Newer Traditions

For as long as I can remember the Christmas season didn’t start until Santa Claus arrived in front of Macy’s at the end to of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I never realized the holiday tradition was started in 1924 by Macy’s employees most of whom were first generation immigrants and where so proud of their country they wanted to celebrate it in with a type of festival their parents loved in Europe . It used to be the Macy’s Christmas Day Parade and featured animals from the Central Park Zoo.

Several computer crashes today. I'll be back next week.

Please enjoy some of Sarah's book excerpts:

"I had followed the Iran hostage crisis and remember wondering why President Jimmy Carter didn't act more decisively. From my high schooler's perspective, I thought the question was, Why did he allow America to be humiliated and pushed around? The new president being sworn in radiated confidence and optimism. The enemies of freedom took notice. In years to come people would ask, What did he have that Carter didn't? To me the answer was obvious. He had a steel spine.

Saturday Open Thread
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/21/2009 11:10:27

Good Morning!

Got a cop-out for ya today. I haven't had to do this in a while.

Used to be an early Saturday am blog meant a platelet donation, but I haven't been to the Red Cross in months now. Being in and out of work and having a crazy schedule will do that to you, I guess.

Speaking of crazy schedules, I'm out of the house in half an hour and heading for the store. It's our "holiday kickoff" meeting this morning before the store opens.

I should be back home by 10 am (and back to the store for my shift at 1:30) so perhaps I'll come back and try to write something real.

TTFN!

A Tale of Two Biddies
Author: clintster    Date: 11/20/2009 13:15:04

This week, America was treated to two prime examples of the modern state of conservatism. Curiously enough, they were both brought about by women, and they were both in the process of selling books.

First there was attempted temper tantrum committed by Carrie Prejean on "Larry King Live". She was on there ostensibly to promote her first book "Still Standing", the courageous story of a young woman who overcomes the odds to become a beauty queen and come in second in the Miss USA pageant, despite the machinations of the media, liberals, gay people, and smarty-pants people on the Internets who put her innocent answer to a hateful, loaded question together with that dumb, stupid jerk-face Keyboard Cat.

Dear Georgia,
Author: Raine    Date: 11/19/2009 13:16:20

Today is my last blog from the state of Georgia. By Saturday evening, I will be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia- I believe the more common term, according to Sarah Palin during the election last year, is the state of NoVa, or Northern Virginia.

It has been an exciting latter half of the decade for me. As many of you know, I moved from my home state of New York in 2006, and settled in Atlanta. Being the political junkie that I am, I quickly studied up on the workings of the city as well as the state. By 2008, I knew something. We were were like vinegar and water. Not Atlanta mind you, the state in general. It is true, this city is indeed a blue oasis in a red sea. It's a beautiful here, but I suspect it won't be sorry to see this yankee leave. As fate - and diligence -- would have it, my partner was offered a job in the DC Metro area. He took it and the decision was made for us to relocate. I have made friends here and leaving makes me sad, but we will be back to visit. We will see each other again.

Who's Dithering?
Author: BobR    Date: 11/18/2009 12:15:29

Former vice-president Dick Cheney recently criticized President Obama for "dithering" in the Middle East, instead of being decisive and bold. Obama's critics think he shouldn't waste any more time weighing the evidence, and should just make a decision and go for it. People's lives are hanging in the balance, and all this "dithering" is just going to cause more people to die.

Yet - when he brings that "decisive and bold" leadership which they claim to be clamoring for to the health care debate, suddenly they accuse him of moving too fast, of trying to rush things through. Why the hurry? It's not like people's lives are in danger, right?

NYC can handle this.
Author: Raine    Date: 11/16/2009 13:33:56

For nearly 10 months, we have been waiting for something to happen regarding Gitmo detainees. On Friday, Attorney General Eric Holder finally announced that he was bringing among others, Kaleid Sheikh Mohammed to NYC federal Court for trial. According to reports, no evidence garnered via torture will be used. The right wing is going insane about this. Personally I think this is the right thing to do, considering Amendment VI of the US Constitution:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.

Tea Party!
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 11/15/2009 15:43:13

Recently Velveeta has been hearing a lot about one of her favorite subjects other than planting roses: tea parties! Oh the finger cakes and sandwiches, the antique cups and saucers, the pots brimming over with Jasmine tea, the hats and gloves and lest we forget... the juicy gossip! What a day!

So, when I heard that there was going to be a tea party in my area I was overjoyed. First, to prepare for the party, I splurged on a new crinoline vintage skirt, satin-rimmed Adele hat with large ribbon (pink) and of course a pair of fitted white gloves. I prepared my Herbed Cheese Scones using a recipe handed down from my Great Grandmother served on an antique St. Andrews rose pattern dish and then I was ready. And what a glorious day for a tea party!

Mony, mony
Author: TriSec    Date: 11/14/2009 13:20:57

A while back now, in the early days of us listening to Ms. Miller, I remember a commercial from some snake-oil salesman peddling her "powerful, free tapes".

These alleged self-help things would make you healthy, wealthy, wise, and highly desireable among the opposite sex.

Something she said in the commercial has stuck with me ever since. "There is no problem on this earth that cannot be solved by the application of money."
