Bush Kills Children's health care-- AGAIN...
Author: Raine    Date: 12/13/2007 13:06:44

Sometimes it seems like Groundhog Day.
Bush vetoed the second passing of the SCHIP bill. HE did it in private, where he would not have to be a man and face people when he did this disgusting act. From The AP:

...It was Bush's seventh veto in seven years — all but one coming since Democrats took control of Congress in January. Wednesday was the deadline for Bush to act or let the bill become law....

The bill Bush vetoed would have increased federal funding for SCHIP by $35 billion over five years, to add an estimated 4 million people to the program that provides insurance coverage for children from families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private insurance. The joint federal-state program currently provides benefits to roughly 6 million people, mostly children.

A major point of contention with the White House was Bush's demand that nearly all poor children eligible for the program be found and enrolled before any in slightly higher-income families could be covered. He originally proposed adding $5 billion to the program over five years but later said he was willing to go higher as long as his conditions were met.

...Of the 43 million people nationwide who lack health insurance, more than 6 million are under 18 years old. That's more than 9 percent of all children.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said the House will take up the extension question Thursday in a bill that also will make adjustments to Medicare.

"We'll obviously need to put additional money" into the children's health insurance program, Hoyer said, because several states say they will have to remove recipients from their rolls if the current funding level continues into next year.

So, If no extension is done to this program, the current existing program will fold... leaving states to have to pay for this on their own. States Rights you say? Is this what Republicans wanted when they called for more states rights? The right to let it's citizens go without Healthcare? The right to go further in debt? The right to choose between Oil or Food or medicine?

Well I hope that those children who live in poorer states understand that it won't be the Grinch that they need be concerned with this year, it will be the Bush who stole healthcare from 9 percent of the children in America. Is this what the republican party stands for? All of the candidates say they were against SCHIP. It seems to me that there is a true lack of compassion for our people, our children with this party. (Please note, I must commend those people who DID pass this bill in the House and the Senate, I only wish their were more who took a stand for Americans.)

According to the White house. if congress doesn't pass the multibillion dollar Iraq War funding bill, upwards of 300,00 (THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND) people in government will be laid off. That included 200,000 from the pentagon and another 100,000 civilian sector military jobs.

The Iraq war is not part of the federal budget, it is paid for by borrowing money America simply does not have, and SCHIP? It is a PAY-GO plan. Without it, it will leave states to fend for themselves. And Children will die... but instead, we have a president trying to scare Americans by threatening Pink slips for a war that has nothing to do with their paychecks. We have a president who has threatened nuclear war with Iran, while never even reading the NIE. We have a president who outsourced our war with no bid contracts, no over sight and no accountability... But we can't have a program that insures children that is paid for without putting our country in debt. Makes perfect sense.

The president is a bully to workers, to children and to the American people. This current crop of Republicans candidates are no different. Why anyone would want to attach themselves to this breed of republicanism is beyond me, It is neither fiscally nor socially conservative. It is pure radical unbridled corporatism that puts profits over people and destroys any social safety net we may have once had. It isn't what FDR talking about when he mentioned the Four Freedoms...

Freedom of speech and expression
Freedom of every person to worship in his own way
Freedom from want
Freedom from fear

So, come on inside, coffee is on. We have some Lady Grey tea as well...

Let's do this day full and loud and proud!
:peace: and

Raine

I think Bush is winning.

This morning, I was freaked out by a car following me.

It was a big, black, Dodge Charger, of the kind that is being favored by more and more police departments around the country. (Photo below)

My route to work is a convoluted one, down mostly residential streets bypassing in turn Main Street, Watertown Square, Watertown High School, and a busy intersection on Mount Auburn Street.

Since my route is so out of the way, I noticed this car following me at a respectful distance, turn-for-turn, for over half of my commute.

But when we did finally go in different directions, it was a civilian woman driving it.

Thanks, George. I sure do feel safer now. Why else would a black car be following me if it wasn't your minions?

I have been followed too... If it is in my head or or for real I don't care... this is what this administration has done to me. :F*uckin' Fred*

Comment by BobR on 12/13/2007 13:51:18
Although it's hard to tell looking in a rear-view mirror, you can usually tell a government-issue car because it has no extras on it. No decorative trim, no pinstripes, no dealer decals, no fancy wheel covers, no bumber stickers or stickers on the windows.

Understood that it's more difficult to detect that when the car is behind you.

You could always pull over and see what the following car does - although that could have unintended consequences:

My brother-in-law tells the story of being behind a car with a couple kids that were making faces at him. As he continued to drive, the car in front kept turning the way he was going. In fact, the car suddenly turned into his neighborhood, and then pulled into his driveway.

As my brother-in-law pulled into his driveway behind the car, the woman driver jumped out and yelled "WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME??".

My brother-in-law simply pulled out his garage door opener and opened the garage door. The woman turned bright red, apologized, and left.

True Story.

Steph you are not Gen X.

