Good Morning.

We've crossed yet another milestone....today is our 2,001st day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from the warron terra, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4155
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 4016
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3694
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3296
Since Election (1/31/05): 2718

Other Coalition Troops - Iraq: 314
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 583
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 370
Contractor Deaths - Iraq: 444

We find this morning's cost of war passing through: $ 552, 547, 900, 000.00

I thought I'd start this morning by doing a little vetting of our own. Sarah Palin is such an unknown, I wonder what the veterans think of her?

Right out of the gate, I find "Veterans for McCain", which is a sub-page of the official McCain Website. Nothing to see there.

Pages deep into Google now, there's simply nothing. Palin has no position at all on our veterans and the issues they face. However, I did find an interesting eyewitness account of a typical "straight talk express" photo op...

Our family today had an interesting encounter that I wanted to share with you. We were eating at El Pinto restaurant in Albuquerque. It is the most popular New Mexican restaurant in town, a large sprawling compound with a number of dinning rooms and patio spaces.

We were eating outside in the patio closest to the main road and had just finishing lunch when I saw the McCain bus drive by! It was followed closely by a number of police motorcycles, secret service SUVS, and press vans. It was obvious they were coming to El Pinto!

We figured we'd head out and see if we could get a closer look. I decided this might be my one chance, to ask one question of each candidate. I carried Caterina (16 months) along with me to meet the candidates.

I worked my way through a number of other dinners and secret service and finally got to the patio on the other side of the restaurant. I could see John McCain ahead of me shaking hands with folks. Sorry the picture is so blurry. I had a baby in one arm and an iPhone in the other!

McCain worked his way up to me and Cat and as I shook his hand, I asked, "Sir, I respect your service but, why were you against the GI bill?" Senator McCain, paused, he looked a bit surprised at the question and then he said, "Nice to meet you." I repeated the question and he repeated his non-answer. He quickly worked his way down the line. So much for straight-talk!

I have been genuinely curious as to why he wouldn't support a bill so important to veterans (McCain opposed this bill from the beginning and then skipped the vote). Also, I was surprised at myself as I as I almost involuntarily prefaced my question with, "Sir, I respect your service but..." No wonder he's gotten a free ride by the press, I think this reaction is not unique and the press must feel the same pressure that I felt. Perhaps that explains why his poor support for veteran issues isn't well known.

Sarah Palin was next! I couldn't resist trying for a better photo. It is still blurry, but talk about a close encounter.

Sarah first looked at Caterina said hello, and I shook her hand. I asked, "Are supporting Ted Stevens this year?" She replied, "He's under indictment you know...his trial is in September." I replied, "But are you voting for him?" She walked away without answering.

I don't think this question will be answered until after Senator Stevens' trial in September and perhaps never. After all, Ted Stevens is still running for the Senate this year and a Republican vote, corrupt or not, is still a Republican vote. I was amazed that she offered up, "He's under indictment you know." She's going to need some serious handling before they let her into the wild!

I followed Governor Palin out and they stopped to purchase some salsa. This whole stop was just a photo-op and my questions, any questions were obviously not part of the script. No townhall meeting here.

After less than 15 minutes at the Restaurant the Straight-NoTalk Express headed out.

My wife Angela was at the entrance with my son Andrea holding up a home made Obama sign and shouting at McCain, Palin and the press. It made me very proud. A memorable lunch at El Pinto.

Despite having no discernible policy on Iraq or the veterans, that hasn't stopped Governor Palin from attacking Senator Obama...

LEE’S SUMMIT, MO -- Palin said here today that Obama “still can’t acknowledge the coming victory in Iraq.”

“He said he’s for change. But in Iraq, change happened, and that’s a great thing for America, senator,” Palin said at a rally with McCain at The Pavilion at John Knox Village, about 23 miles southeast of Kansas City.

