market for cheap meat and fish.

I just got my truck paid off so that will help.

I haven't taken a week's vacation in at least a couple years though. Most vacations involve staying at a friend's house instead of a hotel.

I really can't complain, but I will anyway.

Thanks to Bush the middle class has indeed taken a beating. When I was laid off in 2005 and spent the last six months out of work I was able to get by because my severance package was generous enough with the added expense of a $500/month cobra account. Unfortunately, when I was able to get work again, I had to settle for less than what I made. Right now, I still make $20,000 less than what I made prior to getting laid off and as a result, I have been running up the credit cards myself to pay for things. As a result of the debt, I don't have enough money to buy another car since it's going to cost more than my car's worth to fix it. It seems like the principal reason I have chosen Vegas as a vacation spot the last few times is that I'm hoping that I just might defy the odds and come home with some extra money. And at least I have some good food and quality pool time to show for it when I don't.
