In his State of the Union speech, one of President Obama's objectives for America was to provide access to education for as many people as possible. From Head Start to affordable college loans, making America smarter is worthy goal. It will be hard as long as we (as a nation) celebrate celebrity (and notoriety) and sport over intelligence. There's also that pesky Republican drive to make Americans suspicious of science.

We need to do something, because boy - are we stupid.

By now, you've likely heard the audio of the phone call from the woman who thinks that the deer crossing signs on a certain stretch of road should be moved, because it's dangerous for the deer to cross there. You see, people are hitting the deer with their cars, so the deer shouldn't be "encouraged" to cross there.

Another woman in Ohio thinks that's nuts. Deer can't read! So - she asks - why put up the signs at all? Since the deer can't read the signs, it's a waste of taxpayer money. And anyway, we eat deer, and this is a socialist plot like Obamacare to treat deer better than a fetus. (no - I am not kidding... read the link).

Well sure - you can find stupifying stupidity in the general population. After all, this isn't Lake Wogegon where everyone is above average. Someone needs to be in the D- category. Our elected officials, however, should be held to a higher standard.

At the state level, that doesn't always work out. People with money, who have friends with money, and are driven to seek the office will win out over the smart grad with more integrity than salesmanship. Enter Republican Alabama state rep Mary Sue McClurkin, who should know better says that a fetus is the largest organ in the body (female body, we presume).
In a recent interview, state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin explained why she was sponsoring House Bill 57 The Womens Health and Safety Act which would require clinics to follow ambulatory clinic building codes and make it a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison for a nurse, nurse practitioner or physicians assistant to dispense abortion-inducing medications, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.

When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body, the lawmaker declared. Thats a big thing. Thats a big surgery. You dont have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.

That resulted in a well-deserved snark response:
In fact, the largest internal organ in the body is the liver, weighing 3.5 pound on average. The bodys largest external organ is the skin. A fetus weighs about 0.6 pounds at 20 weeks.

My liver, heart, and skin are all very excited that we are now giving organs personhood rights, although the latter is slightly upset about losing out on its largest organ in the human body rep, Jezebels Katie J.M. Baker wrote on Monday.

Okay what about at the national level? We've heard plenty of lies and stupid comments from the House and the Senate, but sometimes the stupid shines a little brighter. Everyone is pretty familiar with The Onion. It is a parody newspaper that carries hilarious satire of real news. Most people read it online, but in DC you can get it in print. How it is that an elected House representative doesn't know this is beyond me. Apparently though, John Fleming (R-LA) believed a parody article on Planned Parenthood:
In a Facebook status on Friday, the Louisiana Republican alerted his followers to The Onions May 18, 2011 article, Planned Parenthood Opens $8 Billion Abortionplex and wrote More on Planned Parenthood, abortion by the wholesale. Flemings spokesman Doug Sachtleben confirmed to POLITICO the post has since been removed from the congressmans Facebook page and said the office had no further comment.
[..]
The May 2011 Onion article details the opening of a sprawling abortion facility that will allow the organization to terminate unborn lives with an efficiency never before thought possible. The fictional Abortionplex includes more than 2,000 rooms dedicated to the procedure, as well as coffee shops, bars, dozens of restaurants and retail outlets, a three-story nightclub, and a 10-screen multiplex theater features intended not only to help clients relax, but to foster a sense of community and make abortion more of a social event.

Why yes, that is TOTALLY believable...

If he was a newbie, you might cut him some slack. However, he is starting his 3rd term in House, so he should know better. He should also do what ANYONE should do on Facebook before giving anything like this credence - verify it.

The creme de la creme, however, is Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). A career politician for several decades, and one of the most powerful politicians in the country, he should have some of the best staff in DC. How is it, then, that he too (or someone in his staff, if you believe Lawrence O'Donnell) believed an absurd story posted on a military spoof site? He went so far as to send a letter about the story:
On November 14, 2012, Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) wrote to Elizabeth King, the Pentagons congressional liaison, with a an unusually credulous query. I am writing on behalf of a constituent who has contacted me regarding Guantanamo Bay prisoners receiving Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits, McConnell wrote in a letter acquired by Danger Room. I would appreciate your review and response to my constituents concerns.

Um, Guantanamo detainees getting GI Bill benefits? Yes, thats from the Duffel Blog, as McConnells constituent clearly states, complete with the reference URL. Said constituent even notes that he or she cant find any information about the alleged government payouts to suspected insurgents and terrorists.

