The motto of Atlanta, GA is "the city too busy to hate". While that may not always play out in practice, at least they are making an effort to identify a problem and work towards changing it. America has never been a country too busy to hate, although we've made steps over the decades in the right general direction. Certain types of institutional bigotry have been tamped down (made illegal in some cases), although never eliminated.
One of the horrifying aspects of the T-Rump candidacy is how his blatant pandering to the xenophobes, homophobes, and assorted bigots has riled up and - in their minds - legitimized their poisoned point of view. We've seen it bubbling up at T-Rump rallies, with minorities being assaulted by rally attendees. It seems that in general life, the haters are feeling emboldened to let their freak flag fly.
