Of all the ruins left by the exodus of American manufacturing and the 2008 economic crash, perhaps no place embodies it so vividly as Detroit. Most Americans see Detroit teetering on the edge. Most in Detroit know that they've already gone over. The reality is bleak.

We watched Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown" a few nights ago in which he visited Detroit and documented his visit. He described his actions with mixed emotions as he said he didn't want to participate in the "ruin porn":

I didn't realize how attached I was to little bits of rare metals and micro chip technology until my cell phone crashed. It happened on morning as I was about to embark on a lovely day filled with activities with family and friends. My cell phone quietly notified me that it needed an "update" according to the phones manufacturer.

So, while getting ready for my lovely day, I hit, "update".

DEBUNK Debunk debunk

I'm still constructing a blog for this morning -- in the mean time, I've been debunking.

I should get paid for this. That said -- I'd just be a paid shill for for the lefties, huh?

Republican Strategery
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-11-14 12:02:03

It's hard to tell what the Republicans are trying to accomplish. After losing ground in the 2012 elections, they talked a good game about being more inclusive, reaching beyond their largely white male demographic to pull in more voters.

Then they shut down the government.

Then they complained loudly that people couldn't get access to the healthcare insurance exchanges that they've been trying to kill for years.

And now they're punting on immigration reform... again.

Brrrs-day

Computer issues this morning -- let's just get this sucker rolling.

Have you heard the good news?
The additional 57-vote margin from Fairfax was expected to give Herring a statewide lead of 163 votes out of more than 2.2 million cast – barring any last-minute changes from other localities, which had until 11:59 pm Tuesday to submit their numbers to the state election board.

A recount appears all but certain after the statewide results are certified Nov. 25, and the Obenshain campaign made clear that it considers the race far from over. “We owe it to the people of Virginia to make sure we get it right, and that every legitimate vote is counted and subject to uniform rules,” Obenshain (Harrisonburg) said in a statement.

Herring, by contrast, treated his victory as assured in a campaign statement.
Good good news, indeed.

Also Richard Cohen doesn't understand why everyone is all upset.
Richard Cohen has the Richard Cohen–iest non-apology ever in response to his grotesque piece yesterday about “conventional” Americans “gagging” at interracial marriage. “I don’t understand it,” the Washington Post columnist told The Washington Post in what has to be the interview coup on the year. “What I was doing was expressing not my own views but those of extreme right-wing Republican tea party people. I don’t have a problem with interracial marriage or same-sex marriage. In fact, I exult in them . . . This is just below the belt. It’s a purposeful misreading of what I wrote.” Ew! Richard Cohen “exults” in your marriages, interracial couples and gay couples. Note that Richard Cohen has a history of “exulting” where he shouldn’t.

We've not visited with our friends at IAVA in quite some time. After all, it was Paul Rieckhoff's weekly visit with the good Dr. Maddow long ago now that was the genesis for this wee little column. With yesterday being Veteran's day, there are a few stories worth checking out.

It's Veteran's Day and I've had one helluva weekend. Not as bad as these guys did, but I am in no mental condition to write a blog today. So please - thank a veteran for doing the heavy lifting for the rest of us.

No Special Rights?
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 11/10/2013 15:23:04

Good morning dear readers. Can we all please take a moment to say prayers for the people effected by the Typhoon Haiyan? I fear the death toll will increase as the day goes on. The loss of life plus the continued devastation to our environment is just heart-breaking. It kept me awake most of the night.
