Good Morning!

Returning to form this week with the big conventions done...

Diving right in, I am reminded once again of the biggest challenge facing any third party; ballot access. Something curious is happening in the state of Texas, though.

Did you think it was odd that both the major conventions were so late this year? Well, Bob Barr has also found something interesting. The deadline to file paperwork to appear on the Texas ballot was August 25....before both major candidates were even nominated.

The Libertarian Party had their ducks in a row; now the LP candidate is calling for Texas law to be enforced!
The Bob Barr presidential campaign has stated "serious legal consequences" will occur should Senators Barack Obama and John McCain be allowed on the Texas general election ballot after they knowingly missed the state's deadline to file.

According to documents obtained by the Barr campaign, neither John McCain nor Barack Obama complied with Texas Election Code § 192.031, which requires that filings must be submitted “before 5 p.m. of the 70th day before presidential Election Day," listing the "names of the party's nominees for president and vice-president."

"The Election Code of the State of Texas imposes requirements on a political party, which must be met if its candidates for president and vice-presidents are to appear on the general election ballot," Russell Verney, Bob Barr's campaign manager stated in a letter sent to the Texas Secretary of State's office. "The Democratic Party and Mr. Obama, and the Republican Party and Mr. McCain, blatantly ignored the Texas statutory deadline."

The deadline, which was set at 5 p.m. on August 26, passed before Sen. Obama was nominated and before Sen. McCain had even selected his running mate.

"The law is clear, and it was clearly not followed," says Verney. "The Texas Supreme Court was emphatic when it stated that the law 'does not allow political parties or candidates to ignore statutory deadlines . . .' Senators Obama and McCain did not file by the deadline; therefore, Texas should abide by the laws it created. No political party or candidate is above the law."

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003.

Bob Barr is certainly right; it may be interesting to keep an eye on this for the next few weeks.

Sarah Palin is a Bee-otch
Author: m-hadley    Date: 09/05/2008 12:21:09

And She's Mean, Too

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa213/FourFreedoms/Evil_Palin_2.jpg

Who would have guessed that Sarah Palin is such a beee-otch? She sure proved it last night with a speech full of lies, hyperbole, attacks and sheer hate-filled talk. Where to start? In case you missed it - here it is in all of it's hate-fueled glory. It was set-up by a string of other lie-filled speeches by Mittens Romney, Mike Huckleberry, and Rudi "Noun-verb-9/11" Ghouliani. By the time Palin took the stage the audience had worked themselves into a frenzy of attack mode, ready to hear all of the lies and hate without any expectation of substance or a real discussion of issues that face Americans today.

Completely Frivilous Friday
Author: wickedpam    Date: 09/05/2008 12:19:43

Morning All!

I know I could have focused on last night's speech but to be honest my brain and heart weren't in it. It's hard to gin up even the remotest interest in something that I already have a notion will go sometime like this: blah, blah, blah, POW, POW, POW, bah, blah, blah, 911, 911, 911, blah, blah, blah. So I thought I would end this week with some frivolous fun instead. This is something of a throw back to the old days of Unfiltered.

For those who for whatever reason didn’t get to listen to the original show that brought a lot of us together, Fridays were reserved for not just the usual news but also had a feature of bringing music and mixology to the table. I think that is also the place where we saw the origination of the Raintini.

This week the news has been dominated by hurricanes and the Republican convention, so basically it’s all hot air and blowing stuff around. And that is the overall theme for music and adult beverages, so feel free to add.

Country First? Why is that familiar?
Author: TriSec    Date: 09/04/2008 10:45:16

Good Morning!

Have you been keeping up with our friends in Minneapolis? There's been a lot of interesting things happening up there in the Twin Cities.

I believe I have seen a whopping two persons of color on the convention floor....Mondo has observed the automated nature of the applause from the delegates, but "their eyes are empty" as if responding by rote, without any passion or conviction.

I'm impressed by the number of hand-painted signs; I don't know if this is the norm for the convention, but I don't recall seeing that at the DNC in Denver...it really makes this convention look like a bunch of low-budget amateurs.

