The Truth is Out There - Somewhere...

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." - Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects

There's a saying we on the left have used in the past that goes: "You are entitled to your own opinions. You are not entitled to your own facts". The notion is that truth is absolute, despite one's political leanings. It seems like decades ago when TV news programs and newspapers reported facts, and that was what the general populace used to formulate their opinions. There were ideological differences as to what those facts meant, but everyone started with the same base set of information.

Sure, there were paranoid conspiracy peddlers, distributing leaflets looking like they were hastily printed in a college dorm, or broadcasting on late night AM stations. They were considered amusing entertainment by most.

That all seems so quaint.

We were already on a precipitous edge when tRump came crashing on the scene, bringing his used car salesman bluster yelling "Fake news!", and bolstered by a fine-tuned Russian propaganda machine using the internet. They muddied the waters to the extent that truth is not only no longer absolute - it's nearly indiscernible from all the noise posing as news and fact-based reporting.

It began with what Stephen Colbert labeled "truthiness" - the opinion-based discussions that pose as reporting on all of the cable news channels. "Hard" news is almost non-existent. Newspapers still carry a certain weight, because they are subject to libel. Those who disagree with the facts (or how they are presented), however, can simply find another outlet - reliable or not - online to provide them confirmation bias for their preconceived notions. It's legitimizing and giving steroids to the paranoid conspiracy theories that once provoked bemusement.

This is the world we live in, where no one can really know what is truth and what isn't. This was presented beautifully in a recent episode of the "X-Files". The entire episode is a bit silly, but this scene is perfection - all 4 1/2 minutes of it:

Even if you are not an "X-Files" fan, I highly recommend seeking out this episode (episode title: "The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat") and watching it (Hulu or YouTube - you can find it; the Video Is Out There . The
tRump-mocking scene at the end is hysterical).

The Russians meddling in our election is overt cyber-terrorism. However, what they and tRump have done is far more insidious and dangerous - they have made it extremely difficult (if not impossible in some cases) to separate truth from fiction and opinion. Memes with statistics that are completely made up go viral before the fact-checkers can shoot them down, and the fact-checking does not generally have the same infectious power as a post that reinforces one's beliefs. Even the fact-checkers themselves are looked upon as "fake news", so compelling is the propaganda.

This is a dangerous world we live in. The internet has become the "freedom of the press" guaranteed for all, but I see the damage it's done and wonder whether equal access is always such a good idea. The Truth is Out There - and it's drowning.

Mornin' all..

I managed to see part of the CNN town hall last night (their website lets you watch a few minutes of live channel feed before a paywall pops up, but I think they opened it up all the way cuz it kept streaming after the timer ran out).

Dana Loesch is a sad fucking excuse for a human being. I hope for her sake she never meets someone who thinks as loosely about other people's lives as she does about the victims that she's helped create..

good morning.

Personally, I am more offended and outraged at what the said at that listening session.

Um so those saying that to ball for Rubio to show up or that he gets bonus points for it, no, it's his f-ing job to show up and talk to his constituents. He doesn't get extra credit for just showing up.

Oh, you know what pissed me off? Betsy DeVos' smiling face. These people don't care. They got their blood money and that's all that matters.

No he doesn't get extra credit, just the normal kind. But at least he was there and ready to discuss this stuff. You can't even say that about Rick Scott or any of the GOP House delegation.

Valid point.

OH yeah I see this popping up on Twitter a lot today.

They keep making a big deal about arming teachers. Yet when an armed teacher is killed by a cop for absolutely no plausible reason, they're fucking silent.

That armed teacher was Philando Castille.

Morning, comrades.

Safely back in provincial little Boston after 48 hours in the Big City.

You know what's really pissing me off about this whole shooting (and many others)? The NRA mouthpieces claiming the victims are some sort of "grief actors" or "false flags".

I'm sorry, they're dead. What the fuck is this?

I've had two friends murdered by guns. I'm not an actor; neither are their families, friends, or poor Mr. and Mrs. Hotckhiss, whose lives were completely upended after they lost their son.

My cousin is a deputy officer in Texas. He's said it on his own feed - when I show up only knowing there is an armed gunman, you could be standing out there wrapped in the flag and huddling over frightened children you're trying to protect. All I see is you waving a gun around.

That goes directly to the blogs point, I think.

They are really awful people. Perhaps they always were, but some corners our society that used to encourage it have now become rooms.

He gets no slack from me, Mala. My junior senator is a craven POS who would rather whore himself out to the NRA that do what his constituents want. Fuck that guy. If I were to meet him, there would be a rather obscene comment on my part about what does Wayne LaPierre do with his ejaculate when Rubio is fellating him.

A quote from the yesterday at the listening session:
So the other thing -- I really believe that if these cowards knew that the school was well-guarded, from the standpoint of having, pretty much, professionals with great training, I think they wouldn’t go into the school to start off with. I think it could very well solve your problem.

Your problem? YOUR problem?! THIS IS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY'S PROBLEM, SIR. AND YOU ARE THE FUCKING PRESIDENT.

Scoop, you have made the assumption that Wayne LaPierre's dutiful submissive bitch, Marco Rubio has any credibility. See below for my thoughts vis a vie the LaPierre-Rubio dynamic.

Since it CPAC time, I would like to make mention of someone who was disinvited to last year's fest, Milo! Check out his latest gig.

Funny how they dis-invited Dinesh D'ouchebag for attacking the students & families of Parkland, but the rest of the program is just as rude & disgusting.

Also, they really invited Nigel Farage & Marion LePen? I thought CPAC was a gathering of American reactionary blowhards not international neo-Nazi stars?

threatens to pull all ICE presence out of California to teach them a lesson

Okay, at first I thought "yeah okay whatever". Then I remembered that California has one of the WORLDS largest economies, which means a lot of international shipping. No ICE means no inspections of shipped international goods, which will KILL THE ENTIRE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY and probably cause trouble for other countries as well.
