Back to Work - for now

It's finally over. This national embarrasment and manufactured crisis was totally avoidable, yet avoiding it wasn't really in their plans. After all the failed bills, after all the posturing, after all the billions lost, we are right where we would have been had Speaker Boehner let a "clean" bill come to the floor back when he first had the opportunity.

The Senate passed the bi-partisan bill yesterday afternoon with a strong margin. It was truly bipartisan, thanks to several smart and level-headed women. Boehner knew his bluff had been called, so he laid down his cards and backed away from the table. The bill passed the House last night by a healthy margin.

Now we wait.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/16/2013 13:14:34

There really isn't much to say about any of this. It comes down to a very basic point. The GOP-led House of Republicans created this mess and are now relying on Senate Republicans, who are the minority party, to get them out of this mess.

It's difficult to write about any issues of the day when there is such a large cloud hanging over the Nation. It's almost inconceivable that we are on the verge of defaulting on our debt. Yet, here we are. Less than a day away from doing just that.

Good Morning.

Today is our 4,391st day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,276
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,103

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 480, 724, 775, 000 .00

Let's take a look at the "slimdown" as our friends would call it, since we all know that no real Americans were harmed during the government shutdown.

Protesting 101
Author: BobR    Date: 2013-10-14 10:50:58

Protesting one's own government has a long and noble history, especially in this country, leading back to our very inception. It isn't that hard to do. You just need some posterboard, a magic marker, and enough gumption to stand on a street corner. Protesting effectively, however, takes a little thought and creativity. You have to decide what is the end goal of your protest and how to achieve that via your actions. Some basic points:

  1. Be clear about what is wrong and how to make it right
  2. Direct your protest so that those who need to see it do
  3. Don't piss off potential allies

This past weekend we had a couple clear examples from the right-wing about how NOT to protest. The first one started on Friday, and continued through on Saturday. I am of course talking about the DC Beltway Trucker Protest:

After a hectic weekend, yours truly is staying in bed for the day. I may even watch football.

What's there to discuss anyway? Our republican friends are intent on bringing down the ACA one way or another; even if it means hurting their friends on wall street. Sucks to be them right now.

Shutting it down
Author: TriSec    Date: 10/12/2013 11:32:42

Hi everyone. I know Columbus Day is increasingly divisive these days, but I'm still partially Italian...so we've still got some stuff going on. It's also closing weekend on the pond for our kayak season, so I'm off to the water in a bit. At least the weather will be good!

Late start today.

ICYMI: The government is still shut down. Boner still Orange, and truckers have been sighted on the beltway. And it's still raining.

Oh, The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons won the Nobel peace prize.

The Heat is On

I didn't want to write about the government shutdown again. Not only is it getting repetitive, but if I'm still writing about it, that means it's still shut down, and that's bad for everyone. I certainly hope that by the time I cycle around to my next blog post, my friends and countrymen who are employed by the government are back at work, where they all want to be.

Political Shivers
Author: Raine    Date: 10/09/2013 13:09:14

This a portion of the statement the President gave yesterday afternoon. Right off the bat, he used very strong and curious words.
Think about it this way, the American people do not get to demand a ransom for doing their jobs. You don't get a chance to call your bank and say I'm not going to pay my mortgage this month unless you throw in a new car and an Xbox. If you're in negotiations around buying somebody's house, you don't get to say, well, let's talk about the price I'm going to pay, and if you don't give the price then I'm going to burn down your house. That's not how negotiations work. That's not how it happens in business. That's not how it happens in private life.

In the same way, members of Congress, and the House Republicans in particular, don't get to demand ransom in exchange for doing their jobs. And two of their very basic jobs are passing a budget and making sure that America's paying its bills. They don't also get to say, you know, unless you give me what the voters rejected in the last election, I'm going to cause a recession.

That's not how it works. No American president would deal with a foreign leader like this. Most of you would not deal with either co- workers or business associates in this fashion. And we shouldn't be dealing this way here in Washington.