Palin also repeated her line -- which fact-checkers mostly dispute -- that she stopped the infamous Bridge to Nowhere. “I told Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere. If the state wanted to build a bridge, we’d build it ourselves.”

But as our friends at Politifact put it: "In the fall of 2005, Congress removed the language specifically directing the money to the bridge, but it kept the money in place and left it up to Alaska to decide which transportation projects the state would like to spend it on. By the time Palin pulled the plug on the Gravina bridge project in September 2007, much of the federal funding for the bridge had already been diverted to other transportation projects."

Later today, Palin will take her first solo flight -- without McCain -- but has no solo events scheduled. She is skipping a Chicago fundraiser McCain and is heading straight to Cincinnati, where she will attend events with McCain on Tuesday. Campaign aides said spending the time in Ohio was a better use of her time, but would not detail what she would be doing.

Turning at last to "On the Issues" information at last is starting to surface. It's a pretty disturbing picture.

Sarah Palin on War & Peace:
* We don't know what the plan is to ever end the war. (Aug 2008)
* Wants exit plan; also assurances to keep our troops safe. (Mar 2007)
* We have not been attacked since 2001; so support our troops. (Oct 2006)
* I support the mission of our troops in Iraq. (Oct 2006)
* Our troops in Iraq keep us safe at home. (Oct 2006)
* I support President Bush's efforts to stop terrorism. (Oct 2006)

Sarah Palin on Foreign Policy:
* Peace Corps strengthens US ties abroad & enriches US at home. (Jan 2007)

Sarah Palin on Homeland Security
* Don't worry about reading Al-Qaeda terrorists their rights. (Sep 2008)
* Strong military and sound energy. (Aug 2008)
* Armed forces, including my son, give us security and freedom. (Jan 2008)
* Ask all candidates "Are you doing all you can for security?". (Oct 2007)
* Visits Kuwait; encourages Alaska big game hunting to troops. (Sep 2007)
* Obligation to support our troops, even if criticizing war. (Jun 2007)
* Proclaim "Loyalty Day" to reaffirm loyalty to America. (Apr 2007)
* Promote from within, in Alaska's National Guard. (Nov 2006)
* Let military personnel know how much we support them. (Nov 2006)

I'm hoping more information comes out the closer we get to the election. I'm particularly interested in learning what the major veteran's organizations can find out. ((IAVA and IVAW...since the VFW is in McCain's pocket.)

Mornin' Everybody,

Interesting vignette at El Pinto (I lived in Albuquerque for years and hardly consider Pinto the best restaurant in town, but whatever) the revealing encounter with the McSame/McPalin ticket speaks volumes about their attitudes and the simple fact that the GOP just does not get it, particularly nuance. I am worried, and I just don't know if the public is as savvy as they need to be to make an intelligent decision this November. I hope that the debates help

I've got meetings all morning so this may be my only visit to the bloggie until mid-day, carry on kids....

Cheers,

mfaye

We already know McCain's position: Give lip service to the troops, then vote against them (or is that the Republican platform?).

Palin is a cipher, but since she's willing to use her son's service to promote her campaign, I expect it's more of the same.

Plus am in serious SMS withdrawl without even Frangela to keep me company.

Ah, well....Sen. McCain is also coming to NH Sunday to visit the fabulous New Hampshire Motor Speedway....

But Motorcycle Weekend was back in June. And we didn't have a "Miss Cowpie" contest for Cindy, either.

And even though it's NH, there's a lot of racing fans that make the trek from this Commonwealth.

Morning all.. Ooh I might be in New Hampshire this weekend for the McBush visit. Think I can convince the group to head over to the speedway and give the ol' bastard a proper greeting?

Part 1 of 4 (plus a Coda) -- as Bill O is doing four parts with Obama (only two parts aired thus far). This is the first 1:21 of 7 minutes. Probably a waste of 10 hours of my life, but, eh... (wait for the gimmick around 1:11... )

Flying while pregnant... It's a judgment call; does this indicate bad judgment on behalf of the VP candidate?

