Good Morning.

Today is our 4,342nd day in Afghanistan.

We'll start this morning as we always do; with the latest casualty figures from our ongoing war, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 2,258
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 1,100

We find this morning's cost of war passing through:

$ 1, 467, 645, 100, 000 .00

So, we seem to be on the road to war again. We've stood idly by before while a despot gassed his own people, but in the 80s it was our 'friend' Saddam Hussein, and I believe there was probably a global commodity involved. However, Syria has no such commodity available on the world market, so it becomes an 'easy' target.

Are we justified in being the world's policeman yet again? Predictably, Russia is comparing this to the
runup to Iraq. They may be right, as despite the UN being on the ground in Syria, there are very few other nations calling for military intervention at this time.

The bigger question, of course, is can a war-weary public possibly support another war? I know there are compelling reasons for intervention (including this alarming story), but is that reason enough?

One day in the fall of 2012, Syrian government troops brought a young Free Syrian Army soldier's fiancée, sisters, mother, and female neighbors to the Syrian prison in which he was being held. One by one, he said, they were raped in front of him.

The 18-year-old had been an FSA soldier for less than a month when he was picked up. Crying uncontrollably as he recounted his torture while in detention to a psychiatrist named Yassar Kanawati, he said he suffers from a spinal injury inflicted by his captors. The other men detained with him were all raped, he told the doctor. When Kanawati asked if he, too, was raped, he went silent.

Although most coverage of the Syrian civil war tends to focus on the fighting between the two sides, this war, like most, has a more insidious dimension: rape has been reportedly used widely as a tool of control, intimidation, and humiliation throughout the conflict. And its effects, while not always fatal, are creating a nation of traumatized survivors -- everyone from the direct victims of the attacks to their children, who may have witnessed or been otherwise affected by what has been perpetrated on their relatives.

In September 2012, I was at the United Nations when Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide shook up a fluorescent-lit room of bored-looking bureaucrats by saying that what happened during the Bosnian war is "repeating itself right now in Syria." He was referring to the rape of tens of thousands of women in that country in the 1990s.

"With every war and major conflict, as an international community we say 'never again' to mass rape," said Nobel Laureate Jody Williams, who is co-chair of the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict. [Full disclosure: I'm on the advisory committee of the campaign.] "Yet, in Syria, as countless women are again finding the war waged on their bodies--we are again standing by and wringing our hands."

But it may already be too late. Some are already calling Secretary Kerry's remarks yesterday a war speech, but I suppose only time will tell.

It’s difficult to find a single sentence in Secretary of State John Kerry’s forceful and at points emotional press conference on Syria that did not sound like a direct case for imminent U.S. military action against Syria. It was, from the first paragraph to the 15th, a war speech.

That doesn’t mean that full-on war is coming; the Obama administration appears poised for a limited campaign of offshore strikes, probably cruise missiles and possible aircraft strikes. President Obama has long signaled that he has no interest in a full, open-ended or ground-based intervention, and there’s no reason to believe his calculus has changed. But Kerry’s language and tone were unmistakable. He was making the case for, and signaling that the United States planned to pursue, military action against another country. As my colleagues Karen DeYoung and Anne Gearan wrote, “Kerry left little doubt that the decision for the United States is not whether to take military action, but when.”

Kerry made the moral case for attacking Syria. He described what’s happening in Syria as “the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, the killing of women and children and innocent bystanders by chemical weapons,” which he called “a moral obscenity” and “inexcusable.”

Kerry made the international norms case for striking Syria. “All peoples and all nations who believe in the cause of our common humanity must stand up to assure that there is accountability for the use of chemical weapons so that it never happens again,” he said. The argument here is that punishing Assad’s use of chemical weapons matters “beyond the conflict in Syria itself,” because the world wants to deter future military actors from using chemical weapons.

Kerry hinted at international coalition-building, saying that he’d spoken “with foreign ministers from around the world.” He later said that “information [about the attack] is being compiled and reviewed together with our partners.”

And so we now sit and wait...if and when we do go to war, at least we know it will be swift and decisive, at least in the opening phase. That is something the United States still does well...the question of course, is "How long will it last this time?"

Good morning.

