Chaos Theory
Author: TriSec    Date: 08/12/2017 10:25:00

Dr. Ian Malcolm: There. Look at this. See? See? I'm right again. Nobody could've predicted that Dr. Grant would suddenly, suddenly jump out of a moving vehicle.
Dr. Ellie Sattler: Alan? Alan!
[Jumps out of the vehicle]
Dr. Ian Malcolm: There's, another example.
[laughs to himself]
Dr. Ian Malcolm: See, here I'm now sitting by myself, uh, er, talking to myself. That's, that's chaos theory.

It's crazy, isn't it? Some days it feels like it's easier to write a laundry list of what hasn't gone wrong than what has since 20 January.

It almost felt to me like I should have written a Saturday Bonus Edition of AAV, but instead I've just got a laundry list of headlines.

China's sticking its nose in the North Korea business. But maybe for the better.

According to Chinese state media, Mr Xi told Mr Trump in a phone call that "all relevant parties" should stop "words and deeds" that would exacerbate the situation.
Mr Xi also stressed China and the US share "common interests" over denuclearisation and maintaining peace on the Korean peninsular.
A White House statement on the phone call did not mention the apparent plea to the US president.

It's now August 12, which means it's getting close to "Hell Week" in Boston - when the quarter-million or so new college students move into town at the same time. I'm sure other college towns experience this phenomenon, but of course other places do it differently.

Hundreds of US white nationalists have rallied at the University of Virginia, protesting against plans to remove a statue of a confederate general.
The group waved torches and chanted "Jews will not replace us" and "white lives matter" as they marched through the Charlottesville university.
There were clashes with counter protesters, while the local mayor condemned the march as racist.
A larger "United the Right" rally is planned in the city on Saturday.

Of course, you could probably travel at this time of year. Venezuela has some lovely geography, for example. Better see it before Trump destroys it.

President Trump’s remarks on Friday that he would not rule out a “military option” to quell the chaos in Venezuela set off a late-night diplomatic duel, with the defense minister accusing Mr. Trump of “an act of madness” and the White House saying it had turned away a call from Venezuela’s president.

“It is an act of supreme extremism,” Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López said late Friday in Caracas, the capital.

“As our minister of defense and a Venezuelan citizen,” he added, “I say it is an act of madness.”

But I will end on a serious note. The World's Oldest Man has died at the age of 113. Long-lived persons see a great many things during their long lives, but but Mr. Kristal saw more than most. He was a Holocaust survivor.

Polish-born Yisrael Kristal died on Friday, a month before he was due to turn 114, Israeli media reported.

Mr Kristal, who lived in Haifa, Israel, hit the headlines last year after deciding to celebrate his bar mitzvah a century late.

The original celebration had not taken place because World War One broke out.

Mr Kristal was born in the village of Zarnow, about 90 miles (146km) south-west of Warsaw, in 1903.

The son of a religious scholar, Mr Kristal lost his mother and father during World War One, according to reports. He later moved to Lodz to work in the family confectionery business.
After the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany in 1939, Mr Kristal and his family were moved into the Lodz ghetto.

His two children died there and Mr Kristal and his wife Chaja Feige Frucht were sent to Auschwitz in 1944 after the ghetto was liquidated.

Mr Kristal's wife was murdered in Auschwitz but he survived, performing slave labour in that and other camps. When he was found by the Allies in May 1945 he weighed just 37 kg (5 stones 11 lbs).

According to Tablet Mag, he thanked the Soviet soldiers who rescued him by making them sweets.

The sole survivor from his family, Mr Kristal emigrated to Israel in 1950 with his second wife and their son, where he continued to run his confectionery business until his retirement.

Mr Kristal was officially recognised as the world's oldest man by the Guinness Book of Records in March 2016.

Do try to have a good Saturday.

May Yisrael Kristal's memory be for a blessing. May we see better days even though darkness seems to cover us like a shroud.

I said the Mourner's Kaddish last night for a friend's father and the son of a friend on Facebook. In honor of them and Yisrael Kristal, this is appropriate. Let us hope that many more will not soon mourn due to a needless war.
