Must be spring someplace.
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/27/2017 12:28:42

Good Morning.

So, it's Memorial Day weekend, or the unofficial start of Summer. Too bad we never got a spring around these parts.

It was my feeling that since March 20, we've had no more than 5 days above fifty degrees around here, and certainly no more than 7, but checking the weather, it turns out my impressions are far off.

The Mask of the Red Death
Author: BobR    Date: 05/25/2017 13:33:06

THE "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal --the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.
- "The Mask of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe

We humans all share the same planet. From space, there are no boundaries, save for natural ones (the oceans, rivers, and high mountain ranges). There is a tribalism that we pass on from generation to generation, however, that seeks to divide us, to compartmentalize us, to instill an "us -vs- them" conflict that is unnecessary and harmful. Our xenophobic and racial and religious and cultural mistrust of "others" is like a scourge upon humanity. Even acknowledging its existence does not preclude us from engaging in wars both big and small. So much energy and time and money is employed in perpetuating it, that it prevents us (or perhaps at least retards us) from attaining those heights which would benefit us all.

To Bow or Not to Bow
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 05/21/2017 13:57:43

As we all know, President Obama bowed to the Saudi's when he visited, but Donald Trump refused to bow and reportedly told his staff that the first one that did would be sent home!

Less damage, or more?
Author: TriSec    Date: 05/20/2017 12:12:16

So, Mr. Trump is out of the country this morning.

Ordinarily, we should be cheering such a thing. He is thousands of miles away, and can probably do the least amount of damage outside Washington.

Or can he?

I'm no seer - so instead of trying to discover how far back we'll be setting our international relationships this trip, I'll just present a photo montage of how I foresee things might end up during the next 9 days or so.

But her Emails!
Author: BobR    Date: 05/18/2017 13:04:50

Irony is a cruel mistress. The most recent election is still very fresh (some might say "raw") in everyone's minds. We all still remember the chants of "lock her up!" from the tRump supporters. Republican politicians held numerous hearings with testimony from recently fired FBI director James Comey and Clinton herself. The upshot of all of it was that some emails weren't correctly marked as "classified" and made their way to her private server (which - btw - was never hacked).

Nonetheless, it was a source of controversy for her campaign, and she was painted as "crooked", untrustworthy, and cavalier with state secrets. These myths were picked up, amplified, and promulgated by American and Russian media, and tRump made hay with them at his rallies. It likely wasn't the only reason she lost the election, but it played a big part in the narrative - again, primarily from the tRump campaign.