Why would any high-ranking elected official take a letter written by a constituent referencing an absurd story as factual without even trying to do a little research first? What does it say about someone of his stature who would believe this, yet poo-poo overwhelming climate change research?

It says that it's time for America to stop reacting and start researching. Facts are our friends, and science makes us smarter. If we don't start embracing that, we'll become a nation of Forrest Gumps, living in a land of Idiocracy.

I'm glad when stupid people say stupid things - particularly our elected representatives and in this day and age. When someone says a fetus is an organ or that a woman who is raped can stop a pregnancy, these days it gets instantly called out, the comment lives forever, and it has quite the potential to doom someone politically. I do you see your point with the deer crossing though (I didn't know any of that!), we do seem to be becoming a Nation of almost aggressively stupid and proudly ignorant people. The whole anti-science thing terrifies me. Are we going to start using Gatorade on our crops next?

If fits neatly into today's theme of stupid. Not the memo, using that FBI issued Blackberry to sext.

Nothing at all! I think we have a case of a rollinig video player. That was supposed to be an interview Greta Van Sustern did with Lindsey.
He said the same thing to Chris Wallace:
SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM, R-S.C.: Well, on the day of the vote, there was a blog posting about a speech I think in 2007 or 2008 that Chuck Hagel made at Rutgers University, and the blogger was a supporter of Senator Hagel. He was thinking about running for president and he put on his blog the next day six points of the speech, question-and-answer session. And point six was allegedly Senator Hagel said that the U.S. State Department was an adjunct of the Israeli foreign minister's office, which I think would be breathtaking if he said that, had such a view.

I got a letter back from Senator Hagel, in response to my question, did you say that and do you believe that? And, the letter says he did not recall saying that. He disavowed that statement.

For the record, last year, over President Obama's first four years, the deficit shrunk by about $300 billion. This year, the deficit is projected to be about $600 billion smaller than when the president took office. We are, in reality, currently seeing the fastest deficit reduction in several generations.
More people need to know this.

Morning, comrades. I'm afraid just reading this blog gave me a headache behind my eye.

But in better news, I was at the oncologist this morning. I am pleased to report that my BP is down and my weight is up, both good things.

I have a wee bit of improvement in my hands with the neuropathy, although my feet are regrettably lagging far behind in the recovery process.

I'm in the clear until June now, but I will need to see her every 6 months for the next 5 years, and then have an annual CAT scan as well.

On to Gastroenterology next! (March.)

At the same time, the size and trajectory of the U.S. deficit is poorly understood by most Americans, with 62 percent saying it’s getting bigger, 28 percent saying it’s staying about the same this year, and just 6 percent saying it’s shrinking. The Congressional Budget Office reported Feb. 6 that the federal budget deficit is getting smaller, falling to $845 billion this year -- the first time in five years that the gap between taxes and spending will be less than $1 trillion.

McCain is shameful -- as was the local reporting on the story.
At Wednesday’s town hall, Teves told McCain that her son, Alex, was killed in the massacre, and she urged the senator to support a ban on assault weapons. McCain responded: “I can tell you right now you need some straight talk. That assault weapons ban will not pass the Congress of the United States.”

The crowd, many of whom appeared to be pro-gun, burst into cheers and applause at McCain’s comments. But Teves said she wasn’t fazed by that, and those cheers, as captured by a local TV news crew, were only part of the story.

“I wasn’t surprised,” Teves said. “It’s a large, divided issue. I did start my sentence with — and I believe this — ‘I am a supporter of the Second Amendment.’ What they did not show you in that clip was after I did say that the military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines don’t belong on our streets, there was also some huge support and applause that unfortunately was cut out of that clip.”

Ugh

There's a dozen light fixtures in my "Inbox", there are another dozen on their way. The first 3 took all this morning. I'll be doing these until at least Wednesday. Hope the project manager understands, I think she will. Cuz there's 2 other projects fighting for "test mine first". First time I've had such a backlog.

Been making mistake after mistake after mistake this morning. First thing that I noticed was that when I pulled out my med dispenser after breakfast that there was still last night's sitting in there. Maybe why my blood sugar is way up....

Luckily the one time I hit a deer, I was only doing 20 because the road was snow covered, we both sorta slid off in different directions.

And a half hour from now, I start a Chinese course they're giving at work, since we have a Chinese office and we interact with them often. I was on a waiting list so I missed the first week, hopefully not too bad.
