Good morning.

This is the last American plane out of Afghanistan.

While not nearly as dramatic as the photo of the last helicopter leaving Saigon, it's still a sobering thought.

I counted the days today. From October 7, 2001 all the way up to yesterday is a grand total of 7,268 days we've been in this quagmire. It has been called the longest war in American history, but only perhaps because Vietnam is even more nebulous and convoluted - there's no real "start" and "end" dates there.

In any case, we leave Afghanistan to an uncertain future. Whatever happens there may or may not spill out onto the rest of the world. But what we have done is lay the groundwork there for decades, or even centuries of revenge attacks on the West.

Was it worth it?

As of today, it appears that the United States is luckier than our Cold War counterpart. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979; they found it no easier to conquer than we did. They were there for nine years vs. our twenty. But just two years after the Red Army withdrew, the entire Soviet system collapsed. One can only wonder where we will be in two years ourselves.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I fear that we accomplished little of good in Afghanistan for the last 20 years that will last beyond the end of this war. Perhaps some Afghans will have a taste for freedom and stand for their rights. However, I think that we will have historians wonder why we did not leave sooner.

The Afghan War is an example of how a policy can continue through multiple administrations. Leaving Afghanistan was not easy but I think that it was the right thing to do. I doubt that we would see a different outcome if we had stayed for another generation. Ultimately, few Afghans had faith in the last government before the Taliban and many knew that a Taliban takeover was just a matter of time after TFG's treaty to which the Afghan government was not even a party.

Just getting to the blog. I am going to post two familiar quotes that I think best summarize the last 20 years, and the next 60:

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”
― Dwight D. Eisenhower

I can't find the exact quote for the 2nd one, but it's something like "The war isn't over until the last tortured veteran soul passes in his sleep"
