The Cycle Repeats
Author: BobR    Date: 12/14/2012 14:06:05

Ever since Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced her intention to step down at the end of the president's first term, there has been a major bru-ha-hah over her potential replacement. UN Ambassador Susan Rice was the presumptive nominee. Senator John Kerry's (D-MA) name was also mentioned. As soon as Kerry's name was added to the list, it became pretty clear that HE was the one the Republicans wanted, so that they would have a shot at his senate seat. As such, Ms. Rice became a target of relentless nit-picking and fake outrage.

The badgering worked. Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration yesterday via a letter written to the White House. She wanted the job and President Obama wanted to give it to her, but she felt the negatives of the confirmation process from the Senate would be too disruptive to the president. He could ignore this and nominate her anyway, but it's unlikely he would do so.

Once again, the Republicans have taken a fairly non-political and routine process, and politicized it. Rice was criticized for passing along the information she was given by the CIA. The CIA was withholding info for security reasons. Somehow, then, it's her fault for "lying" to the American people. This is a prime example of how Republicans use fake outrage to get what they want.

It's sad that a supremely qualified candidate that wants the position has to pull herself out of the running. What's equally sad is that people on the left will blame President Obama for this. I heard Dan Rather do exactly that on the Rachel Maddow Show last night. That meme is starting to creep into the media already:
For all the high-minded niceties offered publicly, a genuine frustration could be felt below the surface. Not just from Rice's defenders, who had spent weeks yearning for the White House to push back more forcefully against her critics, or from Democrats, who wanted Obama to go forward with the nomination and make an example out of those pledging to block her appointment.

Others are being more direct:
Close watchers of Washington's national security politics waited to see what Obama would do. A relatively minor Capitol figure had taken a hard shot at the president: Would the White House come back at him, or would it accommodate and backpedal? Obama's silence was, in the longstanding view of some inside and outside the administration, the first in a series of retreats that would mark the first-term national security policy, which left Guantanamo Bay open and terror suspects outside the federal court system.

"Susan Rice is essentially a repeat of Gitmo in 2009," a former Obama administration official emailed moments after Susan Rice withdrew her name for secretary of state Thursday afternoon. "You have to give up on her because the politics are so bad that the White House thinks it can't win. But the politics are so bad because they spent too long not fighting for it and instead just watching things get worse. Self-fulfilling."

Once again, the blame for the actions of the Republicans is falling on President Obama's shoulders.

Watch for it.

Morning, comrades.

Kerry would be an awesome SecState, IMHO. I also think Mike Capuano would be running for the Senate Seat if it came to that. (Although Martha Coakley is on the short list again.) Bill Weld's name is also percolating up the GOP list for a try.

(disclaimer: "Big Red" is one of two Republicans in my life I have actually voted FOR, so I'd have to give him a hard lookover if he does it.)

I actually thought the President and Ms. Rice have taken the high road here - both of their statements contain a lot of thinly-veiled digs on the GOP, but the vast unwashed masses won't pick up on that nuance.

YOu know there's part of me that wonders if Randi's not correct and Kerry pulled a Kerrigan on Rice.

I think the way Susan Rice handled this situation is precisely why she would have made an excellent SoS.

That said, I heard Rather last night as well, and felt it really disrespectful of he and others to put this on the head of the President. Susan Rice is a woman smart enough to make her own decisions. Her decision to withdraw from contention was hers.

It bothers me, this meme that Obama didn't do enough.

And now, curiously I feel icky this morning. They took me off the harsh stuff, but maybe that was working with the 5FU somehow to mollify all the side effects.

I ate everything that wasn't tied down last night, but now have no appetite and even skipped breakfast this am. I have sipped at some tea laced with suger so I get a few calories.

Anyway....I ditch the freakin' pump this afternoon, then off to a Pack Meeting. I'm going to try to play some Xmas tunes tonight.

Mornin' all & Happy Fridee!

Those teabagger assholes in the Michigan state house are on a SERIOUS vendetta against the citizens who voted them out a month ago.. they've passed TWO right-to-mooch laws, re-passed the fascist emergency manager law that was REPEALED by referendum last month, passed hardcore anti-choice and anti-contraception measures, and now yesterday they passed possibly the most sadistic concealed carry bill in the country.

Can we just rename Michigan ALEC Headquarters?

Seriously, get this crap:

Analysis of Flawed Right to Work Legislation Shows Governor, Republican Legislators, Had Never Reviewed Language Prior to Signing it Into Law

“The public was not given an opportunity to read these bills, legislators were not given an opportunity to read these bills, and we now know that the Governor himself either didn't read or didn't understand these bills himself,” said Senator Bert Johnson (D – Detroit). “This process has been a complete affront to Democracy from the start and was nothing more than a political gift to the Koch Brothers and ALEC who bought and paid for this legislation.”

A series of questions have been raised in recent days over the legality of the “Right to Work” legislation as well as the process in which it passed. A lawsuit has already been filed against the Michigan House of Representatives for violating the Open Meetings Act as these bills were passed while the public was illegally locked out of the State Capitol and additional legal challenges are expected in the coming days.

Oh that's not all.. Apparently the Michigan constitution clearly defines the state's civil service commission as the only body with the power to regulate terms of employment or collective bargaining with public sector civil service employees. At the very least that part of one of the right-to-mooch laws is invalid.

In any case.. repealing all this shit by referendum only needs like 280k signatures to reach the ballot. You can be sure it's all going down, and then Snyder and the remaining ALEC cronies in the state assembly are going down.

I am sad that everything has to be politicized these days. I had my own concerns about rice, particularly her ties to the Keystone XL pipeline. However, I think that the GOP was very disrespectful.

If Kerry becomes Secretary of State, I think that the Democrats should get the strongest possible candidate to run for office.

As for Michigan, I think that a lot of the actions of the governor and the legislature should be examined for possible court action and ballot actions. Let's say that if the GOP has been playing a long game of poker, they are now showing their cards. The suit seems to spell out a return to America, circa 1898 -- a land where elite business owners had far more influence on government than the public, most of whom were poor and many who labored under unsafe conditions.

Well, I got an errand to run, I hope to be back soon.

I liked what David Bender just said-- Deval Patrick could interim appoint Barney frank as a placeholder, and then run for the senate seat himself (Bender said Patrick will be termed out by then, I wasn't aware of that)

I could livewiththat.

He also mentioned Tri's own Ed Marckey -- said he has plenty of money to run for Senate.

There is no term limit on the Governor's office in this Commonwealth.

However, Deval Patrick is on record as stating he only wanted two terms and will not run again, so take that FWIW.

I have not heard anything about Ed Markey running for the Senate. The only rumblings are around Brown trying again, Martha Coakley, and possibly Bill Weld.

Not even who we all thought should have run last time, Mike Capuano.

In any case...

Comment by TriSec on 12/14/2012 16:05:14
Oh, and the law in this Commonwealth was changed a while back. It used to be appointment by the governor to fill a term, but this was changed by the legislature during the Romney tenure so he couldn't appoint a republican, should the situation arise.

It has not been changed back; we'd still need a special election if Kerry goes up.

Gov. Patrick could do nothing in this situation with Barney Frank. (but wouldn't he be fun in the Senate?)
