Prayers
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 2017-08-27 10:59:15

Velveeta had a splendid blog planned for today, but then Harvey had to come and ruin everything. Sending prayers out to all those in Texas. I'm heartbroken that many undocumented persons probably did not heed the warnings to evacuate and may lose their life. A reminder that most charities that provide humanitarian relief, DO NOT ask you to prove that you are "legal" only that you live in the affected area.

This Too Shall Pass
Author: BobR    Date: 2017-08-30 12:00:00

The reaction to the current trend toward removing statues honoring confederate generals and other soldiers is not unexpected. There's a certain mindset that gets passed down from generation to generation, and - to some extent - taught in classrooms. Some southerners refer to the Civil War as The War of Northern Aggression. They look to the past with wistful eyes of times gone by when plantation owners and their "workers" did what was common at the time.

But of course - the truth is harsher and shines a light on the reality of the times. "Heritage" and "States' Rights" boil down to white people owning black people. There's just no denying it. The southern slave states didn't want to give up the free labor - their economy depended on it. And so - they took up arms against the U.S. government and the U.S. military.

Accepting Ignoring Erasing
Author: Raine    Date: 08/24/2017 13:35:56

I hope we can learn from history. While many of the more conservative things people say that tearing down Confederate statues erases our history, they seem to forget another part of our history, right here in this nation.

Skimming the Scum
Author: BobR    Date: 08/23/2017 14:25:53

I didn't watch it; I couldn't watch it. Tuesday night, pResident tRump held a rally in Arizona and delivered a speech that has been described by Republican strategist Rick Wilson as "a shitshow of the highest order". You can read the whole thing here if you want to see his words as spoken and make up your own mind.

Right of the start, though he commented on the number of people there, saying "What a crowd... A lot of people in here, a lot of people.." And then "You know I'd love it if the cameras could show this crowd, because it is rather incredible. It is incredible." Despite tRump supporter claims to the contrary, his "crowd" was decidedly underwhelming:

Not so much.
Author: TriSec    Date: 08/22/2017 16:16:52

Hi all.

I've been rather tight-lipped about Papa TriSec of late. He is currently in Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital here in Boston. (Henceforth BIDMC). He had surgery on Friday, and is now improving somewhat.

As you are aware, your loyal TriSec is always quick to point out how much better Boston is than any other city. (meaning yours). Today, not so much.

Ask a Vet
Author: TriSec    Date: 08/22/2017 10:12:23

Good Morning.

I was fully prepared to write an old-school blog today, specifically to remind us about the cost in blood and treasure we've spent in Afghanistan.

I'll still note that today is our 5,798th day in Afghanistan.

We're reaching the point where it's about to become a generational war. Somebody born in 2001 (like Javi) will be graduating high school in 2019...and there's every indication that we'll still be there at that time.