Comment by wickedpam on 12/13/2007 15:16:46
Generation X is a term used to describe generations in many countries around the world which were born between 1965 and 1980. The exact demographic boundaries of Generation X are not well defined, depending on who is using the term, where and when. The term is used in demography, the social sciences, and marketing, though it is most often used in popular culture. The generation's influence over pop culture began in the 1980s and may have peaked in the 1990s.[citation needed]

you know? I was just thinking that the more I think about this issue, the more it pisses me off. These guys get up there and pontificate about the "Sanctity of Life," but think nothing of popping a cap in a living creatures ass. Yes, I know they are animals. And, in their mind an animal is not the same as a baby. But, an animal is, objectively, a living creature. They do feel pain, etc. And, somehow I doubt GOD would approve of killing a living creature.

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas is a Christmas novelty song written by John Coctoasten and performed by Gayla Peevey (11 years old at the time) in 1953. According to legend, she was a regional child star of the Oklahoma City area. This 1953 hit was recorded as a fund-raiser to bring the city zoo a hippo. When released nationally by Columbia Records the song shot to the top of the charts, and the city zoo got a baby hippo named Matilda.

It is a Dr. Demento Christmas staple, and is currently available on Dr. Demento's The Greatest Novelty Records of All Time Vol. 6: Christmas.

The B-side of the original 78 featured the song "Are my Ears on Straight?"

It's not bad - I like it in the bottle better, but it's a gimmick for the nightclubs - they can sell those little cans and bottle (POP) for around $10 a shot and they only cost about $3 for the account to buy.

there is some truly inventive stuff out there these days. I'm liking a lot of the trip-hop and downtempo treatments of some of the classics, and there are some very cool calliope versions of things that really shouldn't be played on a calliope.

More of a novelty thing, I know, but intersting nonetheless.

And I gather you've never heard Miles Davis' "Blue Xmas"? It's long out of print, but if you can get one, it's a masterwork of dark Christmas angst.

I don't know if it's Christmas music or not, but Eric Jackson of WGBH-FM has played Duke Ellington's concerts of Sacred Music on Christmas week for the past 25 years or so. Problems with "Come Sunday" may be addressed directly to the Supreme Being, lest he smite you with His Noodly Appengage.

Thought he handled that with grace and decorum. I think they all like each other, and I think they pretty much respect each other.

Alright, once more unto the breach, dear friends!

A co-worker is reporting speeds in the 4-5mph range on Arsenal/Main street heading home. (Yes, it just took her an hour to go 4 miles.)

I do have an alternate, and it looks like I just need to go 1/2 block eastbound to get into the residential neighborhood and wallow home.

I'll be back online later....but if you don't hear from me send out the dogs!

I am here. It only took me 55 minutes to get to work. It has changed over to rain here.

Randi did make one good point today. Why was Dennis Kucinich excluded from the Democratic Debate for not having a campaign office when Alan Keyes was allowed in the Republican debate and he only has one staffer for his whole campaign.

I think Kucinich and Gravel would have added to the debate. :)

I have been doing some research on this, and from what people are saying is that Dennis while he does have one full time volunteer staffer there, he has only been to Iowa 15 times, and basically has chosen not to campaign there. This makes sense actually since it was a state debate. Now as far as Keyes... he did rent an office, but I have not been able to confirm how much time he has spent in Iowa campaigning.

Comment by livingonli on 12/13/2007 22:21:39
Maybe Alan Keyes rented a roadside farm stand for his campaign.

The TriSec has landed.

Almost 2 hours to go 4 miles. But there was an excuse, the only road that leads to my house had a 5-car accident on it and was entirely shut down. I sat without moving for 45 minutes. There was no way around it.

Well, this is the first significant snowfall in what, 3 winters around here? Folks forget...

The accident was at a four-way intersection, the entrance to my complex, the main street crossing it, and the entrance to the strip mall with the CVS and Dunk's.

A white cargo van had its entire side stove in, and it looked like it was hit hard enough to be spun around. Another car was on a flatbed, and 3 others with damage were sitting by the side of the road when I finally passed through.

The hell of it is, that is my alternate route down secondary roads. I think I would have been better off had I stuck to Main Street.

:kickcan:

But of course, I am completely insane. Boy Scout Troop 250 has not cancelled this weekend's trip yet, and the Webelos were invited. I was able to find most of my expedition gear and I'm packing as we speak. (Yes, your loyal TriSec is hardcore. A foot of snow and temps in the 20s is mild compared to other trips I've been on, and it is a cabin trip at a local scout camp.)

Oh, and I had an epiphany earlier this evening about the magic Mormon underwear..

I have a friend, King Spence of Zarahemla, in the micronational world. He's a Mormon. (and voting for Mitt, alas.)

Danny Ainge of the Boston Celtics is a Mormon. (bet that was fun in the locker room in his playing days.)

Donny and Marie Osmond...'nuff said.

Steve Young, former NFL quaterback (see Danny Ainge)

Butch Cassidy (yes, that one. Magic underpants didn't help him much there, hmm?)

Glenn Beck, Billy Barty, Gladys Knight...

And Medal of Honor Recipient Bernard Fisher (who may have benefitted from said underpants.)

There are more.

Why, the mind just reels!
