They blacked out the media. Poor Iran
Author: Raine    Date: 06/22/2009 12:40:15

Like many others, I have been watching the events in Iran unfold over these past few weeks. It is frightening, terrifying, fascinating and exhilarating. It's dangerous, though. People are dying. More people you can safely assume, than is being reported. This green revolution is growing and morphing into something else, but it started with a simple idea: Count Our Vote. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

For most of the week, the people involved in this green movement have used social networking to get messages out of the country, as the country has clamped down on all media. Journalists are being held without charges, some are simply missing, visas are being revoked. The BBC has been told to leave. CNN AND other major outlets have been reporting all week that since they cannot report from inside of Iran, they too must rely on sites such as YouTube, facebook, twitter and proxy servers for information and claim that this is the best they can do. It leaves me to wondering, where were they in 2008 when Amy Goodman was arrested outside the RNC convention -- in Minneapolis/St. Paul? Surely there was no state imposed media blackout? Right?

Where were they when police used tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray on Americans at that same convention? Even Donna Brazille was hit by pepper spray as she walked into the convention center. Where were they in 2004 when countless people were hauled off the streets of NYC during the RNC convention there? Pier 57, you will recall, was a holding pen for nearly 400 people. They were rounded up and tossed in a warehouse - no food, water, phones -nothing. Police were seen beating protesters. Where were they in 2003 and 2005 (ongoing today, btw) , when ANSWER Coalition and United for Peace and Justice organized millions of people to protest against the occupation in Iraq? Where were they? Where were they in 2004, when Ohio didn't have their votes counted? (to this day those votes have not been counted) Where were they in 2000, when Florida had their votes stolen?

Where ARE they in America? Surely they cannot claim a media blackout, can they? WE don't have a state run network. While I appreciate the media trying to cover this very important story in Iran, I do not appreciate the excuse of a media blackout from a secretive country like Iran for less than stellar reporting. I would love to see just half the time and passion for Iran to be used for stories here in America-- stories like the healthcare debate. While the media wrings it's hands over Iran, people are actually dying for lack of healthcare in America. People are dying, and the media doesn't report it.

We are here though, those that peacefully protest, and those that want our votes counted. We are the people who call our representatives and ask them to please listen -- The media isn't telling you that. We are here and we could use some help. Make the calls, write the letters --tell them what you want from them. That is how you make your vote work for you. And while you are at it -- call the media, contact them, tell them what stories are important. When you see misinformation say something. Write letters to the editor. Twitter -- Facebook, snail mail, telephone, email... This is our country and it is our responsibility to take care of it. Don't let them cry over a media blackout halfway across the world when they have blacked out out the news themselves right here in the United States.

:usa: Vigilance!

:peace: and

Morning all.

Yes, we can and do have a media blackout. Its called Corporate owned media. They report the "opinion news" and then the "real news" is stuff that lulls us into apathy and couch potato-dom (dumb?). Lindsay nude photos! Jon & Kate..... whatever!! American Idol contestant gay? Brad and Angelina spend the night apart!! "Deal or No Deal", "Dancing with the Stars", Design Style Cooking Challenge of the Pet Groomers who are Bachelors and looking for Love Celebrity Style.... whatever......

America is defined by its politicians and its sports teams. Nothing else matters.

Morning, comrades!

Good Morning!

I just find it amazing -- the media hypocrisy regarding this issue. Perhaps too many Americans are too complacent, But the lack of information the news media provides helps to increase ignorance -- and that is a dangerous combination.

What is happening in Iran is a very important story, no question about it, but we have had some very important stories here in America that have gone un-noticed and unreported. One would think with a 24/7 news cycle the opposite would be the case. *sigh*

BTW: I am super super super pissed off. More than my usual. Seems Adobe has a new Flash Player. Yay for them! But they have decided that people who keep their old G5's in good condition and out of the landfills are not worthy of their new upgrade. My Mac uses Panther OS 10.3.9 (It was built in 2002 and I purchased it used in 2003 from Apple).

EEEEEEYYYYYYYAYAAAAAAAAYYAAAAAA!!!

"Scary Rant Man" soured me on the concept of a replacement host way back in the early days. I also don't particularly care for "Frangela", so I don't usually listen to the end of the show on Fridays. (Frangela is my issue, though. I just don't find them particularly humorous; more irritating.)

Eh. Different Strokes, dontcha know?

I would agree, Frangela is kind of fun for me...but i really can't listen to whole hours of them.

but still better than Elaine...however you spell her last name.

just...dull...*sighs*

But I do love me Hal Sparks, I've saved all his appearance from ym podcast...so I'll definatly be listening, thought not sure how he'd do as the only one in there.

Morning all.. :coffee2:

Interesting weekend - was cleaning/sharpening some hedge clippers, put 'em on my desk to do something else for a moment, knocked em off and almost impaled my foot! :O

...then I went to go pick em up and the wheel of my chair spun the point into my foot anyways! Not a horribly bad gash, but still a lil deep and plenty bloody. Hey, at least the blades were clean & rust free!

how does skateboarding become "maybe we could let them shoot a porno film in the Lincoln bedroom"?

Random's a young male...and he doesn't see what drugs strippers and Porn have to do with Skateboarding.

Though...he would like to know.

Not sure. I think this is a case about a town that was created AFTER the VRA-- they wanted to be excluded from section 5.

Either way -- it is not cool.

They have ruled on this case:

Forest Grove School District v. T.A. where the Court will finally rule on whether the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act allows parents to seek private school tuition reimbursement for a child who never received special education services from his school district.

Ruling: From CBS: Supreme Court issues ruling supporting parents of children with special needs who seek public school reimbursement for private schools.

Section 5 Survives

Justice Clarence Thomas, who dissented alone, said that 45 years after Congress initially passed Section 5 in 1965, “the violence, intimidation and subterfuge” that led to its enactment “no longer remains.” He said giving local governments a chance to bail out was insufficient, so he would nullify Section 5.

:thud: Thomas finally acts alone-- of ALL effing cases.

Hey kiddies, I've learned the real culprit behind the Healthcare logjam is the AMA.

They own the CPT procedure codeset, which doctors use to tell the insurance companies what they did on the patients.

The AMA also owns the RBRVS fee schedule, which tells doctors how much they can expect to be paid for these services. Look it up in Google sometime. (Regional based relative value scale). Doctor's services cost more or less depending on where they are done....

And the same group controls the procedures and the payment rates. Antitrust much?

He did know about the Contra drug trafficking and turned a blind eye to it so he is complicit in illegal activity. Of course the Bush pardons do keep all this stuff buried in the pass. But Bush didn't pardon Ollie, a judge sympathetic to the right-wing criminals overturned his conviction on a technicality.
