The final stretch.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/06/2008 12:28:25

So it's our first Monday day of October. The McCain campaign has decided it's going to go after Barack Obama with the Ayers Story. Yes -- THAT Ayers Story, the one we dealt with during primary season. John MCCain and Sarah Palin are going to do everything they can to distract America from the economy. EVERYTHING. It's 'Kitchen Sink' time in Politics.

Problem is, The World Market may have something else to say about that.
Asian and European stock markets plunged Monday as government bank bailouts in the U.S. and Europe failed to alleviate fears that the global financial crisis would depress world economic growth.

Investors took scant comfort from Washington's passage of a US$700 billion plan to buy bad assets from banks and other institutions to shore up the financial industry on Friday because of the uncertainty still hanging over the details of the deal and the degree to which it will help.
This comes on top of a report that Wall Street may reject the bailout rescue. So, I - with my limited knowledge of the markets and the economy - have a feeling that we might see the market drop a tad today. The markets may very well drop below 10,000. I also think that John McCain will try everything he can to distract America from that. They are going to try to get America stirred up about Tony Rezko and William Ayers. (no 'official' word yet on the second coming of the Reverend Wright) My goodness it's a political trilogy rerising! It's Like Deja Vu all over again!

There is good news. Barack Obama, in our final month of the campaign is going to show America how John McCain was directly one of the people who brought us to this place in our economy. It's the fourth quarter defense folks. As tired as we all are of this multi-year campaign, it ain't over folks. Obama has put John McCain on offense.

John McCain's desire to create fake outrage and distract America from the real issues that they are concerned about won't work - not this time. Today at Noon, EST, the Obama Campaign is presenting a 13 minute documentary about John McCain and his Keating Five Scandal. Here is a preview:

One month to go folks, it won't be pretty, but Obama is showing that he IS fighting back. I suspect we will have some crazy plan to get the debate cancelled, John McCAin will lose his temper again, Sarah will read a fortune cookie and claim it's Foreign Policy, but Barack Obama will be cool, calm and pragmatic this week.

Now that is refreshing. 1 month. We can do this. Yes, We can.

:peace: and
Raine

From DCRTV -

McCain's Bro Calls NOVA "Communist Country" - 10/5 - From AP: Republican presidential candidate John McCain's brother made an apparent joke at a campaign rally this weekend that might not play well in parts of newly competitive Virginia. Joe McCain, speaking at an event in support of his brother, called two Democratic-leaning areas in Northern Virginia "communist country," according to a report on the Washington Post's website. "I've lived here for at least 10 years and before that about every third duty I was in either Arlington or Alexandria, up in communist country," Joe McCain said at an event in Loudoun County. Joe McCain then apologized, but the remark drew laughter at the event.....

You know, for a campaign that is calling Joe Biden to task for "living in the past", I think they're going to be really sorry they ever brought it up...

IT's fall break time at my school district, so I'm here at Casa Clintster listening to Steph for the first time in two months (not counting my Steph Bits subscription). I'm also planning on having a nice tub soak during RWW.

Will there be a talent portion on today's show?

Morning everybody! Sleepy today..... too much sitting in the sun yesterday in a football field! ;)

Did anybody catch 60 Minutes TV yesterday? Started late do to some train-wreck sport called (oddly enough) "foot"ball. Anywho, great piece on the financial crisis and the shadowy underworld created by all the deregulation. Catch the show if you can.

As for McCain and his negatives, lets not forget some of the other criminals he has been around, Ollie North who sold weapons to terrorists; G. Gordon Liddy, a felon; and the con man that stole money from people and claimed to have links with the Vatican - Ann Hathaways boyfriend/con man.

The link is having issues coming up, so let me put it here:

t's looking more and more likely that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will appear on ''Saturday Night Live'' -- to have some fun with Tina Fey.

As the comedian's impressions of the GOP vice presidential candidate draw laughs from Republicans and Democrats alike, a top honcho from the John McCain campaign tells me there's a debate going on about how to respond.

Some key McCain staffers are content with Palin joking about the "SNL" routines on the campaign trail -- as when she scribbled "I'm not Tina Fey" on a supporter's cell phone and said she'd dressed as Fey on Halloween. But others -- including the governor herself -- think a return punch on the NBC airwaves is what's needed.

I'm hearing some sort of Palin tweak of Fey's American Express commercials is in the works.

