Happy Spring
Author: BobR    Date: 03/20/2019 12:52:23

Spring has sprung, the grass has rizz
I wonder where the birdies is?
The birds is on the wing
On the wing? - well that's absurd
I thought the wings was on the bird?

Yes, today is the first day of spring. It's been a cold rainy/snowy 6 weeks since groundhog day. In this neck of the woods, it's sunny and - while not exactly warm - warmer than it was several weeks ago. Our yard is actually dry.

Elsewhere in the country (and the world), weather has not been quite so nice recently. A powerful storm (a bomb cyclone, they called it) dropped an incredible amount of rain on the midwest. That - along with snow melt and ice dams - has caused major flooding. Even an Air Force base in Nebraska was flooded.

A powerful cyclone hit the southeastern African country of Mozambique last week, devastating the country. So far, 200 have been reported dead, but that count is expected to rise, as there are still hundreds missing.

Extreme and unusual weather (also known as global climate change) has been predicted for years (even decades) as a result of global warming. Yes, that also means colder-than-normal (or snowier) winters, as arctic air finds its way much further south than it should. Every year, it seems we're setting new weather records, with record high temperatures outpacing record lows 2 to 1.

This is the sort of crisis that demands informed strong leadership to work with other countries to try to stop the warming trends. Unfortunately, we have pResident tRump sitting in the White House. Instead of addressing this real emergency, he is doing his best to discredit the science:
The Trump administration has already purged information about climate change from government websites, gagged federal experts and attempted to end funding for climate change programmes.

Now a group of hardcore climate change deniers and contrarians linked to the administration is organising a petition in support of a new panel being set up by the National Security Council to promote an alternative official explanation for climate change.

The panel will consist of scientists who do not accept the overwhelming scientific evidence that rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are behind climate change and its impacts.

It should come as no surprise that these deniers are funded by Big Oil. What's sad is that tRump is so easily manipulated by them, to the detriment of all. Of course - that will be the defining characteristic of his 4 years occupying the White House - a fool easily manipulated by appealing to his ego.

Happy Vernal equinox indeed.
