Today feels a bit like a red panda day. We need a break from the awful for just a few hours. A cleansing breath.

Arm the Teachers?
Author: BobR    Date: 02/22/2018 19:20:53

Republicans and gun-lovers (certainly not mutually exclusive) have - once again - put forth the absurd notion that the solution to gun violence at our schools is to add more guns to the mix. To most people, the notion is absurd, but since they seem to be serious about it, let's have a quick rundown on why that is such a spectacularly bad solution. Disclaimer - these aren't necessarily all my original ideas - thanks social media!

The Truth is Out There - Somewhere...

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." - Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects

There's a saying we on the left have used in the past that goes: "You are entitled to your own opinions. You are not entitled to your own facts". The notion is that truth is absolute, despite one's political leanings. It seems like decades ago when TV news programs and newspapers reported facts, and that was what the general populace used to formulate their opinions. There were ideological differences as to what those facts meant, but everyone started with the same base set of information.

Sure, there were paranoid conspiracy peddlers, distributing leaflets looking like they were hastily printed in a college dorm, or broadcasting on late night AM stations. They were considered amusing entertainment by most.

That all seems so quaint.

I'm angry. I am angry about guns, lies, inaction, and meanness.

Ask a Vet

Good Morning.

An early start here at AAV. By the time you read this, Javi and I should be nearing Penn Station in NYC for a whirlwind trip.

In some ways, this is a pilgrimage for your AAV staff. This trip was actually Javi's idea, but I've been putting it off and deflecting it for over a year.

Javi specifically wanted to go to New York to see the 9/11 museum.

He was only a month old when it happened, so he has no living memory of the event. For the rest of us, of course we'll still remember as we draw our last breaths. I do not know what to expect...is it going to be traumatic? cathartic? Or will it make me mad all over again?

Velveeta is not really sure what to do today. The pain of yet another mass shooting is sticking in her throat like a chicken bone on a spoon leaving her at a loss for words.

Generations

Good Morning.

America is still young enough that we measure our history in familial terms. It's still not uncommon to find folks that can trace historic events back to their grandparents, or great-grandparents having lived through it.

At Ask A Vet, we're starting to look at war in those terms. A young soldier that went over the berm in 1991 could now be watching his son or daughter overseas for the first, second, third, or multiple times.

That son or daughter, if they were there in 2003, could now be looking at children nearing the end of their high-school careers, and wondering what will become of them if they enlist.

17 Dead in Florida
Author: BobR    Date: 02/15/2018 14:03:29

It is sad, nauseating, disgusting, and depressing that I have to write this blog... again. Once again, a deadly school shooting dominates the news cycle. Seventeen kids died in Parkland Florida yesterday, in what might be the new Valentine's Day massacre. Once again, a person who showed the warning signs of being a threat was still allowed to have guns, especially the kind that have no place in our society.

Already this year, there have been 18 school shootings, and we are only 45 days into the year. That's one every 2.5 days. That is insanity. This is NOT what our founding fathers fought for.
