The New American History
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 03/14/2010 14:24:05

Oh those big-haired, big church, big bugs, football-lovin', boisterous Texans are at it again. Now they want to make a few changes to our American history. Lets take a look at some of the tweeks:

On Slavery:

".... Africans were brought over for a short period of America's early history in order to help us become the great nation that we are. African men, women and children joyfully toiled in the fields picking cotton, tobacco and other crops; helped in the homes with cleaning, cooking and other daily chores and Americans graced them with the knowledge to know the Gospels and Jesus to relieve them of the sin of the devil which they seemed to have in them. In return, the blacks taught us a few songs which they would sing while they tirelessly worked long hard days with a bouncy joy in their steps and a politeness with which we, sadly, no longer see. The songs they sang later became "Jazz" music".

On the founding fathers:

..."and they were, of course, Christian men who loved Jesus but felt sorry for some of those who practiced other religions and so, to appease them made it seem as if they wanted a line between Government and religion. But scholars later confirmed that was not the case. Religion is only mentioned in the Constitution that seems to point to a desire for some degree of religious freedom. That appearance is in Article 6, at the end of the third clause:

No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

In this way, even Catholics can run for public office. "

Suffrage:

"Around the mid 1920's women started complaining and whining a lot. So, eventually they were given the right to vote in 1929".

The Civil Rights Act

"Around the early 1960's the blacks, whom this country had cared for so well, turned against whites in the streets and began marching and singing and boycotting. To appease them Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968."

Martin Luther King:

"..was a man who had a dream that one day his kids could go to college and hold hands with white girls."

Cesar Chavez:

"... was a man who revolted against the status quo and led a violent revolution against his country. He started a union, which is a place for communists to gather and plot to revolt even more."

There's a lot more to the new texts. Stuff about Viet Nam, the World Wars, the industrial revolution, the Gold Rush and the taming of the Indians and later the Mexicans.

Next up, the school board is going to take on the challenge of restoring school prayer and prayer at the biggest social event that Texans have: football.

Good morning, bloggers!!

Excellent post, VJ! I presume that the text quotes are satire and not what will actually appear in text books in Texas.

I posted about this at a few places, including the boards here. As the blog is more active than the boards, let me quote myself from the thread: Texas Textbook Massacre:

I know several good people who live in Texas or once lived in Texas. There are Texans who proudly serve in our nation's military or contribute to our nation and world in many ways.

However, there are times when I think Texas has some of the most highly politicized public bodies in the nation. I would say that this is the case with the Texas Board of Education.

Thomas Jefferson is gone from the textbooks. Instead, conservative religious icon John Calvin has been elevated in his place. There is no coverage of the separation of church and state, but coverage of Judeo-Christian influences on the Founding Fathers. The Texas Board of Education, in my humble opinion, has decided that it will have political indoctrination in the schools.

There is a great story at the Huffington Post that includes a slide show of the most radical changes. Honestly, if this becomes the national standard for education, I would be tempted to learn Hebrew, move to Tel Aviv and register with the Labor or Meretz parties. After all, the school board does not want students to know that the U.S. Constitution prevents the elevation of one religion above another. Sorry, but I have to conclude that there are some Americans who do not believe in democracy or equality -- indeed, some of the board members are contemptuous of the word democracy. (I suggest that they read the Federalist Papers, the writings of Locke and other Enlightenment thinkers.) If the forces represented by this school board ever came to full power in this country, I am not sure that my rights or the rights of those I respect would be protected or truly valued.

Here is a link to the story and an excerpt:

Texas Textbook MASSACRE: 'Ultraconservatives' Approve Radical Changes To State Education Curriculum

AUSTIN, Texas - A far-right faction of the Texas State Board of Education succeeded Friday in injecting conservative ideals into social studies, history and economics lessons that will be taught to millions of students for the next decade.

Teachers in Texas will be required to cover the Judeo-Christian influences of the nation's Founding Fathers, but not highlight the philosophical rationale for the separation of church and state. Curriculum standards also will describe the U.S. government as a "constitutional republic," rather than "democratic," and students will be required to study the decline in value of the U.S. dollar, including the abandonment of the gold standard.

"We have been about conservatism versus liberalism," said Democrat Mavis Knight of Dallas, explaining her vote against the standards. "We have manipulated strands to insert what we want it to be in the document, regardless as to whether or not it's appropriate."

Following three days of impassioned and acrimonious debate, the board gave preliminary approval to the new standards with a 10-5 party line vote. A final vote is expected in May, after a public comment period that could produce additional amendments and arguments.

Decisions by the board -- made up of lawyers, a dentist and a weekly newspaper publisher among others -- can affect textbook content nationwide because Texas is one of publishers' biggest clients.

I do not see Dwight Eisenhower or Barry Goldwater as men who would have supported such a radical agenda. It seems that their would-be heirs have little in common with these conservative icons.

Hi Folks....happy pie day!

It's early yet, but make mine strawberry...the famed Testa's recipe if you don't mind.

And I'm gonna need a wee bit of espresso and Sambucca on the side....

What? That's not what today is?

Oh, Poop.

The more crap I hear from Texas maybe we should let the idiots secede and then they can absorb all the low end of the IQ pool in their state. Hey, they already have Bush so there not far off.

Long ago, the "Boston-Austin" connection gave us the JFK-LBJ administration. I think Texas has sucked pretty much ever since then.

I don't know what it is about them; maybe it's the arrogance or maybe that "Texas mystique" that just rubs me the wrong way.

I really and truly can't stand Texas or anyone from there. And that does not include the Bushes; they're posers from New England.

(Then again, I think much of the rest of the country has the same feelings about New England. Ah, screw 'em. You folks owe us. Ya know, independence, Lexington & Concord, and that whole Thanksgiving thing? What's Texas ever done for the rest of the USA?)

I wish New England and the Maritimes would get their act together and secede from their respective mother countries and form "Amerada".

But, I digress.

Still raining.

Large areas of the city are flooded...many streets impassable. Four apartment buildings on the next street over had to be evacuated by front-end loader this afternoon.

Yeesh.

(We're on the high ground between the Charles River and Lyman Brook...water is 3/10 of a mile away right now.)