While next weekend's ''Saturday Night Live'' will be a rerun, it is possible Palin could appear Thursday on the first of NBC's ''Weekend Update'' specials in prime time.

Otherwise, the next orginal "SNL'' show will be broadcast Oct. 18, a little more than two weeks before the election.

Good Morning Ms. Jones. I actually did see that Segment on 60 minutes. it was really good and rather infuriating. I loved when Kroft said to the guy "But you are admitting to having caused this problem, why should you be trusted to make it better?" (or something like that.)

I have to see if there is a youtube of it.

I rarely link to articles at the Wall Street Journal, for two obvious reasons. First, despite having a fantastic news department its editorial page is nuttier than a peanut farm in Georgia. Second, the recent change of ownership to Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and my long-standing boycott of all things Fux Gnus.

However, once in a while that fantastic news crew sells me a magic bean.

Palin talks to Kristoff...

I pointed out that Obama surely had a closer connection to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright than to Ayers — and so, I asked, if Ayers is a legitimate issue, what about Reverend Wright?

She didn’t hesitate: “To tell you the truth, Bill, I don’t know why that association isn’t discussed more, because those were appalling things that that pastor had said about our great country, and to have sat in the pews for 20 years and listened to that — with, I don’t know, a sense of condoning it, I guess, because he didn’t get up and leave — to me, that does say something about character. But, you know, I guess that would be a John McCain call on whether he wants to bring that up.”

Now what is interesting, is that McCain supposedly said that Wright if off limits... I doubt it. They are all liars. More at teh particularly pukoriffic Kristol Column.

Bring it Sarah... you have some serious pastor issues yerself, y' betcha.

I had to read it again... basically they are telling people to simply drop dead if you can't afford it.

Talking to people was mostly easier, and there seemed to be so much more enthusiasm both for those of us who were canvassing and those we talked to. And I even recruited two (possibly three) more people to volunteer.

I do believe the First Television Station was in Albany New York... IT was (and still i) WRGB. I went on air in 1928.

That's correct. New York City got its first TV stations in 1941 when WNBT (now WNBC) and WCBS-TV went on the air and WABD (now WNYW) went on the air in 1944. Although all the stations operated on very limited schedules during WWII and didn't really start full broadcasting schedules until after the war was over.

By 1948, both New York City and Los Angeles already had 7 TV stations while many parts of the country still didn't yet have any TV stations which resulted in a 4-year freeze on new allocations while the frequencies were set up in order to guarantee TV service across the country.

Regarding TV, I checked our stations. WBZ went on the air in 1948 as the first commercial TV station in New England. Still going strong, lo all these years later.

And most of you on the East Coast can pick up WBZ 1030am on a clear night; that's been on the air since 1921. Wiki still has it listed at 50,000 watts, but I know it's up to 100,000 these days; I've heard it as far away as New Brunswick and astonishingly, West Palm Beach, Florida.

Dude - you're never going to lose weight if you keep making excuses for yourself. The hardest part is breaking old habits and creating new better habits (believe me I know - I am trying to get in the habit of exercising more. I even put a reminder on my Outlook program to remind me every day, and somehow screwed that up).

Remember - You're not doing this to make the doctor happy, you're not doing this to make you're friends happy, you're doing this for your own health, and so you can get more enjoyment out of life (after you lose the weight of course). That means packing a healthy lunch for work instead of getting vendor machine food (or fast food), walking for 1/2 hour before you go to work, etc.

I know I do this every time you report your progress and you're probably getting sick of it, but you can be your own worst enemy. I know from experience.

Kinda amazing how AM signals travel so far in good weather huh?

Oh yah and I found it!

...You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning..

And that, I think, was the handle — that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply PREVAIL. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave...

- Hunter S. Thompson, "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas"

Take out the altered state of mind that this was originally written in and replace it with a true, heavy sense that things are not going well and we ALL need to do SOMETHING BIG TO FIX IT and yeah that about sums up the feeling out there right now.

WBZ was the first TV station and WNAC (now WHDH) in Boston and WNHC (now WTNH) in New Haven signed on within a few months later.

Here are the channel lists from the pre-national TV Guide editions in my collection.

New York Edition;

2-WCBS (CBS)

4-WNBT (NBC)

5-WABD (Dumont)

6-WNHC (CBS, NBC, ABC, Dumont) New Haven (moved to channel 8 in 1954)

7-WJZ (ABC)

9-WOR (independent)

11-WPIX (independent)

13-WATV (independent) Newark

New England Edition (1951 is the earliest copy)

4-WBZ (NBC) Boston

7-WNAC (CBS, ABC, Dumont) Boston

11-WJAR (NBC, CBS, ABC, Dumont) Providence (moved to channel 10 in 1953)

WNHC was added to the New England edition listings as well in 1952.

