Who could have seen this one coming?
A new commission examining waste and corruption in wartime contracts is getting a grim report from government watchdogs who say poor planning, weak oversight and greed combined to soak U.S. taxpayers and undermine American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Stuart Bowen, the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, says U.S. taxpayers have paid nearly $51 billion for a wide array of projects in Iraq — from training the Iraqi army and police to rebuilding the country's oil, electric, justice, health and transportation sectors.

Some of these projects succeeded, Bowen informed the Wartime Contracting Commission at its first public hearing, according to his written testimony, but many did not. Violence in Iraq along with constant friction between U.S. officials in Washington and Baghdad were also major factors that undercut progress.

The U.S. government "was neither prepared for nor able to respond quickly to the ever-changing demands" of stabilizing Iraq and then rebuilding it, Bowen said in his written testimony. "For the last six years we have been on a steep learning curve."

A lengthy study by Bowen's office, "Hard Lessons: The Iraq Reconstruction Experience," reviews the problems in an effort the Bush administration initially thought would cost $2.4 billion.

Overall, the Pentagon, State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development have paid contractors more than $100 billion since 2003 for goods and services to support war operations and rebuilding projects in Iraq and Afghanistan.
While I appreciate the desire for the new administration to look forward, this kind of ongoing waste needs to be addressed. These contractors are still operating in Iraq and Afghanistan, with little or no oversight. That is your free market republicanism for you, no regulations, no oversight.

100 billion dollars to contractors, couple that with the statistics our own TriSec gives us every Tuesday. Today it's at $593,482,761,609. My Goodness, that is almost 2/3 of the entire economic Package being bandied about in DC these past few weeks. Republicans think restoring the National Mall is wasteful? Are you kidding me? We are still bleeding Money into a rabbit hole in Iraq, and they think family planning is excessive? With '154 open criminal investigations into allegations of bribery, conflicts of interest, defective products, bid rigging and theft stemming from the wars', I personally can't NOT look back. The money that has been wasted and stolen is just astounding.

People need to be held accountable for this theft. I don't want to listen to Republicans telling the rest of the country about how to be fiscally responsible, then they let this abysmal mess happen in the first place.

It's time to pull contracts, put the thieves in jail and stop the bleeding. Personally I believe that money could be put to better use - what they can still find of it.

:peace: and
Raine

Further proof that the "free market" the Republicans espouse does not work.

When I worked for a military contractor in the early 80's, it was just after the "space shuttle scandal", and EVERYONE had to account for which product they were working on and how much time they were working on it on their timecards. Reagan was the president at the time.

A short descrption of this is buried deep in here:

The second weird thing was that recently Rockwell had been "suspended"

from selling stuff to the military due to incidents of time card fraud

in Texas, and management was EXTREMELY OBSESSIVE about having us fill

out time cards correctly. We had to attend mandatory training

sessions. But nobody was concerned about what work we did, with what

goals and milestones, or how fast, on what schedule, or how effective

or efficient we were. That's because Rockwell sold our time to the

government with a markup, and the longer we took, the more they made.

(That's where "cost overruns" come from.)

I think TriSec would enjoy reading this (here's part 2)

How is THIS not sedition?

RUSH: Hey, Bob? The only thing bipartisan was the people who voted against it. The American people do want to see their economy rebound. It's just it's not going to happen with your plan. And one thing, Mr. Gibbs -- and I understand you're the best press secretary they ever had up there. That's what the Drive-Bys told us before you got the gig, I understand that, but you "don't want leaders from either party listening to just one person rather than listening to millions of voices." Don't you understand, Mr. Gibbs? Certainly by now you do. My voice is the voice of millions of God-fearing American conservatives. That's why I'm listened to. It's because my voice equals millions. It isn't just me. I'm not going it alone here. I have an army. I'm the general, but I have an army.

and tell me, WHY is he allowed to be aired on Armed forces Radio?

Stewart Parnell, president of Peanut Corp. of America, based in Lynchburg, Va., was first appointed to the USDA’s Peanut Standards Board in July 2005 and was reappointed in October for a second term that runs until June 2011, according to the USDA.

I said it last week; it's time for a two-tier system again. The GOP and their supporters can buy from deregulated free-market suppliers. After they get sick and die, they won't buy anymore products, and the plant will go out of business, thus solving the problem the way they want it done.

The rest of us can buy things from regulated and inspected factories.

Hehe here's one I can handle, courtesy of my dabbling in Wicca.. The cross-quarters are normally the last day of the month following (or more accurately the first day of the month before) an equinox or solstice month. The dates by the gregorian calendar would be Feb 1/2, May 1, August 1 and November 1. Though to be accurate, the dates should actually change according to the lunar calendar.

In Wicca and the pagan religions of old these dates along with the equinox & solstice days marked festivals to nature or to various goddesses. Which leads to MY bonus points question - without looking it up can you give either the common or Wiccan names for these eight festivals?

Raine, excellent post!! I think one thing that we should remember that many of the duties of the contractors -- from safeguarding State Department personnel to providing meals -- at one time was done by the military for much less cost. So, let's get rid of contractors save where they are absolutely necessary. (Increasing Haliburton's profits is not a necessity.)

RFK Jr. had seats on the podium with the President, but he didn't use them; instead he went out into the crowd to sit with his kids in the "cheap seats"....he's got an interesting story to tell. (It's right in the first 10 minutes of the show.)

I was particularly amused by his account of Marine One flying down the mall. I didn't realize it at the time, but the helo came from the Capitol...apparently they overflew the crowd intentionally just to see how big it was.

[And given the 'Ministry of Truth' treatment underway on the Bush years, it's not hard for me to imagine somebody in the chopper saying "See Mr. President? They love you so much they all came to say goodbye!"]

:on intercom from contagious ward: :feeble: Afternoon everybody. I, Mondo am back from the urgent care and the Publix. I have strep. So, I got my prescription for the 500 mg amoxicillian filled for free. I think I'm going back to bed now.

GAH! STREP!!!????!!!!

:sprint:

My worst ills over the past 15 years or so have been bouts with strep...last time I was down for ten days.

Oh wait.. yeah and the new Star Trek prequel one too.

What. The. Fuck. @ Hayden. Christensen. As. Kirk.

Perhaps they wanted to get away from a hammy actor and went with wooden instead.

: scans : Wooden? That is an insult to trees, Bob. I don't know what to call it, what is worse than wooden?

XM's America Left channel has tweaked their schedule this week. The changes are somewhat helpful.

Rachel Maddow is now on at 5 AM where the show is fed out now.

They now air all three hours of Stephanie Miller beginning at 9 AM.

With Rachel Maddow now in the morning, Thom Hartmann's show is now at 6 PM and they all three hours. (Sirius Left still carries the first hour live).

And as a result, Mike Malloy is now aired live on XM from 9-Midnight (same as Sirius).

The weekend lineup now just looks like repeats of the weekday shows and the dropping of weekend Air America shows. At least WWRL here does air Ring of Fire and Radio Nation.

Ohh Sorry! I was testing. My bad! I was testing to see if my posted audiocons were showing for me. No, still aren't. I am glad you can see 'em.

There's Boston for ya. All the Suck of the Patriots and Red Sox has now rubbed off on the Eagles.

Ah well...at least it's Northeastern. Never been much of a fan, but it's my Alma Mater of a sort. (EMT program, 1993)

Tri, your pessimism never fails to bring a smile to my face.
