Good Morning.

It's a very quiet day on the veteran's front. Ordinarily, I'd categorize that as a good thing, but I'm afraid there may be something deeper at work here.

Destroying the village
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/09/2019 10:58:34

On February 7, 1968, American bombs, rockets and napalm obliterated much of the South Vietnamese town of Ben Tre — killing hundreds of civilians who lived there.

Later that day, an unidentified American officer gave Associated Press reporter Peter Arnett a memorable explanation for the destruction.

Arnett used it in the opening of the story he wrote:

“It became necessary to destroy the town to save it,” a U.S. major said Wednesday. He was talking about the grim decision that allied commanders made when Viet Cong attackers overran most of this Mekong Delta city 45 miles southwest of Saigon. They decided that regardless of civilian casualties they must bomb and shell the once placid river city of 35,000 to rout the Viet Cong forces.

The Constitution on Life Support

In years past, those in control of Congress would be sympathetic to a president of their own party. Since 9/11/2001, the powers of the Executive Branch have increased in fits and starts, as Congress finds ways to get around members of the opposition party. As a result, the concept of the "Unitary Executive" has crept closer to reality, with presidents increasing their power and taking actions previous presidents could only dream of.

In the hands of a level-headed, patriotic, thoughtful, considered, and intelligent president, that kind of power is generally wielded sparingly and only when absolutely required. Considering the current occupant of the White House - none of those adjectives apply. It's a scary point in our country's history, and all eyes are on the Republicans in Congress, wondering what it's going to take for them to reel in pResident tRump.

Good Morning.

Let's talk cancer this morning. We all know somebody who's had it, or may even be battling it as we speak. When I was diagnosed myself, I was more mystified than anything else, but as time went on I discovered a tenuous link to many of my friends. In the years after my diagnosis, about a half-dozen of us that had worked at LL Bean in Burlington, MA all had similar diagnoses. Our store is located on a former Superfund site, and to this day somebody still opens the manhole in front of the store to "test" for something. What it is, I never found out, but it's enough of a coincidence for me to remain curious at least, to this day.

It's Monday and I am still reeling from the insanity that came out of C-PAC on Saturday.

Remember when Obama called Kanye a "Jackass" off the record and it was leaked to the public? Good times.

Talkin' Trump

Good Morning.

Let's have an etymology lesson today.

Donald Trump became prevalent to most of us back in the 1980s. But the word trump has a longer history.