I'm really worried about Syria. Really worried. It's more apt to compare it to what happened in Bosnia rather than Iraq. That said -- maybe we should stop comparing everything. I said to Bob the other day that thanks to the illegal war we called Iraq -- the idea of has been tainted forever for any possible *conflict* --

What do we do? Do we do nothing and watch genocide happen as we have in Darfur, and Rwanda? Or do we risk everything only to se the same results as we did in Somalia?

I'm not a pacifist -- I don't beat the drums for war either. This situation isn't black and white but thanks to the previous administrations recklessness people can only see it that way.

People are claiming that this is a false flag operation -- I've seen *curveball* thrown around as though this administration is going into this the same way as Bush did with Iraq. I cannot believe for the life of me that President Obama, who is trying to draw down troops in two other conflicts would willy nilly commit our already exhausted military to Syria unless there was a damn good reason to.

Rape and Chemical weapons are reasons to end what is happening in Syria. These are very serious violations of the Geneva convention. They are war crimes.

I hope we can see a Dayton type solution sooner rather than later.

Morning!

I'm staying home today and listening to the show.

Also, since I thoroughly cleaned my shed on Sunday, I shall commence to my Attic/extra space and attempt to do the same. Could be messy....

And now, a thoughtful deconstruction of Miley Cyrus at the VMA from the NYT.

Yes we need to lighten up for a moment.

Why does everyone talk about this really bad dancing and not the horrible song itself which is about rape, or a least the "blurred lines" of consent? Not to mention that the music is right off STOLEN from Marvin Gaye. Miley Cyrus can't dance because she doesn't understand dance except what she learned from Disney. The dancers behind her are the ones that should be front and center.

August 18, 2011: President Obama DID call for Assad to step down. So to assume this isn't about regime change, one might not be correct.

We would not be considering this 2 years later is rape and chemical weapons had not been used as a tool of war. Everyone keeps mentioning CW -- but the story that Tri brought up in today just absolutely horrifies me.

That is just cruel.

Cutting the cable and going OTA / Netflix means I don't even have to waste firing one synapse to decide whether to subject myself to trash like this or worry that my TiVo might accidentally record it as a "suggestion".

Looking at that picture reinforced the wisdom of my decision.

Hmmm. On a staycation this week. Honda's in the shop today to check a front end problem that's chewing up one of the tires.

Of course, I can't recreate the noise that it makes for the mechanic, though it made all sorts of noise going into his parking lot because it's gravel. Maybe he'll hear it then.

On my last birthday I was getting Happy Birthday messages from forums I hadn't been to in a long time. I forgot I was even members of some of them.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VELVEETA

Good day, folks. Got home late from work last night so I just crashed out on the bed when I got home with kitty keeping me company for awhile although I think she went outside again.

Pap is filling in for Thom Hartmann. It seems like he never really takes vacation though.

As for Syria, there have also been reports that the rebels have used chemical weapons and the strongest part of the rebels have ties to Al-Qaeda which makes intervention in Syria the possibility of replacing one devil with another.

The Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant will shut down by the end of next year, according to an announcement on Tuesday by Entergy Corp., the Louisiana company that has battled the state to keep operating the problem-plagued, aging reactor. “I am delighted that Entergy will shut down the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant which has had so many problems in recent years. There is a strong desire on the part of the people of the state of Vermont to close the plant that was scheduled to operate for only 40 years,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said.

They do, we all had it but one person in the company decided to keep hitting the "YES" button when he got a pop-up saying he had malware (its the same virus that's been going around for years now). So it got into the shared files and into all our computers and some how VIPRE got disabled and the computer mgr had to take off VIPRE and reinstall it on all the computers.

Well it wouldn't reload on 3 computers (1 being mine) on Friday. So instead of staying a fixing it, she decided that we could fix it ourselves on Monday since she was going on vacation. Turns out Monday the guy was not in the office and I had to wait till today. Then after 3.5 hours he tells me VIPRE wouldn't load fully and he needs to investigate why but he can't do it right now cause he has a meeting elsewhere.

Now I'm gonna have to wait till Tuesday to get this resolved by possibly having my system rebuilt. I'm not even sure what that means but I'm not happy about it.
