Today I would like to take a look at this Perry/Bachmann HPV vaccination issue.

I don't have a problem with the vaccinations, to be honest... Rick Perry, however, only required it for females in his state. What is not reported is that it was overturned by the Texas legislature, AFTER he recieved a lot of money. But let's get back to that female thing... The CDC has stated it recommends it for males as well:
HPV vaccines prevent serious health problems, such as cervical cancer and other, less common cancers, which are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus). In addition to cancer, HPV can also cause other health problems, such as genital warts. HPV is a common virus that is easily spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with another person. It is possible to have HPV without knowing it, so it is possible to unknowingly spread HPV to another person. Safe, effective vaccines are available to protect females and males against some of the most common types of HPV and the health problems that the virus can cause.
So why not males? Are only girls sexually active? Are they the only ones responsible for sexual activity?

My biggest issue with what Rick Perry did is that he usurped the legislative channels in his state and signed an executive order requiring girls to get vaccinated. It was WHY he did it. Craig Crawford makes the point very well:
Merck & Co gave Perry $23,500 in direct contributions and much more laundered to his campaign coffers through its $500,000 donated to the Republican Governor's Association that he chaired, Bloomberg reports. (Ponzi scheme?)

While the Perry camp tries to change the subject by taking advantage of Michelle Bachmann's idiotic and unproven claim that the vaccine to prevent cervical cancer causes mental retardation, the real issue remains: Did he circumvent his state legislature and mandate a vaccine because its maker politically supports him and hired his former chief of staff as a lobbyist?
This is the real story here. It's one that Michelle Bachmann failed to highlight the other night. Instead, Bachmann worried about 'choice'. She wants choice when it comes to the vaccinations -- but for nothing else when it comes to a woman's reproductive health. Ironic. Instead she takes the word of some unknown supporter and repeats as truth: It causes mental retardation. When asked about it, she claimed she was just reporting what she was told.

All of this just shows to me how badly these people claim to represent themselves and others. The nuance and the understanding of what the real political implications are just not there. This is indeed a story of money and choice -- and how corrupted they are. If Michelle Bachmann can't make a case and carry through to it completion, how can anyone expect her to be President? She can't-- you can not be for choice and anti-choice at the same time. One needs to make a stand, and she did not. Instead she muddied her case up and further de-legitimized herself.

If Rick Perry is offended that he was accused of only taking $5,000 dollars (it was a far higher number, as explained above) from a drug manufacturer and then forcing vaccinations on young women -- and is still considered presidential material -- what do you think he will do as President? Rick Perry took a stand -- and is proud of his decision. He can be bought and sold, to hell with governance and the rule of law-- even if it is Texas. It's not what he did, it was HOW he went about doing it.

They all have talked with so much vitriol and hyperbole that they really can't talk themselves out of what they stand for -- if they stand for anything at all. They are avoiding the biggest issue here -- money and choice in politics. It only matters when it benefits their desire to win. That isn't standing for anything at all. that is pure pandering for power. Maybe we need a vaccination for truth.
