The final Countdown - Liveblogging the POTUS debate
Author: Raine    Date: 10/15/2008 23:28:16

Here we are. The last debate. John MCCain promisies to "Whip his you know what" You may know who He is talking about better as That One.

Either way, here we are... waiting for the final debate of this election season that has seen more highs and lows that I think any of us has ever seen in any sports game. Thisis it. This is the beginning of the fourth quarter. We have less than 21 days to go, andanything can happen. Damn, I will stop here. I am just not that good at sports analogies. However, we have a game tonite, so I ask, PLEASE do NOT play if the sudden urge to drink happens every time you hear My Friends. (you know who I am talking about!! ! )

Every time "evil", "evil doers", or anything with evil is mentioned, drink.

Bre'r Obama
Author: BobR    Date: 10/15/2008 12:23:55

"I've got you this time, Brer Rabbit," said Brer Fox, jumping up and shaking off the dust. "You've sassed me for the very last time. Now I wonder what I should do with you?"

Brer Rabbit's eyes got very large. "Oh please Brer Fox, whatever you do, please don't throw me into the briar patch."

"Maybe I should roast you over a fire and eat you," mused Brer Fox. "No, that's too much trouble. Maybe I'll hang you instead."

"Roast me! Hang me! Do whatever you please," said Brer Rabbit. "Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch." - From "The Wonderful Tar Baby Story" as told by Joel Chandler Harris [paraphrased]

The old story about Bre'r Rabbit and Bre'r Fox is a study in reverse psychology. It's about being cool enough under pressure to use your brains to get your opponent to do what you want them to, all the while making them think it's their choice and something you don't want. I was reminded of this story last night when I heard McCain say that Obama had pretty much forced his hand and assured that Bill Ayers would be brought up in tonight's debate.

Good Morning.

Today is our 2,036th day in Iraq.

We'll start this morning as we always do, with the latest casualty figures from the Warron Terra, courtesy of Antiwar.com:

American Deaths
Since war began (3/19/03): 4182
Since "Mission Accomplished" (5/1/03): 4043
Since Capture of Saddam (12/13/03): 3721
Since Handover (6/29/04): 3324
Since Election (1/31/05): 2744

Other Coalition Troops - Iraq: 314
US Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 611
Other Military Deaths - Afghanistan: 376
Contractor Deaths - Iraq: 444

We find this morning's Cost of War passing through: $562, 353, 250, 000.00

We're going to cross the aisle this morning and check in with a well-known right-wing tool. It's Uncle Pat...(don't cringe yet.) Despite his views, he does treat our own Dr. Maddow with a modicum of respect, so I'm willing to hear him out. Pat has penned an interesting column today that I must admit makes a whole lot of sense.

The man who lost his way.
Author: Raine    Date: 10/13/2008 12:15:06

Bill Kristol wants Gramps to "Fire the Campaign".
What McCain needs to do is junk the whole thing and start over. Shut down the rapid responses, end the frantic e-mails, bench the spinning surrogates, stop putting up new TV and Internet ads every minute. In fact, pull all the ads — they’re doing no good anyway. Use that money for televised town halls and half-hour addresses in prime time.

And let McCain go back to what he’s been good at in the past — running as a cheerful, open and accessible candidate. Palin should follow suit. The two of them are attractive and competent politicians. They’re happy warriors and good campaigners. Set them free.

Horror story.
Author: velveeta jones    Date: 10/12/2008 12:54:17

Help me! How did this happen and what did I do to deserve this? And why oh why won't someone come to my rescue! The things that I've seen...... awful things.... horrifying atrocities....

Today I will tell my story.... while I can........for I know not what unspeakable things will be done to me next. Surely, I will be put back into my prison: a black box which closes with a loud THUD and where I remain, unable to move, my padded cell binding me to the wall, and the darkness, the frightening darkness...... Sorry, its hard not to cry, I'm sure you'll understand. No one should suffer these tortures.... no one.....

Let me pull myself together to tell you of my strange journey. I must be swift; as my prisoners could come at any minute.

I can remember as far back as being in the womb, my mother keeping me warm and at peace. Listening to generation after generation of people above me and out in the world. They are also at peace, at least most of the time. Then came the day when I was born against my will, taken away from my mother. The harsh sunlight, the screaming and pushing! Loud bangs in the morning sky – I would later learn was gunfire. As quickly as I saw these things, I was shoved back into semi-darkness. A sack of some sort.

Eventually, I could see; the land around me was bumping up and down violently as the scenery moved past me; all the while the men were screaming at each other.

Libertarian Saturday
Author: TriSec    Date: 10/11/2008 13:04:26

Good Morning!

Well, the Red Sox have won game 1 at Tropicana field. I don't know about you, but last night really showcased everything that's wrong with baseball today. A dome with strange field rules, artificial turf, designated hitters....and of course the ludicrous 8:30 start. I've said it many, many times before....during the regular season, the games start at 7:05. Why not during the playoffs? I hardly think there's any interest in these games outside the team cities, at least until the World Series. But even then, 8:30 on the East Coast is just 5:30 out west...who's going to watch a game during rush hour? (And isn't all the money and most of the ratings points on the East Coast, anyway? Come on MLB, how about a little common sense?)

Ah, but I digress. TriSec tends to bloviate about baseball incessantly...

Speaking of bloviation, have we all been keeping up with the debates? Well, so has Bob Barr, and like it happens every four years, the third-party candidates are getting tossed a few crumbs by the media in the hopes they'll go away. But don't you think everyone running for high office should get an equal chance? It certainly would make things more interesting, and maybe even knock a few scales away from some eyes. Bob's written a column, originally posted over at HuffPo about it...

The Lighter Side of...
Author: BobR    Date: 10/10/2008 12:28:57

There's been a lot of heavy news these last few days... Wall Street is imploding, McCain rallies are turning into lynch mobs, the government is listening in on phone sex... Since it's Friday, we thought perhaps it would be nice to take a look at the lighter side of the news...

First Up: In a maverick effort to show what a maverick he is, John "Maverick" McCain has gone all mavericky and mavericked his maverickness. What mavericktude! However, this has pissed off the original Maverick family. Yes, there really is a maverick family, and the adjective actually originated because of one of the family's forefathers. One of the current family members said: "I'm Fontaine Maverick, and John McCain, you sir are no Maverick":

Who is creating the terror? Not "That one"
Author: Raine    Date: 10/09/2008 12:13:59

By now, I am sure you have heard the federal government may nationalize part of our banks. Now I have said it before and I will say it again, economics are not my strong suit at all, but this appears to me to be a very bad idea.

On top of that, yesterday, the Federal Reserve gave AIG another 38 billion, and we have been told that the 700 billion dollar bailout package is going to take some time before it kicks in. I am starting to get a little concerned here. What the hell have these Republicans done to our country?

McCacca
Author: BobR    Date: 10/08/2008 12:32:50

"THAT one"...

It was a tossed off comment in the middle of a sentence. It wasn't the centerpiece of McCain's response. During the debate, McCain was trying to make a point, and - to distinguish himself from Obama - pointed in his direction (without looking at him) and referred to Obama as "THAT one". It was dismissive in a very insulting way and it highlighted McCain's disdain for Obama.

See for yourself:
