Pope and Circumstance
Author: BobR    Date: 09/23/2015 13:18:39

America is all abuzz about the Pope visiting our country. He will be here in DC the next two days, then off to NYC and other destinations. Throughout history, the various leaders of the Catholic church have hewn to somewhat differing doctrines. Some were more Old Testament with strict punishments, and others were more New Testament pushing for forgiveness and Good Works. Regardless of their preferred philosophy, their word has always been considered directly from God Himself.

In recent years, more enlightened Catholics have decided that some of the church's tenets (particularly regarding birth control) are stuck in a past that ignores the realities of our modern world. The infallibility of the papacy is no longer sacrosanct. Nonetheless, the pope is still revered by millions, and generally given a modicum of respect by even non-Catholics. The latest pope, however, seems to have pushed some buttons that have unleashed a level of hostility rarely seen.

Being it's Monday morning, I am overwhelmed by too much news and information.

Still, here in the DC area, the news is all about the Pope coming to visit. Well, that and the looming Government shutdown.

Make 'Merica Great
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 09/20/2015 15:10:10

Yes, America has endured so much suffering these last 7 1/2 years. Don't we all want to go back to a time when bodies were shipped back from an illegal war daily? Back when good jobs were rare and health insurance was a luxury item? Remember the good ol' days when America was great and you could escape to a Super Dome with no running water or electricity after flood waters from a devastating hurricane invaded your neighborhood and killed your family, friends and pets? Back to a time when buildings stood tall and proud until knocked over by planes and flames - despite being warned about that being a possibility. Let's go back!

Yes, we watched the 'debate' last night. I made an early prediction stating that the most substantial portion of the evening would be the Junior Varsity team that consisted of Governor Bobby Jindal, Senator Lyndsey Graham, Former Governor George Pataki and former Senator Rick Santorum.

The Inevitable Iran Deal
Author: BobR    Date: 09/16/2015 13:13:37

Over the years, the Republicans have likened President Obama to a "dictator" or "tyrant". Why? Because despite all their protestations and machinations to prevent him from accomplishing his goals, he has managed to use the laws currently in place to find an avenue for progress. The anguish of impotence within the Republican-led Congress is palpable. They can't seem to understand why their pernicious tactics never seem to work.

Such is the case with the nuclear deal that we negotiated with Iran and several other countries. Because it didn't involve forcing Iran to cry "Uncle!", they consider it a bad deal. They've preached dire warnings, and demanded a "better" deal, with nary a clue as to what that means nor how to accomplish it. It's political theater at its worst.

The House has already had a non-binding (ie: toothless, ineffectual, worthless) vote on a resolution condemning the deal. It's all preemptive fodder for upcoming re-election campaigns, and - like the votes to repeal the ACA - a waste of time and taxpayer dollars, when there's a budget funding bill that requires their attention.