And nevermind that "deer in the headlights" speech from Governor Palin last night....I don't recall ever hearing such a disjointed and unprofessional speech from a major candidate. And they speak of Obama's lack of experience...

But the thing that I have noticed the most is all of those "Country First" signs. I'm finding it vaguely unsettling. Much has been made about Obama giving a speech in a stadium to cap the convention, and of course comparisons were made to certain rallies that took place in Europe in the 1930s. But isn't sacrificing everything on the altar of the state one of the hallmarks of fascism? I know we're all familiar with it, but a brief review of the 14 characteristics of Fascism is in order. How much of this have we seen so far this week?

Mavericks, My Ass!
Author: Shane-O    Date: 09/03/2008 07:50:38

mav·er·ickn.
1: an unbranded range animal; especially : a motherless calf
2: an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party

The word dates back to 1867 from the American pioneer Samuel A. Maverick (1803-1870) who did not brand his cattle.

Well, maybe the branding part of the McCain/Palin ticket does deserve the term maverick.

How many political ads for down ticket races in your area have you seen? And how many of the Republicans running actually admit to being Republicans?

Can’t say I blame them…

Sarah: Plain and simple.
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 08/31/2008 12:25:52

Finally! A candidate that Velveeta Jones can wrap her hands around! Sarah Palin! A true fighter. A woman, a wife and a mother! A mother, who apparently, never gives up. Its obvious that her natural reserves have been drilled often - she has a barn load of kids. And not with silly popular names like "Lindsay" or "Michael", rather, strong names that will really make these kids stand-outs on the national stage. Names like: Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig. I'm sure that "Dirk", "Butte" and "Seedling" will be appearing in the future, since she still has plenty of birthing years left. She can even have them while in the job of VP. And, since she recently told us that she's not sure what the Vice President does, why not just make more babies for the "democracy spreading" that McCain has promised us for the next 100 years?

Poor, sheltered Sarah, she's not sure what the VP does? Well, here’s some things her predecessor excelled on, maybe she can find a few tips:

Do shoot your fellow lobbyist/friends/donors in the face while “hunting” at farms where they drug and cage the animals then release them for an easy kill.

Do set up a task force and have secret meetings with corporations (i.e. Oil executives) that have a vested interest to make and set policy and agendas.

Do try to convince us that you would not be a member of the Executive Branch.

Continue trampling on the Constitution.

But I digress. What is it about this woman that arouses so many of us? Is it because she's such a great role model for our Grand Old Party? What say's "Republican Values" better than holding the second highest office in the world, while toting around a 4 month old. Sarah Palin is a feminist in every sense of the word! (Excluding Roe v Wade).

Good Morning!

Well, it's the eve of the Republican convention. From where I sit, it seems that the McCain campaign is in more disarray every day. It's purely anectdotal, but the few republicans that I know in this state are increasingly disappointed with McCain and his policies. At least one person I know is voting for Obama; there's a few others that I've been trying hard to sell Bob Barr to.

I know none of us here are seriously considering voting for Bob Barr. I never was going to vote for him from the very beginning; my candidate didn't make it out of the convention and he has virtually disappeared since then.

But since we ALL must know some republican fence-sitters....you owe it to America to point out that there are alternatives for our misguided friends.

I have found a remarkable website called "On the Issues", that lists the positions of every candidate on every issue....so I'll cherry-pick just a couple of things today and we'll look at Barr vs. McCain.

Yes. We did.
Author: Raine    Date: 08/29/2008 12:18:58

Did you wake up this morning still feeling it? The happiness the hope and the change that we are making happen? I know I did. I don't have to tell you how historic last night was. What I do want to tell you is that It was, and still is, an honor and a privilege to be able to share it with all of you.

We have a chance this time to not just move away from the failures of the past 8 years, but to be a part of great change in this country. I for one am so happy that I am here to be a part of it. 58 years ago, Rosa Parks was sent to jail for not taking her seat in the back of a bus. Over the past year, Hillary Clinton puts 19 million cracks in a ceiling. Last night, this is what we saw:
