Are we here again?

Good Morning.

I'm pretty sure most of us on this blog lived through the 80s. A disastrous pandemic swept through a narrow subset of society those four decades ago now. Remember this?

The United States has just suffered it's first death from the growing Coronavirus threat. I'm also reading of some mysterious cases that are sprouting up on the West coast (California and Oregon so far) that are not related to any sort of travel or exposure to high-risk individuals.

So what does our national leadership do about this? Why, declare it a hoax!

President Donald Trump said Friday that Democrats are using the virulent coronavirus as a “hoax” to damage him and his administration.

“The Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus,” he said from a campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina.

“One of my people came up to me and said ‘Mr. President they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia. That didn’t work out too well.’ They couldn’t do it. They tried the impeachment hoax that was on a perfect conversation,” he continued.

“This is their new hoax,” he said, referring to the coronavirus.

The disease, which originated in Wuhan, China, has now killed more than 2,800 people worldwide and infected more than 80,000. The latest reports from the World Health Organization show the pace of new cases in China slowing, but jumping in South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Iran.

In the U.S., the Santa Clara Public Health Department announced a third case of coronavirus in the county Friday evening. The announcement brings the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in California to 10 and the total number of cases in the U.S. to 63, most of which were passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship and evacuees from Wuhan.

“We are magnificently organized with the best professionals in the world,” Trump said of the administration’s preparations to help contain the spread of the virus.

Remember though, every day is opposite day under the Trump "administration", so if we are magnificently organized, that probably means he doesn't have a flippin' clue.

Of course, the mental midgets that voted for him are lining up in lockstep, at least on the Book of Face. If you're so certain, then when are you planning to visit Wuhan?

It's very clear that the division of the "United" States is accelerating with each passing day. I wonder if the election of 2020 could be our last? It's actually not without precedent, but we've got to go back to another national crisis 160 years ago.

The election of 1860 was no less a seminal moment than the election of 2020 is shaping up to be. Half the country disagreed with the other half over the treatment of their fellow man. A candidate elected to destroy that 'peculiar institution' prompted half the country to secede and take up arms in order to preserve their way of life.

Of course they failed, but they were on the wrong side of history. Are we any different today?

If the election of 2020 gives us a candidate that continues to destroy everything that makes us "The United States of America", will even one quarter of the country have the wherewithal to stand up for what is right? It is Godwin, but I can't help but look at Germany's descent into hell almost a century ago now. People looked the other way and let it happen. This is where we are.