WOR, WPIX, and WATV all went on the air in 1948. Channel 13 did go off the air for several months in early 1962 when it was transitioning from a commercial independent to an educational station.

And Channel 11's been running The Honeymooners as a regular part of the schedule since 1959. Hell, even Channel 5 stopped running I Love Lucy in 1999.

The thing that makes me sad is that in all likelihood - Obama will be a one term president. Like Carter -- dealt a very bad "hand." And Obama is honest, smart and patriotic enough to do those necessary things that will help us prosper in the long run, but hurt him politically in a reelection campaign.

One of the big topics of discussion at UNN is the following: Jeff Farias has been fired from Nova M. It was not a a good day for fans of progressive talk in Phoenix, but I hope that 1480 KPHX and Nova M Radio wil be going strong for many years to come.
Now that REALLY sux. I loved Farius.

What the hell is going on down there?

I am not sure, but here is the offical statement on the front of

http://www.1480kphx.com/

The Progressive Community has come to depend on the few liberal media outlets we have for critical information in desperately critical times. The Nova M Radio Network is by far the most valuable player in the progressive talk movement today. Lead by the powerful voices of Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes, Nova M will continue to light the way back to true democracy with the best in radio talk/journalism.

We are saddened by the departure of Jeff Farias from the network. Jeff conducted his last show for Nova M last Friday (10-3-08). This was Jeff’s choice. The Nova M Family and listeners wish him the best.

The occupation of Iraq, global warming, the looting of the national treasury, the foreclosure crisis and the disastrous politics of the Bush Regime, command the attention of every true Progressive in this country at this moment. Rest assured NOVA M will be there to help analyze and expose the rhetoric of the right with the best talent we can bring to radio.

Thank you for continuing to support us.

I guess the truth will come ut.

FCC lists WBZ at 50kW, I don't think they were ever authorized for a higher power. I know there were a select few stations that ran 100kW or more (WLW once ran 500kW in the '30s) years ago, but I think now the only ones doing that are in Mexico. The reason 'BZ's signal is so good is that their antenna is in a salt marsh, an almost perfect ground, where other stations have to compromise with miles of grounding wires buried under ground.

Until just a few years ago, their first 50kW transmitter building was just down the road from me.

Though in 1928 it was known as W2XB and used a purely mechanical system.

Before I had cable, I used to like DXing on my TV and enjoyed the moments when I would get stations anywhere between Boston and Norfolk, VA on my black-and-white TV even with just rabbit ears. I got into the novelty into watching station promos and even finding the odd show that wasn't airing on New York TV. And even in the early days of cable, the novelty for me was seeing WTBS plus the programming from Pennsylvania and Boston that was carried on the cable system. In my younger geekier days that was an even bigger novelty than having HBO.

And now because of digital transition, copyright issues, syndex, and the fact that newer TV's don't get as good reception, those days have long past. In recent years, the closest I got was when I had the distant networks and superstations on the satellite dish. Ah, good times.

No, I am talking about the re-porpoising of Faneuil Hall as a shopping/historic destination in the 80s. See, when I was a young Mondo, I worked for an outfit called Chesapeake Knife and Tool, which had an outpost in Boston at Faneuil Hall. It also had locations in the Inner Harbor and the Old Post Office Building in DC. Historic, yet all the wonderful things tourists like. Same thing was done to Union Station in DC too.

Quincy Market was much more interesting in the 80s when actual stores were there. It's been taken over by the chains now, it's hardly better than a suburban mall these days. Although it's still in a winner location on the waterfront, and the food is far better than anything you'd get in a mall.

It's a huge tourist draw, and because of the location, it's still a big lunching area for the locals, too.

Much like what is technically called Harbor Place at the Inner Harbor. AKA Charm City's Inner Harbor. I've not been there in years. It used to have a bunch of charming, interesting local bidnesses that were very tourist oriented. Most of these destination historical renovations haven't panned out. There used to be one in Norfolk that in the mid 80s was well on it's way to being a white elephant. Kinda like the Landing is here. They want all this stuff to happen downtown, but there is no easy way to get downtown except by car. After about six in the evening, downtown Jacksonville is ghost town.
