Falling Down a Rabbit Hole Friday
Author: wickedpam    Date: 03/16/2018 13:00:52

We've all done it. We've all stumbled across something on the internet that once we get a taste of it we want more and subsequently fallen down one of those pesky rabbit holes.

Russian Roulette
Author: BobR    Date: 2018-03-15 13:03:44

It seems like something out of James Bond movie - a former Russian spy (and his daughter) were poisoned in London. It turns out it was done via a very lethal nerve gas, and British prime minister Theresa May is not having it:
Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain expelled 23 Russian diplomats on Wednesday over the poisoning of a former Russian spy on British soil, raising tensions between the two countries to a level not seen since the heights of the Cold War. She vowed to crack down on Russian spies, corrupt elites and ill-gotten wealth in Britain.

Her statement to Parliament came after Moscow rejected a British deadline for Russia to explain itself over this month’s attack on the former spy, Sergei V. Skripal, and his daughter.

Good Morning.

We're holed up here in the AAV Bunker. There's chips, salsa, stew fixins, and lots of good Bourbon for the day.

On to the news at hand.

Happy Monday.

Happy Monday? I scoured all around and there is too much to focus on any one thing. I am mesmerized at the utter stupidity of the Secretary of Education. (I am befuddled at the corruption of her brother Erik.) Also,

Good Morning.

Some months ago now, my aunt sold our ancestral home in Saugus and decamped for "God's Waiting Room" in Southern Florida. I have not set foot in my hometown since the day we left the house for good.

But nevertheless - we pocketed a tidy sum from the transaction (to the tune that a significant portion of Javi's college will be paid for, cash on the barrelhead) and we were able to instantly erase the mountain of debt we had been pecking away at since the Great Recession.

From Outrage to Action

There has been a sense that - for whatever reason - the school shooting in Florida was somehow a tipping point in the national debate on gun violence, gun culture, and the laws which govern purchasing and owning firearms. After the Sandy Hook massacre, I think America was too shocked, too grief-stricken to mobilize in a meaningful way (perhaps it was because of "gun-grabbing" President Obama in the White House). This time it's definitely different. The kids who died and those who survived are on the cusp of adulthood, and have been very eloquent in their descriptions of the horrors, and their desire to effect a change.

After some fits and starts, the FL legislature passed a bill yesterday that addresses some of the issues that lead to these types of school shootings. Some are complaining it is weak tea, but in a state known for its lax gun laws, the changes included are definitely a step in the right direction:

No chaos, Your the Chaos!
Author: Raine    Date: 03/07/2018 14:01:45

Yesterday he tweeted this out:
The new Fake News narrative is that there is CHAOS in the White House. Wrong! People will always come & go, and I want strong dialogue before making a final decision. I still have some people that I want to change (always seeking perfection). There is no Chaos, only great Energy!

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit
Author: TriSec    Date: 03/06/2018 10:40:48

Good Morning.

I’ve been pondering the Bill of Rights recently. Ever since the events of 14 February, many have chosen to hide behind that marvelous prose as some kind of God-Given right.
I was particularly galled by the recent statement of Wayne LaPierre that the second amendment was given to Americans by God as "our American birthright."
