The Belittling of Democracy
Author: Will in Chicago    Date: 2014-09-27 10:45:30

Ever since I could vote, I took my responsibility to do so very seriously. I grew up in a neighborhood with many veterans. The local polling place was my Chicago elementary school. My classes in grade school included learning about the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions. We even took a trip to Springfield to see the state legislature.

With that background, perhaps it is understandable that I get upset at efforts to strip people of their democratic rights or belittle democracy

'we welcome the scrutiny of the world'
Author: Raine    Date: 09/25/2014 13:11:13

You have seen the headlines, He talked about Syria, about Russia and about how this is not a war against Islam, but rather a fight against extremists around the world. It was the last few moments of his speech that gave me pause.

Nine Years
Author: BobR    Date: 09/24/2014 11:21:21

It was 9 years ago today that many of the members of this blog met in person for the first time. Back then, this blog did not yet exist - we were members of another blog and message forum and had been conversing online for a while. We met up in DC with about 250,000 other people to protest the wars in the Middle East (in particular - the undeclared war of choice in Iraq).

At that point, we were nearly 4 years in Afghanistan, and 2 years in Iraq. We were protesting the destruction of another sovereign nation, the reports of torture, the notion that every citizen in Iraq was suspect, the money wasted, the American lives wasted and used. We marched, we chanted, we flipped off the White House. There were no riots or tear gas or burned flags. The numbers of attendees were under-reported, and the ultimate result was probably nothing.

That was 9 years ago.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,734th day in Afghanistan, and our 96th day back in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,346
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,127

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through:

$ 1, 567, 198, 650, 000. 00

So we've been bombing Iraq for a few weeks now, and news is just breaking that we've started dropping bombs on Syria this morning. The question remains, is it doing any good? The answer seems to be "NO".

Good Morning.

I've got a few ideas swirling about today, so I think we'll be a little on the random side today.

We'll start in Washington. Dr. Maddow reported on this Thursday evening, and I'm a little surprised that it hasn't gotten more traction. Kongruss has essentially walked off the job.