If she gambles with her own health and the health of her unborn baby, what does that say about how concerned she would be about the rest of the United States?

btw, flying while pregnant is a judgement call. Your nurse flew to London while 6 months pregnant.....and to Miami about 3 weeks before delivery. Both were business trips, and on the last one, I brought my mom along just in case....I was a higher risk mom, but my practioners felt comfortable with my flights.

I have a friend who is pregs with twins right now, and they don't want to let her fly at 20 weeks....so its all about the situation.

From a medical standpoint, I can't believe she flew just because it was her what, 5th delivery...they do tend to go quicker after multiple births....but I guess she knew her own body at that point.

I would rather argue her lack of judgement on more cerebral points, since there are so many of em

Jim Hightower for today:

Among the media and political elites, there has been an anguished outcry against Sen. Barack Obama’s call for ending the Bush tax giveaways to people making more than $250,000 a year. Wait, they wail, that’s us! We’re not rich, we’re the middle class. Give us our tax breaks!

Some, especially Washington Republicans, go so far as to insist that no monetary figure can measure who is wealthy in America, so there should be no upper limit on who gets the goodies. Sen. John McCain – who married into a vast inherited fortune and ardently supports continued tax breaks for the rich – rushed forth to claim that some people are “poor,” even “if they are billionaires.” The difference between billionaires and bus drivers, they say, is merely a matter of attitude, not of income and assets.

Time to get a grip on reality. What would you guess is the median income for American families? Is it $250,000, or even a hundred thousand? No. It’s just $50,000 – meaning half of our households struggle to make ends meet on less than that. Indeed, those pulling down more than $250,000 a year are among the wealthiest two percent of American families, enjoying incomes five times greater than the typical family.

But … but… but… stammer the offended punditry and politicos, we live in Washington, DC, where it takes much more to be rich. Actually, not that much more. Even in that land of millionaire lobbyists, median family income is $83,000 a year.

A quarter-million bucks a year certainly doesn’t put you in the same zip code as billionaires, but neither are you living in the same world as bus drivers. Obama’s tax policies are rightly focused on benefiting America’s real majority. Why should the richest two percent of families – including billionaires – be getting tax breaks?

“Sorry, Pal, You’re Rich,” www.newsweek.com, August 27, 2008.

Washington Mutual on the brink of failure?

Washington Mutual Inc. (WM) ousted Chief Executive Kerry Killinger while also announcing it entered a memorandum of understanding with the Office of Thrift Supervision, meaning the bank is now effectively on probation.

WaMu said the regulatory warning concerns aspects of the bank's operations, especially related to risk management and compliance functions.

The bank said it will provide regulators an updated, multi-year business plan and forecast for its earnings, asset quality, capital and business segment performance. In a bid to reassure investors, WaMu said the plan "will not require the company to raise capital, increase liquidity or make changes to the products and services it provides to customers."

Shares jumped 19% to $5.09 in recent premarket trading. WaMu's shares have fallen about 85% in the past year, and analysts say its financial position is among the worst of any major U.S. financial institution.

Killinger, who helped build Washington Mutual into the nation's largest thrift and then presided over its rapid decline, had been fighting off a growing chorus of calls for his removal for months.

Alan Fishman, currently chairman of New York commercial mortgage broker Meridian Capital Group, will succeed Killinger as CEO while also joining the board. Before joining Meridian in 2007, Fishman, 62 years old, was president and chief operating officer of Philadelphia-based Sovereign Bancorp Inc. (SOV), the nation's second-largest thrift.

WaMu Chairman Stephen E. Frank called Fishman "the ideal executive to succeed Kerry Killinger and lead WaMu through its current challenges." He added that Fishman's experience "brings a unique combination of in-depth industry knowledge, an entrepreneurial approach, and strong management skills that make him the right choice to be CEO of WaMu at this critical juncture."
