Joe, You Are My Brother
Author: Raine    Date: 06/08/2015 13:19:41

To Joe and Jill –- just like everybody else here, Michelle and I thank God you are in our lives. Taking this ride with you is one of the great pleasures of our lives. Joe, you are my brother. And I’m grateful every day that you’ve got such a big heart, and a big soul, and those broad shoulders. I couldn’t admire you more.
From of the President's eulogy to Beau Biden.

From Bruce to Caitlyn
Author: TriSec    Date: 06/06/2015 13:06:45

Good Morning.

Let's start a few hundred miles north of here today, circa 1976. As a ten-year-old boy, I had the tremendous privilege to travel to the city of Montreal to see the Olympic Games. We missed the ceremonies, but I can still remember seeing some gymnastics, and spending a lot of time sitting in the Olympic stadium watching track and field events.

We were in the stadium over several days of the decathalon, and watched Bruce Jenner take home the gold for the United States.

Ink by the Barrel, Paper by the Ton
Author: Raine    Date: 06/04/2015 13:59:11

“Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel and paper by the ton.”
Attributed as Greener's Law

As someone who has said I will vote for whomever the Democratic Party nominates, I want to say something. I know what I am going to say may piss off a lot of Clinton supporters.

Isn't it Ironic?
Author: BobR    Date: 2015-06-03 10:38:23

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...
- "Isn't it Ironic?" by Alanis Morissette

Well... no. None of those things are ironic. This mediocre song has gotten plenty of literalists irritated with the lyrics because most of the things mentioned don't fit the definition of ironic:

using words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning

There are things that are considered ironic beyond simple phrases. Here are some news stories that deliver what I would call "situational irony"...

Time Lapse
Author: Raine    Date: 06/01/2015 13:25:01

What all of us are hearing this morning is that parts of the Patriot Act have lapsed. Senator Rand Paul used Senate rules to limit debate on extending the existing Patriot Act. This was why the Senate was brought back on a rare weekend session. As of this morning everyone is talking about how we are either in hair-on-fire danger, or we have regained our privacy. The devil, as always, is in the details as to who is correct and who isn't.

Family Hour!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 05/31/2015 13:48:03

I once mentioned a family called the Duggars in a blog post back in 2aught8 or so. Back then, they were "stars" of a TV show called 17 Kids and Counting; now they have 37 kids thereabouts. All with names that start with the letter 'J'.
