Gunning for Perspective

During last night's Sunday Night Football Halftime show, Bob Costas spoke of the horrific events that happened in Kansas city. This is the article Costa referenced, written by Jason Whitlock.
Nobody knows if Jovan Belcher would still be alive had he not had possession of a firearm. At the very least -- I wish we could talk about the gun culture in this country. I'm fairly sure I am not alone is this desire. Ask the victims of Jared Loughner. Ask the victims of the Aurora shooting. Ask the victims of the Virginia Tech Massacre. Ask Trayvon Martin's family. Ask Jordon Davis' family. Ask the many families who have been witness to PTSD related suicides. Ask the mother of Jovan Belcher and then ask her to speak on behalf of her orphaned granddaughter.
Not all handguns owners kill. Most do not. Not all are psychologically impaired. Not all are vigilantes. Some are liberal; some are conservative. they are black & white; male and female. I believe that is of little comfort to victims of gun murders.
"We’ve come to accept our insanity." Indeed we have.
We shouldn't have to. It is time for responsible gun owners in this nation to allow for this discussion. This isn't about self-defense - it is about responsibility. Such responsibility isn't solely personal: it's also communal. It is about being rational enough to say that, perhaps, some people should not have guns. The Second Amendments fails when innocent people die. It fails when people take the law into their own hands. It fails when people who are clearly sick find themselves in the company of a gun. It fails when people purchase a gun illegally. It fails when owning an object is more important than the lives it takes. The second amendment is the only amendment that talks about an object as right -- and that object has become fetishized in our nation. To reasonable gun owners I say: No one wants to take away YOUR gun. Gun owners need to figure out how ensure those among them that should not have a firearm do not get access to one.
The right to own a gun fails when people who don't know how to respect a gun kill innocents. Until every responsible gun owner in America is willing to accept this and discuss our violent gun culture -- more innocent people will die.
Gun deaths are 100% preventable. They may not be 100% avoidable. That should, In my opinion, be the discussion. Until we can discuss how to avoid gun deaths we will have -- once again -- learned nothing.

Well, you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports clichés was heard yet again: Something like this really puts it all in perspective. Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf-life since we will inevitably hear about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games. Please, those who need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportion about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective. You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City-based writer Jason Whitlock with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article.
"Our current gun culture,"Whitlock wrote, "ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead."
"Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it. In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions, and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows?"
"But here," wrote Jason Whitlock," is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."
I would argue that your rationalizations speak to how numb we are in this society to gun violence and murder. We’ve come to accept our insanity. We’d prefer to avoid seriously reflecting upon the absurdity of the prevailing notion that the second amendment somehow enhances our liberty rather than threatens it.
How many young people have to die senselessly? How many lives have to be ruined before we realize the right to bear arms doesn’t protect us from a government equipped with stealth bombers, predator drones, tanks and nuclear weapons?
Our current gun culture simply ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.

Still aglow from yesterday (Yes, a retail workday!) I was totally on my "A"-game yesterday. Sold a ton of high-end stuff.
And Saturday, I saw my old Scoutmaster at the store....he's 72 and still looking good!

So, it's been 15 days since my last treatment. (Alas, back again Wednesday.)
I did a bad thing last night (which I won't divulge), but I was standing outside for a while.
It was 45 degrees here last night, I was out with only my mocassins for footwear and a lightweightt wool layering piece.
I felt like me again - I wasn't cold, my hands didn't trigger, and I just enjoyed watching the night for a few minutes.
There is hope that maybe I'll make a swift recovery once this freakin' thing is all over. (January 4!)

I rarely speak of him, but a friend of mine was murdered nearly 25 years ago now.
Curiously, I also knew the perpetrator....I'd agree with Mrs. Hotchkiss' statements about him on the website referenced.

I still think there needs to be some really strict laws on gun owner ship, fail safes if you would. Maybe it needs to start at state levels
The Second Amendment says you have a right to bear arms, however, you have to be a safe gun owner. After all this is a powerful weapon who's soul purpose is to take life from another living being.
1) you must register your gun
2) you must pass gun owner ship classes
3) you must yearly pass a safety test to renew your gun permit

As most of you know, I am in possession of my brother's guns. I am helping him liquidate the arsenal. Here in Florida, person to person gun sales are perfectly fine. The parties involved just agree on a price and I get paid. There no backround check needed, these sales aren't registered. I find this to be ridiculous.

I blame Wayne LaPierre at the NRA for the current climate on gun control. He is a 2nd Amendment fanatic. Anytime somebody somewhere makes the mildest comment on on gun control he sends out hysterical blast emails to every NRA member and they collectively freak out about how their gun rights are being damaged.

I've long held the opinion that the Founding Fathers weren't infallible....it is entirely possible that they got the Second Ammendment wrong.
NRA always recognizes the "Right to bear arms shall not be infringed" bit, but always overlooks the "part of a well-regulated militia" part.
My read is that private citizens shouldn't actually own guns unless they are part of a militia - it's the "Minuteman Model". Citizen-soldiers are in the community, ready to go for whatever need.
When we got away from that model sometime after the Civil War, the National Guard and the Regular Army sort of negated the militia requirement for the 2nd ammendment.
In short...you want to own a gun, at least join the National Guard and play by the rules.
NRA always recognizes the "Right to bear arms shall not be infringed" bit, but always overlooks the "part of a well-regulated militia" part.

Why I thought the company party was shit:
1. Crowded. Really, really crowded.
2. Stuffy, see number 1 as to why.
3. Soft drinks and bottled water were part of the cash bar. So if you chose to be responsible, you were still on the hook for $4 for each bottled water of softdrink.
4. No comprehensive seating plan. If you didn't get there at 7 on the dot you got a shitty table.
5. Bad food. Pork is not suppose to be grainy or gritty. The pork roularde entered my mouth and left it just as fast. Romaine lettuce drowning in salad dressing with a couple of croutons is not Caesar salad. I didn't even try to beef of fish. speaking of the three proteins, there was no viable vegetarian option.
I left after about 20 minutes.

Why I thought the company party was shit:
1. Crowded. Really, really crowded.
2. Stuffy, see number 1 as to why.
3. Soft drinks and bottled water were part of the cash bar. So if you chose to be responsible, you were still on the hook for $4 for each bottled water of softdrink.
4. No comprehensive seating plan. If you didn't get there at 7 on the dot you got a shitty table.
5. Bad food. Pork is not suppose to be grainy or gritty. The pork roularde entered my mouth and left it just as fast. Romaine lettuce drowning in salad dressing with a couple of croutons is not Caesar salad. I didn't even try to beef of fish. speaking of the three proteins, there was no viable vegetarian option.
I left after about 20 minutes.

This foul burg I dwell in has had many a feature for the teevee and cinema filmed here nothing of late though. Back before there was Hollywood, there was Jacksonville. Back in the day this town was major center for film production

This year the NFL instituted a no helmet hit policy. They are more likely to sit a player for a concussion(see Michael Vick and RGIII) -- they've taken seriously the use of steroids -- but this, this should have been a moment to teach.
It's a conundrum. I think this is a bigger problem than football. Bob Costas took a decent stance in highlighting it.

Here's the thing: not all NFL players shoot and kill themselves. Yes, head injuries are a very big issue. I'm not minimizing that.
We have a problem with mental issues in our nation. We have a problem with traumatic brain injury. We have a problem with PTSD.
Jovan Belcher may have had a serious brain injury -- but there is something to be said about him having that gun.

Testaverde and the Jets spoke out against playing on the weekend after 9/11, and the Jets were prepared to forfeit the game rather than fly.The NFL decided to move that week's games to the end of the regular season.
